“No, I will not go! And that’s final! Leave me alone!” Cole glared angrily at Geminine Isle, known to all as Sky.
“Please? We need one more person for the mission and this may have the final opportunity I need to reach Velo Level!” Cole looked into the begging green eyes he had grown accustomed to staring into. They weren’t always staring back, but nevertheless, he enjoyed every sneak he could spare. His own brown eyes always seemed a bit shy when glancing at her, and at those times he wished his dirty brown hair was at least somewhat long so he could hide under it.
“What part of ‘no’ aren’t you getting Sky?”
Her brown curls bounced upon her back as she fidgeted nervously. “C’mon Cole, for all the times we’ve had together, please come with me? Did I mention it might get me to Velo Level?”
“Yes, yes you did, twice now. But as I recall, so would’ve the last three missions you wanted me to go on with you. The first one I came back with rashes, second I sprained my wrist and the third one I came back covered in mud!” Cole hadn’t liked that. It hadn’t just been mud, but a specialized mud with and equally specialized scent that wouldn’t wear off for a week. Everyone he had past coughed ferociously and just about everyone he had talked to had fainted. Luckily for him, the main dance of the year had been the month before…
Sky looked downhearted. “Cole, we’ve gone on every mission together. Whose going to back me up when I make silly mistakes? You do realize that if you don’t come, I’ll have no choice but to ask Shelton?” Shelton Barndon was Cole’s longtime rival who would do anything to see Col fail. Why? No one knew for sure, but he and Cole were always at each other’s throats.
“So ask him! Just leave me alone! I have studies to work on. Finals are coming you know.” He started walking down the corridor and cringed when he heard her say, “You know what Cole? You’re changing. I feel as if I don’t know you anymore…”
So what? He thought. I just got lots of studies. They attended the largest high school in the nation, Carros High, which doubled as a secret agency. There were only two ways to get in.. (Note: once in the school, you would be ranked: Telo, Austro, Greyno, and Telo, being the highest. There were humorous challenges that had to be overcome before being raised to the next level, many of them unthinkable. Cole noticed that Sky seemed to always find some obscure way to defeat the challenge and pass it, though it had always relied on his help.) The first was through your academic achievements. The other way was by being strong in your special power. Most everyone had one, and at Carros High you took classes to help it grow for use on the field. Cole was able to bring up invisible shields whenever he wished, and, if he tried, he could shoot laser beams from his eyes. Usually that only happened when he was mad. He wasn’t mad now; he was just irritated.
He could never be mad at Sky. She was his best friend, and the school’s second best illusionist. Just by thinking about it, she could project an image anywhere in the area. Recently she had been learning how to control her emotions. If she was truly mad, a transparent lightening bolt would zap the unfortunate person, and if she was mad at a teacher, she would usually wind up in detention. A side power she had was the ability to know when her food was poisoned. It constantly helped out during lunch.
Sky had been Cole’s friend since their first class in the fourth grade. They were a pair, always walking around, chatting about whatever was new. In their third year of school, they had switched rooms with a few others so they could have their dorms right next to each other. And luckily, it had stayed that way ever since. It may have been different the year a new kid had been assigned Sky’s room, but she had made his year miserable until he had agreed to trade rooms with her.
Cole glanced out the windows as he headed toward his room to study. He saw the lush forest of Llym. This forest secluded the school from the rest of the world, whisking it away in deep mountains of greenery. He loved to glance out the window on days like this; days where the sun brightly smiled upon him and where the clouds danced with glee.
He turned his head away. He couldn’t waste time today. He had to study. Quickly, he walked down a corridor, turned left and located his door. He typed the password into the keypad and sighed. She wouldn’t be mad at him for long. She never was. After the mission, she’d come bouncing all the way to his room to tell him all the details. Every single, painful little detail.
The door opened, letting him grasp the familiar smell of his room. The cinnamon rush filled his lungs and he entered in, throwing his books upon a lonely chair that Sky would sit in when she visited his room. He threw himself upon his bed and stared at the ceiling. He should’ve gone with her. Instead, he had let his favorite girl in the entire school go with Shelton Barndon. Shelton! What had he been thinking, letting her go with that wrench? Cole wanted to run out of the room and find Sky to tell her that he would go on the mission, but he held himself back. It was too late. The only thing he could do now was study. He’d talk to her when she came back. Yeah, when she came back. 2

Two days later, Sky trudged through the brush of the Terblan Wastelands. Their mission was to retrieve the ancient Calk necklace from some bandits had been successful. Stupid bandits, Sky thought bitterly, thinking they could get away with robbing the grand duke.
Her team had done well and deserved a good night’s rest. She had used illusions to scare the horses and Shelton, with is ability to freeze objects, froze all the scared men, letting the team rummage through the luggage until the jewel was found.
They had almost reached the transport , where they would receive a good meal. After that, they would be sent back to the school, where they would go on acting like nothing ever happened. But for Sky, something had happened. She had failed to complete the task required to advance. She had only one shot left, and if she couldn’t manage that, she would never reach Velo Level. Velo Level students would be allowed to stay at the school if they wished when finished with their schooling. They would continue their work underneath the school and be a part of the head council.
Sky was nervous and troubled about the task that she had to complete. Very nervous. In fact, if it didn’t mean she would throw away her entire life and everything she had worked for, she would leave. She would run off. Forget the school, everyone it it, her past, her desires, her loves, and travel the country performing at every inn. She would go to the extent of changing her entire appearance before doing this task. That’s how bad it was. 3

