I woke at dawn to a still house. I stood on the couch, it groaning under my weight. The early morning sun warmed my heart, and made a nervous flutter fly through me. Ever since my encounter with Eliralim, the last three days had been, well they had been interesting. I sigh, stepped off the couch and headed for the kitchen. Thinking better of it I headed for the stairs. I needed a shower. At the top of the stairs lay Eliralim huddled in a human ball. I stepped cautiously over her. The wings on her ears twitching a little, her pale pink lips forming a smile.
I closed my bedroom door and headed for the bathroom. I turned the shower on full blast, letting it warm up. Looking in the mirror I tried to imagine what Eliralim thought of me. I saw a strong jawed face, deep midnight blue eyes, unruly ebony curls tumbling over my brow. I wasn't someone who worked on my figure, but I wasn't a guy who didn't have one either. I wasn't tan, and I had a smattering of freckles across my face. I chuckled. What did it matter what Eliralim thought? She didn't appear to care about a whole lot anyways.
I left my clothes in a heap by the sink. I let the steaming water take over my body. My skin tingled, and yet I still didn't turn the stream off. My back to the door, I heard a noise. I spun around, but could see nothing through the hazy shower doors. I turned the water off and slowly slid back the door. Before me stood Eliralim, a very naked Eliralim.
"How did you get in here?" I sputtered.
"The door was open." came her whispery answer.
She stared at me wide eyed. I couldn't help but look at her. I wanted to feel that soft blue skin. I snapped out of the daze I had landed in.
"Here, you shouldn't stand around like that." I told her lightly, reaching for a towel, wrapping it around her. Then I remember I was a dripping unclothed mess.
"I...I better go put some clothes on." I muttered.
I grabbed a towel from the cupboard and dashed around the corner. Leaning against the wall I took a shaky breath, my heart hammering frantically against my chest.
"Amien, could you help me?" her whisper floated out the door.
The towel around my waist would have to do. Eliralim stood inside the shower stall, a puzzled look on her delicate face. I reached around her to turn the shower head on. Instead she reached for my hand. Her skin felt soft and cool on mine. Her gaze left me stranded in a sea of hazel. She lifted a shaky hand to my face and traced down my jaw line. I shivered under her touch. Her fingertips brushed my lips.
"Eliralim, I mustn't." I managed.
She smiled, leaned towards me and our lips met somewhere in between, her soft body against my bare chest. Then just as the kiss heightened I felt a draining sensation. I could hear the blood rushing in my ears, my heart seemed to barely beat. I pried myself from Eliralim, gasping for air but none came. Before my eyes she changed. Her eyes became blood red, her hair a shock of stringy, greasy black hair, her skin was badly burned and her nose was crooked.
A cackle arose from her throat. "Ah, men of this world are far too easily won over by a beautiful woman. Too bad for you my darling." She cooed.
One last kiss from Eliralim, she drained my of whatever was left inside. My vision blurred. She shoved me all the way into the shower, turning the water on cold. Slamming the bathroom door behind her was the thing I saw or heard. I lay crumpled next to the drain, unable to see, hear, of breath. I just lay. I tried gasping for air, but my attempt brought nothing. The water stopped suddenly; my skin tingled. I felt soft hands on my face, my shoulders. Someone was trying to put me in a sitting position but was struggling to do so. I moaned and struggled against the person, afraid it was Eliralim back to take whatever energy I had left. I writhed under their touch, shaking from the pain of trying to breath and not being able to. I was getting air, but it was less than if I were breathing through a straw. I felt the hands on my temples and all the events of earlier whizzed past my line of vision. I screamed, but it was only in my head. Then everything ended. Someones lips were on mine again. My body jerked back, not again. She had come to finish me off. My vision came back to me slowly, then my hearing. I still couldn't breath well. Eliralim sat huddled at my side. I screamed and this time it reverberated off the bathroom walls. I tried to slide away from her. My heart threatened to beat right out of my body. I started sobbing, then was ashamed of myself. Grown men didn't cry.
"Amien, calm your breathing and still your heart. It was not I who did this to you. They took on my form. I don't know who it was but I..."
None of this registered in my mind. All I knew was that this woman terrified me. I was only a mere human. And she...she was something else. If one creature could erase another existence simply by sucking the life from them, what could they do to torture beings? I tried standing, my nakedness no longer shamed me. All I knew was that I had to get away from her, she was a monster. I made it as far as the door, but collapsed in a shivering heap. Eliralim ran to me.
"I must take you with me. You will never survive the night if you don't see my father." came her whisper, worry knotting her brow.
She held onto both of my hands. By now I was so exhausted I couldn't fight back. She said some fancy words and I was overcome by a blinding light. I experienced the feeling of landing and we were in a clearing, a village not far off in the distance. A man with skin as black as coal stood towering over me. I whimpered, and the world spun about me. I vomited at his feet. Everything was becoming harder for me to focus.
"Rest now, and all will be revealed in due time." The man scooped me into his arms; my eyes already closed, impervious to the world now. 1
