Window ledge 3

She could still hear her screams as she sat on the bench remembering that terrifying moment. 1

It had been so quiet. She could remember the dreadful feeling as no one answered. Nothing had moved, the night felt so cold and uncaring. All her energy had drained and she felt herself pass out again.
Hours later she had woken up in a Spanish hospital, screaming out as she awoke from a nightmare of the crash. Crying she pleaded with a nurse to tell her where Robert was.2

She tried to stop her loud sopping, remembering how close she was to the village houses. The breeze over the river was getting stronger and she stared out towards the mountains again. 3

"You no stay out here girl!!! What am I to do with you!"4

Tolaya's strong acccent broke the silence and made Jan's head snap round.5

"Sorry Tolaya..." here feeble voice answered to the loud spanish woman. 6

"So you should be!" Tolaya had quickly walked up to her and sat next to her, arms around her shoulders protecting her. 7

"My dear child! You are boiling hot! You no listen to me when I tell you get ill, now you ill!"8

Jan struggled to hold back her tears as she fellt Tolaya's warmth around her. Although it was comforting to know she had a friend, Jan didnt want to admit that she needed help still so long after the accident.9

"I'm so sorry, but Robert's injuries were extremely bad, we did everything we could..." 10

The nurses words echoed round Jan's mind, releasing all the feelings she had at that moment. Why couldnt it have been her? Why didnt she let Robert drive so he would have survived? What did he do to deserve death?11

All these questions swam through her mind over and over again. Suddenly she found herself angrily pushing Tolaya's arms from round her shoulders.12

"Dont touch me!!!" 13

As if she was in a dream Jan stumbled off the bench, trying to force her body to run away from the village, the place that reminded her so much of him. The one person she couldnt live without. Tears were streaming down her face, falling off her chin after rolling down her pale, thin cheeks.14

"You can't take him from me! Why did you leave me here?!"15

Jan cried out as she fell to her knees at the other side of the bridge. 16

"Why did you take him. Why couldnt you take me. please..."17

She trailed off as her sobs shook her frail body. Tolaya was watching Jan from the other side of the bridge, knowing that she needed a friend, but not knowing how to help.18

Jan fell forwards, putting her hand out to steady her. There was nothing she could do now, she tried to tell herself. Nothing that could bring him back, nothing that could bring them together again.19

After what seemed like hours, Jan felt Tolaya gently pull her to her feet and help her walk back inside. Jan heard the door quietly shut once Tolaya had layed her in bed, pulling the covers over her and putting on an extra blanket to keep her warm. 20
