The next day was much the same. Paris and I went to school again, expecting to see the familiar sign of Annie rushing to catch the bus, yet as the day before, she didn’t turn up. 1

I racked my thoughts for something useful to reassure Paris but she seemed to be looking as confused as I was.2

“Hey Par… What are you thinking about?” I say3

“Huh? Oh nothing, trying to remember my Spanish dialogue,” she nervously giggles.4

“Look Paris, I think I know you better than that by now! You’re not thinking about Spanish at all are you? You’re thinking about Annie and you know that she would have told you if there was something that was up, I’m sure she’s fine, she always is. Nothing ever is serious.” I smile5

“Yeah but” Paris sighs “I just can’t understand it. She seemed a bit funny on Monday you know and now she’s not here. It’s not like she seemed ill, just…weird.”6

I look over at Paris and nod my head. “Yeah that’s all valid but she’s fine, we’re fine, everyone’s fine! Let’s forget about it, it’s not important to worry about it right now.”7

Paris grins, “you’re right, I mean we could be having great fun at school without having to worry!”8

As we get to school I see Zac waiting on the bench, sitting with Fido and Jamey. It must be such bliss for him to be the only male there, surrounded by girls, yet he doesn’t show it because he knows if he did, he’d probably get a slap!9

“Hey guys” I wave to them all as I go over to kiss Zac. I enwrap him in a hug to let him know that I love him and won’t let him go – and I don’t let go, until he detaches himself from me and tells me to “get off!”10

That’s the thing though. He acts like he doesn’t want to hold me yet deep down I know his true feelings. I know he can’t live without me and that he wants to spend every moment with me. You would say that’s modest but it’s true for me too. I’m lost without him.11

“Still no Annie?” Fido glances over.12

“Nah” Paris says, “Didn’t turn up this morning”13

“Meh” Zac overhears, “I’m sure she’s fine”14

Eddie swags over from his side of the school with a grin plastered all over his face. His hands are placed boyishly in his pocket and his eyes show mischief in them. He sets over to me, Zac and Paris and giggles as he catches his breath to talk.15

“Hehehehehe I’ve had this really genius idea for the last day of school. You know we’re not gonna hardly see anyone else again, apart from us four, we’ll sure as hell stay mates but…” he chuckles to himself.16

“C’mon Eddie” I nudge him “We haven’t got all day, just spit it out and get on with it!”17

“Alright, alright” Eddie says. “Well I think it would be really funny if we egg Mr Henna. It will wipe that stupid smarm off his face.”18

Zac looks at him right in the eyes, he pulls a sort of spaz face and says to Eddie, “Mate you really need to sort your head out. Seriously, that’s original…” he raises his eyebrows to make sure Eddie knows that he’s joking.19

“No wait” Eddie continues, “There’s more. Listen up to this guys. I think on the last day of school we should dress up as detectives and pretend to be solving lots of crimes in the school day. We can talk about different one’s and keep them as secret from the other people. ie George and some other certain people. That’s it. That’s my master plan. It’ll be fun you know! We could do it. Anyone could be a detective if they wanted to be. All they have to have is the motivation.”20

I stare at Eddie and hold Zac’s hand. “You know” I reply, “That last bit you said may possibly have been the most intellectual thing you are ever going to say.”21

“You know what babe,” Zac smiles at me, “I think you’re right.” Eddie lets out a soft, low growl as we friendly punch him, detective style.22