The clock struck noon, signaling the council meetings start. Zara, leader of the council, glared solemnly at those around her. She was the youngest ever to head the secret council, but she made sure that everything was kept in line. Including having all the other members present at the meetings. Most the others in the group were around her age of 20, seeing as they were a few years fresh out of the school. There were also three elders that headed the school, Principal Waystock, Vice-Principal Ribblue, and the janitor, Jainya. They often sat in on meetings to have some imput over what went on. The rest of the members ages varied. All were Velos who had chosen to stay, and there was a handful. When the school had first started, many had made it to Velo, but the numbers had been steadily dropping for the past fifty years.
After watching the last member scurry in, Zara called the meeting to order. Her narrow black eyes pierced the audience, grave matters foretold of in her eyes.
“Many of you are familiar with Geminine Isles, I presume?”
There were a few nods, some complaints of transparent thunderstorms.
“She’s a very bright student,” Greg Martz murmured thoughtfully, “Yet quite talkative.” Zara nodded, and it was once more quiet.
“This girl comes first in our matters today because she has almost reached Velo Level. She has but one task to complete…” Smiles and approving nods were seen all around. “…and has failed so many times that she only has the one choice left.”
Gasps filled the room. Shocked looks were painted all over the astonished groups. After a moment, a newcomer named Linda spoke. “Do not be afraid my friends. The child is surely not foolish enough to do this. She will finish her schooling and move on in life. We will regret to see such an accomplished mind go, but there will always be others.” Discomforted nods agreed.
Rany, a tall man who worked with ice, asked, “And what if she does accept the challage? What will we do then?” Zaras stomach turned. The child would have to be ignorant and stupid to do such a thing! Besides, Zara would be grateful when the girl left. No more worrying about the little brat’s skills surpassing her own.
“If the child does accept,” she bit her lip, “then she will have three months leave. Any longer and she will be cast out as a traitor.”
Unconvinced, those around her nodded, not quite sure about what they thought about this. Zara cleared her throat. “In other area’s of news…”5

Sky entered her room and glanced around. The room was white, furniture and everything. White. Purposely designed this way so that she could change it at anytime. Sky thought about what her mood was. In her classes that day, she hadn’t been able to concentrate fully. Her teacher had had to call on her four times before giving up and assigning a detention. A detention with Zara, Sky’s most despised person in the world. Today, she had received a note from Zara informing her of a time limit on her next assignment. The letter had been written as if Zara thought she wouldn’t bother trying. Sky gritted her teeth at the thought of it and glanced at her room. In a moments notice, everything changed from white to a dark, dreary room that fit her mood.
The walls were a dark gray, with gargoyles aligning the edges. Her furniture did not at all look inviting, and neither did the eerie picture on the wall. She sighed and threw her books on the black bed with soft pillows.
Looking about, Sky grabbed random things from her various places of storage. A comb from the faucet, some clothes from the fake pet cage. Her gadgets Cole had made for her on her last birthday. Cole. She could hear him humming in the next room. Sky realized she hadn’t talked to him since before the mission four days ago. She wanted desperately to talk to him, one on one, but she kept packing. She was afraid her mission might slip out and he would want to go. No matter what, Sky could not have Cole with her on this one. Personally, she didn’t want anyone there, but needed to be a witness. One or two, at the least. She had asked six others to come though, despite the inner feeling telling her not to. Taking a final look around her room, Sky realized that she had everything she needed for the next three months. She walked to her door, letting the illusion fade away as she fingered a pure silver locket Cole had presented to her a few years back. Engraved on it were two letters: C and S. They were intertwined together, giving an air of elegance to the heart shaped gift that never failed to warm her inside. Sky walked outside to door, and found Cole doing the same next to her. When he saw her, she started to speak.
Sky knew it would be harder to leave if she was with him. With tears in her eyes, she silenced him with an unknown farewell kiss and ran off to her mission. She didn’t even stop when he called her name. 7

