Part 31
I turned my head to look round the corner of the street, casting out my aura’s senses at the same time in the opposite direction. I felt Adrian leaving his block of flats and turned to follow him. I kept my sunglasses on as I travelled through the dimly lit streets. The sun hadn’t set yet, so I knew I could get away with it. I was feeling particularly weak today and needed all the barriers I could when seeing my new Vampyre friend.
My boss’s instructions had been clear and concise, as always, as he didn’t trust that this guy knew nothing.
As my target turned into an alley I sped up and just caught sight of him climbing up to the roof. I cast out my senses out of habit, but stopped half way up the steps. Another being was up there with him. I shielded myself from sensing and tried to read the outer layer of the newcomer. I could only go so far without revealing my existence, and so chose to direct my energy to listening to the words they spoke. This new guy, a male Vampyre, was weaker than Adrian, and I figured of a different clan.
I crept to the top so my eyes could scan his outer appearance, being careful to be silent, still listening in on their conversation.
“Look, I have to go and meet someone. Can you please hurry up?”
“Who would be so important, that you would want to leave us?”
“She’s.. She’s different. Unfathomable. None of my guys could figure her out. She knows my full name from her scan.”
“She is stronger than you? You must bring her to me. We need someone like that on our team, not against us. Find her, and make sure when the battle comes, she’s on our side. Sleep with her if you like. Just make sure she trusts you.”
I ducked down a little, as I felt the guy scan the rooftops with his eyes and aura.
“And remember,” he continued. “ If she knows anything about us, we will have to have her destroyed. I know you Adrian. Do NOT get too close to her.”
And with that, I felt his presence leave the rooftop. Adrian sighed and dropped to his knees. I tilted my head to one side, as a wolf may when intrigued, and looked over the top again to where he knelt.
“Goddess, please help me through this. I did not choose this path you have set me on, But I trust in you. Please let her come to no harm, so that I may be honest with her. My feelings are deep for her already.. I do not understand how nor why, but I understand this is something I must do alone, so all I ask, is that she is safe. So Mote It Be.”2
My eyes widened in shock as I leant all of my body weight against the wall. My breathing had quickened and I struggled to slow it. I crept down the steps and walked out into the main road, keeping my aura blocked from all scans. I had no strength to leap from here to there. I needed to see Char, and fast.3
“You WHAT?!” Char exclaimed in disbelief when I relayed all that had happened.
“I said I would meet him, and I still intend to. Plus, he told the other guy he was meeting me. So I have to play it innocent.” I explained to her as she paced. “Look, I know you don’t trust me, nor him, but I'm a Vampyre. It’s not like I'm going to fall in love with him. I just think this is an opportunity we can’t afford to miss. It’s a crucial stage for everyone working undercover. This could provide us the antidote.” I finished.
She looked at me, and I sensed my truths sinking in as she accepted that once again, I was right.
“Okay, but you better check in first thing tomorrow with information. We’ll talk to the boss then.” She replied, sighing.
“Thank you for at least seeing my point, even if you don’t trust me.” I said as I walked out of her apartment. I sensed her surprise as I walked down the four flights of stairs to daylight, replacing my sunglasses and putting a thin silk scarf round my neck.4
I walked swiftly, formulating the sentences I would speak and body language I would convey as I travelled. I caught a bus and stood right by the door, ready to get off at the next stop. My mind was wandering, replaying his prayer in my head. 5
“My feelings are deep for her already..”6
For the first time in my life, I really was stumped. I couldn’t figure him out. His words reminded me of those romantic movies, but I knew he wasn’t a romantic person from when I had scanned him. 7
I got off the bus and walked down the alley where I had agreed to meet him. I cast my senses and found him leaning casually against the wall. I tilted my head, and surprised myself by noticing for the first time how good looking he was. 8
“We meet again” I said quietly, watching his gaze as it moved over my short skirt and strap top to the scarf around my neck, before resting on my eyes. I could sense that he could see them, even with my sunglasses on, and took them off, knowing they had no use now.
“Indeed we do. Care to take a walk?” He offered me his arm which I took without hesitation.
‘Just play along Raven, he’s being far too physical for a Vampyre on business, just play along’ my mind warned me. From a little distance away, I felt Char’s presence, watching me. Silently, I smiled to myself, knowing she had no idea of the plan I was about to implement.
