A Loss for Words 1

It was a bright and cloudless night, and there sitting quietly at a table in a café though it was dark and nearly one o’ clock, were two girls named Casey and Alisa. Casey and Alisa were lively and brave, and completely bored. With nothing to do, Casey was sitting around next to her sister in the middle of the night. Casey had just turned sixteen and felt there should be something more exciting lying around every corner. Obviously she read too many horror novels. Alisa her sister, having turned fourteen 6 months ago, loved her sister and enjoyed spending time with her. Alisa knew that Casey would be restless until something happened, and that soon a dull life would be enough for either of them.
They started walking down the street back to their house at 1:47 hoping to get back before 2:00 when their mom would notice their absence. Luckily they got back in 6 minutes, just in time to run back to their room without being noticed. Within two minutes of their laying down in bed, their mom got home from the night shift at work. Alisa fell asleep quickly, but it took Casey nearly an hour to fall asleep. Luckily their mom didn’t even go in to check on them. Casey assumed she crashed on the couch and didn’t even make the effort to go upstairs.
Casey woke up early the next morning. That was almost always a bad sign. Casey hadn’t woken up early since their mother had been in that car crash. Their father had left a few days after that. It was about two months ago that he returned home, and he still didn’t care about anything anymore. He would sit around in their attic all day, not thinking or caring about anything. They weren’t even sure he was awake, except that when they brought up food he absentmindedly put it in his mouth. It was awkward, having him in the house again, but they loved him and would take care of him for as long as it took for him to seem alive again.
Alisa woke up nearly two hours later and noticed that Casey wasn’t in her bed. It was really strange that Casey would be out of bed first, and Alisa was a little worried; did Casey sleep at all that night? It was completely unlike Casey to wake up early. Alisa decided to worry about that later, and headed downstairs to get some breakfast. As she walked down the stairs she could smell coffee. It looked as if Casey had made pancakes that morning for breakfast so Alisa quickly forgot about Casey’s early awakening in exchange for some pancakes drenched in a bit too much maple syrup. It was her favorite breakfast food, and she wouldn’t worry about anything except eating her pancakes until she was finished.
Casey and Alisa had school that morning. It wasn’t going to be fun, going back to school after a nice long break, but it would definitely break the boredom spell at last. The morning was a slow and tedious one to Casey, but after such a nice breakfast Alisa was all ready to get back to school. Alisa would be a freshman that year and she was a little worried about getting around the school, but Casey was a junior and she promised to show Alisa around. Casey had her own set of friends, but she was the undisputed and unspoken leader and she could get her sister in with them if she wanted. Alisa was a different story entirely. She was shy and quiet and had few friends. None of which were to be going to her high school. Alisa was fine with her sister’s friends, but she would never have been comfortable around so many people, especially people who were rowdy as Casey’s friends. She and Casey were rather different, but rarely fought. They had too weird of a life to turn on each other.
~Alisa~
When they got to the school, there was an orientation thing in the gym instead of first period. Alisa sat with Casey and her friends at first, but she couldn’t hear anything so she moved closer to the front of the bleachers. It was basically just saying that they would have about 2 extra minutes to get to class during the first week, but after that they would have to get to all classes on time and other obvious things. She decided it wasn’t important enough to pay any attention to it, so she looked around for someone else who looked bored. She soon saw another girl sitting a few feet away who looked bored and lonely. It didn’t feel right for both of them to sit alone and bored, so she scooted closer and introduced herself. The other girl introduced herself as Kaiser. She said it was a guy’s name but her parents didn’t really care.
“Huh. That’s cool. My sister’s name is Casey. She’s a junior, but I’m just a freshman.”
“Hey me too! I had thought orientation would be useful, but I’m just bored. How ‘bout you?” questioned Kaiser.
“Same. If we have any classes together I bet my sister would help you get to yours too.” Alisa replied.
“Hey thanks! Wanna compare schedules?”
“Sure.”
So Alisa pulled out her schedule from her bag, to compare with Kaiser’s. They had a few core classes together but no electives. For one thing they both had Science first period, but obviously orientation had taken over first period. They also had lunch and Language arts together. Alisa was proud of herself. Normally she would be to shy to talk to anyone first, and she had just made a friend. Kaiser wanted to meet Casey, so they headed back up towards her group’s area. Alisa introduced them both, and then both she and Kaiser sat back and let the wash of conversation flow over them. Soon orientation was over, and they had to head towards their second period classes.2

~Casey~
Casey has just met Alisa’s new friend. She seemed kind of strange. Not mean, or annoying in any way, but she definitely had a strange quality about her. It was almost as if she were afraid all the time. Maybe she was just paranoid or something. It was strange being around her. Alisa didn’t seem to notice how fearful Kaiser or whatever her name was, looked. It was peculiar. Usually Alisa seemed to notice every little detail, but with this girl Alisa relaxed and seemed to fade out of herself. That never happened at school before. That had never happened when anyone except Casey was around. Maybe Casey was just jealous that Kaiser allowed Alisa to stay relaxed as well as she did around Casey. She decided that must be it. Second period was almost over by the time she convinced herself of that. A few more minutes before she could catch back up with Alisa.
Once second period was over Casey made a point of finding Alisa before third. She needed to talk to her about Kaiser. She could hardly believe she was feeling so weird about Alisa having a friend. She should be HAPPY for her sister! Though, for some reason, she wasn’t.3
