Kayzen (Part One)

The summer sun shone delicately through the barred window, dancing upon Kayzen’s soft features. Her blue eyes sparkled in the sun, but underneath that spark was darkness, and emptiness. She pushed her brown hair back behind her ear with a perfectly manicured hand, standing she brushed down her black short skirt and white low buttoned shirt. Stood at her full height she still looked small and delicate, the perfect curves of her body casting vivacious shadows on the white tiled wall. Mouth slightly parted she breathed silently, her breasts moving gently with each breath. She confidently threw her handbag over her shoulder; head held high she left the interrogation room of the police station. 1

SIX MONTHS EARLIER…2

Kane could feel his heart pounding in his chest, it hurt. It hurt so much he thought his body would contain it no longer. As the pain became more and more intense he closed his eyes. He’d read somewhere that if you concentrated on the pain you can pretend it is not there. He realised it didn’t work. His legs buckled suddenly underneath him and Kane fell heavily to the floor. “Fuck!” He shouted as his knees made contact with the concrete. He put his hands out to stop the fall, and he felt the pain shoot up his arms to his shoulders. He bowed his head and did not move.3

Kayzen sat at a pine table, legs crossed, back arched emphasising her figure. A half drunk cup of coffee sat perched on a white china saucer in front of her. Taking a cigarette from the packet in her handbag, she put the filter to her lips and lit it with professionalism. She glanced at the clock above the counter, he was 10 minutes late. Tapping her foot impatiently she took another long drag of her cigarette; glancing at the clock again she sighed and gathered together her belongings. She took a final mouthful of coffee and stubbed out the burning cigarette. Reaching inside her handbag she pulled out a compact mirror and pink lipstick which she subsequently applied to her pouted lips. As she was about to stand Kane’s body filled the doorway to the café. Kayzen smiled and dropped her handbag back onto the floor.4

“Smoking again Zennie?” Kane said as he greeted her with a kiss on either cheek.
“Been getting yourself in trouble again?” Replied Kayzen as she noticed the cuts on his hands.
“You know me sweetheart, I attract trouble!”
“Get yourself a drink and sit down, we need to talk.” Kayzen ordered.
Smiling at her he turned towards the counter and ordered a plain latte and a slice of the special carrot cake wondering what was so ‘special’ about it. 5

A roll of thunder loudly filled the town centre, travelling down the high-street. Heavy, fat raindrops started to fall on the shop roofs, the pavements, the shoppers; the sudden darkness that had overcome the town was lit briefly by a bright bolt of lightening. A little girl screamed and clung to her mother’s arm. Danny smiled as he watched the panic below him, if weather can scare people so easily, what can a cold calculated human do? He twiddled a gold and blue pen in his left hand, then held it between his teeth as he ran his hands first through the hair gel on his desk and then through his dark hair. Pulling the suit jacket from the back of his chair he caught a glance of himself in the mirror above the fireplace. As he put his arms into the suit sleeves he cautiously approached the mirror, removing the pen from his mouth and placing it slowly into the pocket of his shirt he sighed. He ran an index finger along the shape of the scar that covered his left eye; his body shuddered as he thought her name. “Candice, beautiful, dangerous Candice,” he thought to himself. He took one last look at the scar that meant so much to him, and covered it with sunglasses. Grabbing his car keys he entered the office lift and pressed down. 6
