Thayer pt.3

Ahh!! Thayer rose from his sleep in a sweating panic. The nightmares had returned, although they were much worse this time. Thayer often dreamed of the men he had slain, but recently he had been more bloodthirsty in his dreams. An evil grin upon his face echoed in his mind as he slashed through each of his victims, replaying them over and over again in his thoughts. Thayer felt an unprovoked rage within him, and needed a release. He decided to do something he had never done before, look for trouble. 1

He gathered his things and headed out the door of his cottage on the outskirts of the city. The city he lived near was called Dementera, a vile city filled with crime and violence. He scaled the wall of the city and dropped with great agility to the inside floor. Thayer climbed up the side of a building on a central street and hopped from house to house, looking for a pack of thieves or burglars in the town; a common sight.2

It only took but a few moments to find a patrol of Murdeath’s subordinates walking the streets to find innocents to harass. Murdeath was above the law in this place, and his men had free reign to collect “taxes” as they saw fit. There were six men in this patrol, but Thayer had no intention of taking them all on at once. Dropping off the rooftop into a nearby alley, he removed his sword and tapped it on the alley floor. “Ting…. ting… ting...” The tapping caught their attention. Cloaked in the darkness Thayer was unnoticed, but he could see them with much ease. The leader of the patrol ordered the lowest ranking man to search the alley. The moment he stepped foot around the corner into the alley, a flash of steel emanated from the darkness. Blood sprayed into the streets from the throat of the patrolman. The leader sent the four others to investigate, as he was fearful of what had occurred in the darkness. Thayer sheathed his blade and climbed the stone surface of the buildings almost instantly, and after crossing a few rooftops, was soon behind the leader of the patrol. 3

Thayer dropped a few feet behind the patrol leader, without making a sound. He unsheathed his katana and took a step closer, now inches behind the trembling leader. Thayer could feel the vibrations of his fear through the ground, and the thirst for blood grew in him. The patrol leader stood uneasily, waiting for a sign from his men, thinking they had met the same fate as the first. The four men returned into his view, with inconclusive looks upon their faces, and a sigh of relief came from the patrol leader. Just as the leader had thought it was over, a look of concern appeared on the faces of his companions, and at that moment came a sound. “Ting…. ting… ting…” Horror came upon the leaders face as his spine was divided in two, and blood spilled in all directions, satisfying Thayer greatly. An evil blood spattered grin on his face, caused the remaining patrollers to flee in terror. Thayer slid his hand into his pouch, and released four stars of metallic flashes down the street; striking each target in the back, causing immobility in two, and the other two limped away. Thayer approached the two squirming patrolmen on the ground. He stared into their eyes, as he made them take their final breathes, slowly.4

The sun broke through the horizon, and Thayer awoke, confused; not quite sure if what had taken place the previous night was another nightmare or reality. He reached under his bed to find his sword, and noticed it was still covered in the blood of his opponents. It was no nightmare. He realized he could never go back to the way he used to be, he could never become a righteous hero; he was now a ruthless vigilante. He accepted the fact, and returned to his sleep. He no longer had nightmares, he no longer had rage built up inside of himself; he had found his release. 5
