Once upon a time in a land far away, there lived three princesses. The first one, named Rose, was as beautiful as a flower in bloom. The second, Sophie, was wiser than any wizard known to man. The third princess, Christine, was neither pretty nor smart. She was only an average girl hiding in the shadows of her sisters' fame. As princes fought to court Rose and Sophie, no one acknowledged Christines presence.
"Oh how I wish I were better," Christine cried with tears streaming down her face. A salty teardrop splashes on the floor, and it is instantly replaced with a strange old woman. She is short and plump with silver hair wrapped into a bun with a sparkling tiara on top, and she is dressed in a black evening gown. Spectacles rest perfectly on her nose, and a wand is grasped firmly in her hands. "Hello my dear." the strange woman greets her in a sweet high-pitched voice. "Wh-who are you?" the princess stutters in fear. "Why I am you fairy godmother of course!I am here to grant you three wishes." Hearing that wonderful news the princess quickly replies, "I wish I was beautiful". "It is done," said the fairy godmother, and with a flick of the wrist Christine's beauty grew. As she would wander the streets of her country, all would stare in awe at how stunning she looked, but still nothing compared to her sister, Rose, and Christine was left without any suitors. Greatly disappointed, Christine searched for her fairy godmother.1
"Oh Fairy Godmother, where are you?
I have a wish that must come true."2
Instantly the strange woman appeared. "Hello my dear. What do you ask of me?" she questions the princess in her usual gentle voice. "I wish to possess more wizdom than the smartest wizard," requested Christine eagerly. "It is done," said the fairy godmother, and with a flick of the wrist Christine's knowledge grew. All townspeople were amazed at how wise she had become, and people lined up out the door to seek her advice, but still nothing compared to Sophie's wisdom, and she was left without any suitors.
"How am I ever to be happy when there lives two who are wiser and more beautiful than I!" In distress Christine calls her fairy godmother:
"Oh Fairy Godmother, where are you?
I have a wish that must come true"3
Instantly the strange woman appears. "Hello my dear. What do you ask of me? Choose wisely for this is you final wi-". Without even allowing her to finish, Christine demands, "I wish to be the wisest and most beautiful woman in the world." "It is done," says the fairy godmother and with a flick of her wrist the wish is granted, but to Christine's surprise she neither gains beauty or wisdom. "Foolish woman," yells Christine. "How dare you deny I, a princess, her final request!" Anger and greed consume her and she strangles the fairy godmother. "Now what am I to do?" cries the princess realizing what just happened, but her self-pity is cut short as she hears a scream from within the castle. She rushes to see what has occurred and finds bother her sisters fallen to the ground dead.
All mourn the death of the princesses for seven years except for the wisest and most beautiful woman in the world, Christine. She refuses to accept her sistes' death or take any blame. "I did not wish for this!" she exclaims. "THEY CANNOT BE DEAD!"4
"Oh Fairy Godmother, where are you?
I have a wish that must come true!!!"5
But no one appears. She calls three more times, but still no one comes. Her fairy godmother remains dead, and her three wishes used up. Her is laid out before her. "Oh what have I don? All I love lies dead because of me!" Christine, stricken with guilt locks herself in the tallest tower of the castle, and from then on she remains there beautiful, wise, and forever alone.6
