A Christmas Prayer

We make a wish at Christmas
Peace on earth to all mankind,
Yet even though we say it
Do we ever take the time
And try in some small way
To give others peace of mind 1

A star atop the Christmas tree
Shining as a sign
That all is well this holiday
In this home and family

Yet far away from fireside
Where streets are bleak and cold
There are no toys to play with
No yuletime tales are told
No carols sung by candlelight
No stocking filled with joy
So here's my prayer I send
To every girl and boy 2

To the child who spends the season
On the street or in a box
I want to let him know
That I had not forgot 3

The one with Aids in Africa
Whose Christmas passed him by
I will always ask for answers
To a simple question 'Why'? 4

The children in Iraq
Who wake each day to war
If Christmas is a time of peace
What are we fighting for? 5

The refugee whose only wish
For his son and only daughter
Is to give them all a home
And provide them food and water 6

So when you all sit down to eat
At your table full of fare
See if you have time
To send a little prayer 7

The world should come together
Let us answer to the call
That no child should live in poverty
This is my Christmas prayer for all. 8

Author notes

Again just another philosophical moment when I spent my first Christmas alone.

Please tell me what you think

I liked when it said "a star atop the Christmas tree", because I like shining stars. I liked the peom because they sent a prayer to every child that was homeless. You really put a picture in my head. Thank you for a beautiful poem.