Five nerve-wrecking hours later, Sky found herself in the forest next to the lair of Lord Foquet. Foquet was the most powerful wizard in the land, and the most evil too. He would burn villages and torture people who wouldn’t listen to his simple demands. In addition, he was also the worst enemy of the agents in Carros High. And it was their job today to raid his fortress to find an item and get out as soon as possible.
Sky was trying to be calm, yet her irritation seemed not to care. Next to her, young girl by the name of Sarrai, tripped for no apparent reason. Looking at what she’d fallen over, Sarrai turned to Sky. “Tripwire.” Gongs started ringing throughout the base.
Gritting her teeth, Sky turned to her team. “Quick! Behind a tree!”
They huddled together and expertly listened to Sky’s orders.
“Sam, Scott, and Eric, you three need to cause the biggest distraction that’s ever been seen before. Keep it going until you hear Sarrai’s call.” Sarrai had the ability to speak telepathically and could crack any lock. “John and Sarrai, you two need to sneak in first and find that book. S’mary? You and I will follow behind. Oh, and Sarrai?” Sky grabbed the girls’ hand. “Do try to watch out for any-”
And Sky disappeared, taking Sarrai along with her. The boys and S’mary jumped up in a flash.
“Where have they gone? Eric asked, searching the ground for clues. His magical vision could only tell him that whatever took them wasn’t far, but powerful.
S’mary was shaking, “Do, do we call for back-up?”
John took charge. “No, we do just as Sky said. S’mary, you come with me.” Turning to the other three boys, he added, “This had better be the best distraction in all of history!” With that, the group broke apart, planning to meet up in an hour. 9

Sky was talking in a forest, and the next thing she knew, she and Sarrai had appeared next to each other in a dark room. Instantly, sensing the younger girl’s fear, she changed the look of their appearance then lit the room with her illusion skills. Bad mistake. Fear filled within Sky as she looked around and saw the great wizard Lord Foquet in front of her. He was tall, towering above the two girls with eyes peering over his pointy nose. He had dark hair complemented by angry dark eyes. He wore dark traveling pants with a night black cloak over a dark shirt.
“I dislike when I find spies running loosely through my lands.” His eyes darted from girl to girl, a malicious smile lining his face. “Why are you here? Who sent you?
“The guilty need Justice to come and Justice needs followers to enforce.” Sarrai replied harshly, glaring at him.
Foguet narrowed his eyes, “Those children from Carros High sent you then?” He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, then continued, “Thinking about it, I realize that I’ve never personally killed any Carros agents before. You two will have the honor of being the first!”
Sky couldn’t do that to Sarrai, let the girl be killed! But her mission…no, a life was worth more then any stupid mission. No one would get near this girl if she had anything to say about it!
Stepping forward, Sky defiantly said, “Let her go and take me. She is but a girl.”
“What are you doing? No!”
Foquet cut in, “Very well, you I shall let go youngling. Tell your ‘owners’ that I don’t want their pets running around my premises. Consider yourself lucky this time, next time, I won’t let you go safely.” As Sarrai vanished from view, she still had Sky’s screams forever piercing her mind. 11

Cole saw at breakfast two days later Sarrai, John, S’mary, Eric, Sam and Scott sitting at a table together picking at their food. He took his tray and headed to them. After searching through hidden documents, he had found that they had been on Sky’s last mission. About time they’re back, he thought to himself. Seeing him coming, Scott motioned for them all to scatter. At once, all six of them left, tossing their trays in the trash. Curious and realizing something was wrong with this picture, Cole followed them out the door where they all split into six directions. Making up his mind, he quickly followed Sarrai.
“Sarrai! Hey! Wait up!” She turned over her shoulder worridly, then quickened her pace as if she had seen nothing. Annoyed, Cole created a barrier in the hallway which stopped her from going anywhere.
She turned and faced him, about to burst into tears. “Why are you following me?” Cole was stunned. He hadn’t meant to put her on the verge of tears.
“Have you seen Sky? I’d like to talk to her…”
Sarrai tried her best to hold back tears as she avoided Cole’s examining stare.
“Sarrai? Sarrai, what’s wrong?” His entire body jerked as he heard a single thought in his head: Sky is dead…
Cole’s entire world fell apart. His knees became shaky as Sarrai continued, she died in Foquet. Saving me sacrificing herself so I could live…I’m sorry.
Sarrai walked past him and ran all the way to her room where once more she cried her pillow wet.
Cole was frozen. Sky, dead? It…it couldn’t be. But Sarrai had been there, heard. His best friend in the world, gone. The girl he loved had been taken away, never to come back. Never coming back. Because of Foquet. Cole was angry, and swore to take revenge against this man. He would pay dearly for the damage he had done!
Later that day he was warned by his teachers to keep the matter quiet. Cole was too heart-broken to remember why. He only could think of how he would watch the great wizard Foquet fall to his knees. Revenge could only avenge her now…13

Zara looked out her window and glanced at the clouded skies. “The clock has begun. Three months from now, I will be the only one who can fulfill the prophecies!” Zara continued to laugh until she had no voice.15

“I dedicate myself fully to you, my lord.”
A shadowed figure knelt before the master, bearing the pain of consequence.
“To serve you as you see fit, to obey your every whisper.”
Lord Foquet nodded and said with great pleasure, “Rise, my new apprentice, and your training shall begin.”
The kneeling figure rose and followed the lord, intently listening to his every word. “With you young one, we shall become more powerful. No nation will withstand us, and all who oppose will fall to their doom mercilessly.”
“Yes, my lord, it shall be as you say.”
