Chapter 28

“Now the portal should be just past those trees.” shouted Shackni, the Anchynt sent to help with the portal. The general and Sandrah paused simultaneously.
“Ambush!” she shouted. The soldiers turned their attention to the vampires pouring from the portal. At the front was a tall well toned blond a single braid trailing down her back.
“Hello little brother. Are you happy to see your big sister?” she asked as she lit herself a cigarette. “You look well. I see you made something of yourself.” she said as she exhaled a tendril of smoke.
“You are not my sister.” he growled pain crossing his worn face. She pouted her lips and stomped out her cigarette, “Fine then let’s get to work.” she snapped pulling a dagger from her boot. While the general and his sister fought, Shackni pulled a wall of invisibility around him and went to work on the portal. Approximately twenty vampires had made it through the portal. It was his job to not allow it to get higher.
“So this is the sister?” Sandrah asked herself as she absentmindedly battled a low-level vampire. She watched the General as he circled around his sister Erica. He held a jagged blade in his hand. She held a small dagger. She lunged at him grazing his cheek; he jabbed at her stomach but only ripped her green tank top. She turned quickly and kicked him in the jaw. The General stumbled backward but caught himself. Erica used this opportunity to kick the blade out of his hand.
“Let’s dance.” Sandrah turned away from the General to see a broad shouldered vampire in front of her. He had blood dripping from his mouth. Looking around I saw Justin limp on the ground and several decapitated vampires. Allowing the rage to fuel her, Sandrah threw a punch at him and hit him in the stomach. He grinned and hit her in the face. She turned her face back to him, growled and pushed him to the ground and broke his neck.
“Asshole.” she spat. She stood up and pulled a female vampire off David. “Did she bite you?” she asked him urgently.
“No I held her off.” he responded as we looked to see who was left. It appeared that the portal was closed and that Erica was the last vampire. The General looked bad. David and Sandrah stepped forward to go to his aid but he held his hand in protest. Just then Erica grabbed a tree branch and swung it full force at his stomach. She made contact.
“Fuck!” he gasped. He looked at his supposed sister and whispered, “I’m sorry about what happened to you. I’m also sorry for what I have to do.” The general pulled a gun from under his pant leg and aimed for her throat. Erica’s eyes widened and then her body dropped.
The General coughed and blood spilled before him. David and another soldier helped the General walk two miles but he lost too much blood. They carried him and the others who died back to the castle so they could have a proper burial. Sandrah was asked to replace him until they made it back to the base. She accepted. Both portals were closed by the end of the night.
