Whitney and the Treasure Map

One day Whitney's Mommy asked her if she wanted to help her plant the garden. Whitney was excited because she loved to watch the plants and vegtables grow after her Mommy planted them.
While Whitney was helping turn the soil in the garden she hit something hard with her tiny shovel. When she dug around the object she found a small metal box covered in dirt. "Look what I found Mommy" said Whitney. Her Mommy laughed and said "mabye you found a treasure. Later you can open it up and see what is inside, but right now we have a lot of work to do".
After digging and planting for a few hours it was time to get cleaned up for lunch.
When they were done eating Whitney went outside with Penguin to see if they could open the box she found earlier.
Sitting on the ground Whitney picked up the box and tried to open it. The top seemed to be stuck. So Whitney found a rock and started banging it on the latch until it began to move. Very excited she slowly opened the box and inside was a piece of folded paper. "No treasure Penguin" said Whitney. Lets see what is on the paper.
She carefully unfolded it piece of paper and saw it was a drawing of her farm with lines drawn on it. "Penguin we found a treasure map" cried Whitney.
"Lets see where the map takes us" Whitney told Penguin as she picked up the little kitten and put her inside her sweatshirt pouch.
The map showed the line going around the barn towards the big oak tree. When Whitney and Penguin got to the oak tree she looked at the map again and it showed an arrow pointing to a hole in the center of the tree. Whitney walked around the tree until she found the hole but it was too high to reach. She looked around for something to stand on and saw an old wooden box behind the barn. After dragging the big box back to the tree Whitney climbed up and stuck her hand inside the tree. She felt another box and pulled it out of the tree.
This box looked newer to her. She set Penguin down and sat on the ground next to her. Carefully she opened up the box and inside was a big golden key with another piece of folded paper.
Whitney looked at Penguin and said "This is so exciting". The map shows that we have to go to the loft in the barn, maybe thats what this key is for".
So back to the barn went Penguin and Whitney with the maps and the key she found.
Once they got to the barn she carefully placed all her items in her pockets and put Penguin back in her sweatshirt. Then very carefully she climbed up the ladder into the hayloft.
Once in the loft she started digging through the hay to find whatever the key fit. After about an hour she was tired and about to give up when Penguin started pulling on her pants leg. "What is it Penguin?" asked Whitney. Penguin then jumped up on one haybale, then another and another. When she stopped Whitney looked and saw a big wooden chest. "Hooray!" You found it Penguin" Whitney cried with glee.
Nervously she put the key in the lock and turned it very carefully. Slowly she opened the chest and inside the big chest was a small piece of folded paper. "Looks like someone got to our treasure Penguin" Whitney said saddly. After unfolding the paper it was another map, this one from the barn back to her house. "Hmmm this is so strange" she said to her kitten.
Back down the ladder and to the house they went. When they walked inside the house and followed the map to the kitchen she jumped when all of the sudden "SUPRISE"! She looked around her and all of her friends and family were around her.
A big suprise party for Whitney's birthday. Her parents planned the whole thing by hiding the maps to keep her busy while they set up the party and the guests arrived.
She was so happy and played games with her friends, ate lots of cake and ice cream and even Penguin got to have a little cake as well. everyone laughed when the little kitten's face was covered with frosting.
The biggest suprise was when Whitney went to show her friends her bedroom and she walked in and found a brand new bicycle waiting for her.1

This was the first one I have read and I liked it. I wasn't certain if Penguin was real or not until the loft part. My suggestion would be (for people who haven't read the previous ones) to maybe have soft warm fur or a meow? Just a suggestion. But I liked it and I would read it to my children if they were the right age.
