Ladies Take a Bow

1

A lot has been written about them
For the deeds that they have done
The boys get all the accolades
But what about their Mums?
Now I know you need a stallion
Whose record is renowned,
But all we ask of fillies is,
Can they win one here in town?
So here’s to all the grand old dames
Who graced the racing track
The champions and also- rans
And the ones we loved to back!
We will start with B J Cummings,
A man who’s had his share
Of graceful equine ladies
Who were champions fair and square
Light Fingers was his favorite of that there was no doubt
Until Leilani came along, his secret now was out!
She won the cup at Caulfield but November was her gig
Trust a bloke to spoil the fun, second to Think Big!
Bart made plans again to claim that cup of hope
He returned once more to Flemington
With a mare called Let’s Elope
She dazzled us with turn of foot,
There surely was no better
But Cox Plate day arrived
And Cummings had Dane Ripper!
What about the kiwi mare
Who beat off all her foes
She came from last to first that day
He name was Empire Rose
We remember the year and the day
The boys thought they had it won
But no one told Ethereal or trainer Sheila Laxon!
In borrowed hat and brand new suit
Her smile lit up the day
Because the mare she had such faith in
Took the cup away.
These are but a few
Of the girls of racing’s past
Surround, Emancipation
Are also names that last
I could recount their racing talent,
But I really don’t know how
So I’ll take my hat off to them
Ladies, take a bow.2

Author notes

All the stallions in racing get recognized but what about the mares who give birth to them. I thought the girls needed this one!

    nice poem

Equality for horses? Everybody has a mother, the best and worse of us. I wonder what it would be like to meet a feminist horse? Hang on, i've met plenty now i think about it.
But seriously, good word play in the poem

Meh, I'm a critic, I didn't like it. Nothing against you but this is just something I do not like.

Surely it's a curtsy, you and the other ladies should be taking, Cannonsfire, not a bow.

I applaud you're clever use of words, and your undoubted knowlage of the horse racing world.
Ps...is there an Aussie horse called Feminist?
