The Day The Animals Talked

Dan was going out to the park one day with his dog Max. Max was a black and white dog and he loved chasing birds. So much so that Dan who was only 13 had to hold onto his lead really tight.1

When Dan got to the park he sat down and tied Maxs' lead to a tree trunk, so he wouldn't run away. Dan turned away to go towards the swings when he heard something. He could have sworn he heard something. He went to go walk to the swings again but then a deep voice said, "Don't leave me here on my own Dan." 2

Shocked Dan turned round and looked at Max, as he was the only thing that could have said it. "Did you just talk to me Max?"3

"Why yes I did," said Max. "Why is that so odd to you? Come to think of it, you don't normally answer me."4

"Your a dog--" said Dan, "Dogs don't talk!"5

"You must be barking then." said the dog and he begun to laugh.6

"That was not funny at all," said Dan who was begining to move away from the talking dog. "I am getting scared now. A dog isn't really speaking to me!"7

"I don't know what the fuss is about, it's not as if i'm going to hurt you," Max said. "I only wanted some company. I never get anyone to talk to."8

Dan had a look at the time. He had promised mum he'd be home in five minutes. Dan looked at the dog and decided he had no choice he had to take him home. So he untied the dog and grabbed his lead and told him to come along with him.9

"I don't like the kibble you give me," said Max. "It taste funny."10

Dan could not help himself he begun to laugh. 11

By the time the two got home Dan was not so scared, he actually thought it was quite fun to have a talking dog. Max was complaining all the way about things so it was a bit annoying.12

"Mum, you wont believe what happened at the park. I tied Max's lead to the tree as usual and went off to go play and then--"13

"Can you set the table for me darling?" Asked Dan's mother.14

"But Mum, Max talked!"15

"What?" Said Dan's mother. She smiled at him and said, "It's been a long time since i've had day dreams about things like that!"16

"But Mum, I heard him, ask him yourself."17

"OK," said Dan's mum. "Max, how are you today?"18

Max didn't say anything. Dan became rather angry with Max but he could not do anything about it. 19

"I swear Mum--"20

"Come on Dan, set the table please." 21

Dan then decided on something. Max had said the reason why he was talking to him was because he was lonely. So Dan asked his mum if he could have another dog. At first his mum wasn't that happy but then she decided it would be good for Max and Dan.22

Then you know how it goes, Dan didn't hear anything but a bark from his two dogs, which suited him fine!23

Surprisingly this was very much of a hit... It was liked and appreciated by a few on this website, though I posted it on the poetry site of mine. This is Stef who used to have this username. I like this tory, I originally wrote it for little karl who is visually impaired and has other difficulties, wanted it to be not too difficult but also not too patronising. He loves animals. Peacee
