There were no direct heirs to King Jathan, or so the world has been told. It's been said that King Jathan's wife, Queen Lanai, gave birth to three sons, each a single year apart, and each dying after only days of life. King Jathan recognized his dear wife's grief and thereby organized a society to ease her pain. He called it The Sons of Jathan. All the orphaned and runaway boys became part of the society and were sheltered from the harshness of the world.1
That same world was entirely oblivious to Queen Lanai's fourth pregnancy. She gave birth to a small sickly girl and the King was deeply ashamed. He sent Queen Lanai and the baby to a tower far away and locked them up, promising that he would send for the Queen when the "wench" was old enough. 2
Three years passed and King Jathan finally fullfilled his dreadful promise. He tore Queen Lanai away from the toddling princess and no on spoke of the incident for fifteen years. King Jathan had meant to leave the child there, helpless, until she died. But I'm not dead yet.3
Author notes
This is a prologue to my aspiring novel The Sons of Jathan. There are a couple kinks to work out (and maybe more than I've had time to think about) but I'm willing to take criticism for it.
