Opal lifted her head to glance wearily out of the window It’s not like the weekend will be much to look forwards to anyway… She sighed and lay back on the bed, allowing her deep blue eyes to close for a moment. For a few seconds she found herself actually relaxing, but as ever she was disturbed. This time by the shrill sound of her home phone, calling to be answered. With a sigh she forced herself off the bed to grab the phone she had in her room and held it to her ear, considering what emergency could warrant her disturbance so late in the evening.
“Hey, Opal you there?”2
Opal gave a small grunt as she realised it was Gideon on the other end of the line. “No Gid, my phone picked up itself” She rolled her eyes and lay back down on the bed, knowing this conversation could last a while “What is it this time? Midlife crisis at twenty? You lost a girls number? Or maybe you can’t open a can and you want me to come over…”3
A disgruntled noise came from the other end of the line “No…actually I was wondering if…I could come round yours? If it wouldn’t be too much trouble”4
“No, no Gid, you’re never too much trouble…just, remember it’s nearly midnight and I do have some work to finish” Opal rolled onto her stomach, neatly resting the phone between her head and shoulder as she began to type once again, “How long do you think you’ll be?”5
“Not too long, maybe ten minutes?” His voice seemed slightly shaky for usual but Opal thought nothing of it, he always seemed to be in the middle of some huge crisis.
“Okay then, I’ll wait up just for you”6
“Bye…I love you Opal”7
“Mhm…you too, bye” The sound of the dial tone sounded just before she finished speaking and Opal sighed, hanging up the phone and leaving it beside her – he’d probably call again soon asking for directions.8
She yawned and glanced at the time, 11:52, not enough time to get a decent conversation in…looked like Gideon would be sleeping round. She shook her head lightly, he could deal with that when it came to it. An orange block at the bottom of her screen caught her attention, evidently someone on her messenger service was online. She clicked save on her file then opened up the window, it was from Gideon. 9
Gideon – Damn I love you girl! Says:
I just have to get this off of my chest. Recently I’ve found myself thinking of you all the time, and I think that maybe I’m falling for you! I know it’s stupid coz you’re just my best friend but I hope it wont scare you off.10
Gideon – Damn I love you girl! Says:
…are you there?11
Gideon – Damn I love you girl! Says:
Guess I’ll have to call you to get your attention then…
12Gideon – SO DAMN CONFUSED! Says:
Be round yours in ten 13
Opal blinked a few times, that explained a lot. She rolled over onto her back once again and brushed some of her dyed purple hair out of her face, glancing down and cussing slightly as she realised she was probably going to have to put something other than her night gown on if Gideon was coming round. She heard a sharp rap at the door and glanced at the time, ten minutes had gone already. She jumped up and ran down the stairs to open the door, to see Gideon’s smiling face as he looked her up and down.14
“Interesting choice of clothing there Opal”15
“What?” Opal blinked and glanced down, blushing a deep red as she realised she had forgotten to change. “Um…yeah. Hey come in, you’re soaked through!” She grabbed his shoulder and pulled him gently through the front door, closing it behind him.16
“Thanks” Gideon grinned “Wanna help get me outta these wet clothes Oap?” He winked at her, obviously joking though she didn’t seem to take it quite that way.17
“You know where the bathroom is…” Opal smiled nervously then turned, only to feel the gently touch of his hand on her shoulder. He slowly turned her round with a smile as he ran his hand down her side to rest on her waist, pulling her in as he placed a gentle kiss on her lips.18
Opal moved her hand to his chest as if to push him away, but changed her mind and leant into the kiss instead. Gideon pulled back after a while and smiled, lingering close to her lips, noses still touching as he spoke softly, “Now that makes walking through the rain all worth it”19
