The Patients Episode 6~ Where Broken Hearts Go

Dear Journal,3

Wow, I can’t believe it’s December already. I also can’t believe it’s gonna be the end of another year. I still don’t know if I want to go home for the holidays or stay here. I mean, I’ve made so many new friends but I didn’t get to spend much time with my parents during Parents’ Week. I guess I better make up my mind soon since I have two days to decide. Well, I gotta get out of here. From the looks of the nurse, I’ve been in the cafeteria for too long. I’ll write more later.4

I closed my journal and got up. The nurse noticed I was done and she opened the door for me. I noticed at the corner of my eye she gave me a dirty look. I let out a sigh and made my way back to my room. I was beginning to hate these new changes. I felt like I couldn’t do anything without being watched. When I got into the wing, I was held back by who else, Valerie.7

“Where were you Jamie?” she asked me like a drill sergeant.8

“In the cafeteria, writing in my journal,” I answered. I held it up to prove I wasn’t lying. She let me go and I walked on. I walked over by Lola’s room and noticed that she was painting her nails. I knocked on her door and she looked up.9

“Hey, come on in,” she said. So, I walked in and took a seat on her bed next to her.10

“Where were you?” she asked me.11

“In the café, writing,” I answered. She looked up at me and had a worried look on her face.12

“You didn’t say anything about…” she started to say.13

“No, Lola, I didn’t,” I said. Then, we heard loud giggles. We turned around to find Bianca and Justin in Lola’s doorway, holding hands.14

“Hey guys,” Lola said as she was blowing on her fresh-painted nails. 15

“Hey,” they both said. Jaime tried to look away from Bianca and Justin, but couldn’t. It was hard to face the fact that Aiden broke my heart. How much she would give to hold his hand again…16

“You okay Jamie?” Justin asked. I blinked and looked up at him. He was still holding Bianca’s hand.17

“Yea, I’m fine,” I lied. Then, I looked and saw everyone walking towards the cafeteria. I got up and Bianca and Justin moved out of my way so I could go to breakfast. I got my food and sat down with everyone. As I ate, I seemed to get sicker by the second. The day wore on, but I felt totally out of place. It seemed like time moved on and I just didn’t go with it. I think everyone seemed to notice.18

“Jaime? Are you still here?” Mr. Nash asked me.19

“Yea, I’m still here,” I answered. 20

“Well, talk to me. You’re acting very spacey today,” he said. So, we started talking about the news but I could hardly focus. I was relieved when I was done. I walked out of his office and practically ran to my room. I closed the door and banged myself into it. Why was I feeling this way? Why couldn’t I get over Aiden? I wanted to hate him for hurting me, but I just couldn’t. I slid down against my door a tried to hold back my tears. But, they fell anyway. Then, I heard a knock on my door.21

“Who is it?” I said, trying to sound like I wasn’t crying but my voice betrayed me.22

“It’s me…Aiden,” Aiden said nervously through the door. I quickly wiped my tears with my hands and got up from the door. I ran into the bathroom to try to make my eyes look less puffy. I walked out and opened the door a crack.23

“Hey,” I said, my voice sounding hoarse.24

“Hi. Can I come in?” he asked so nicely.25

“No, sorry. It’s a mess,” I lied quickly.26

“Are you okay, Jaime? You sound like you’ve been crying. Anything happened?” he asked.27

“No, I’m fine. Can you come back another time?” I asked. I couldn’t bear to look at him, he was breaking my heart with those brown eyes.28

“But, Jamie…” Aiden started to say. I shut the door before he could finish. Then, I heard footsteps. I put my ear against the door to hear who was out there.29

“Don’t worry about her, Aiden. She’ll be fine,” said Bianca.30

“She didn’t sound fine, Bianca,” he snapped.31

“Look, Aiden, just give her space. She’s just having a hard time. We all are,” said Lola. Then, I heard footsteps and I could tell Aiden was gone. I stayed in my room throughout the night and it was finally time for bed. 32

Morning came and I got up and got dressed. When I was ready, I walked out of my room and met up with Bianca, Lola, and Justin.33

“You okay, Jaime?” Lola asked me.34

“Yea, better,” I answered. As we were talking, Cody came over and joined us.35

“Can I talk…to you for a sec, Jaime?” he stammered. I nodded yes and we walked over to a corner. 36

“What’s up?” I asked.37

“Well, I managed to get my portable DVD player back and a few of my DVDs,” he said nervously.38

“Yea…” I said.39

“Well, I was wondering. Do you wanna come by my room? And maybe we could watch a movie together,” he said nervously.  At that moment, reality hit me. Cody was asking me out. I was gonna say no but, I needed something to do to get away from all the chaos. 40

“Sure, I’d like that. I’ll meet you after I go see Mr. Nash, okay?” I asked.41

“Yea, that’s okay…I mean great,” Cody stammered. I said good-bye and walked back over to Lola, Bianca, and Justin.42

“What did Cody want?” Bianca asked me.43

“He actually asked me out,” I answered. Me, Bianca, and Lola let out girlish squeals as we walked towards the cafeteria. The day wore on and by the time it was lunch, our entire wing seemed to know about Cody and me. Throughout the day, all I could think about was my date with Cody. Luckily, that made the time pass.44

“Jaime, I need to talk to you about an important matter,” said Mr. Nash. I blinked and I looked over at him. I’ve totally forgotten that I was still in Mr. Nash’s office.  Seeing the look on his face, it probably wasn’t good.45

“About what?” I asked.46

“I was looking at one of your entries the other day and I’ve been meaning to ask you about it. Do you recall what you wrote on November 3?” he asked me. Suddenly, my stomach tied itself into knots. That was the day Amy came to visit me. That was the day she insulted my friends. That was the day Aiden and me were alone in the rain…47

“Umm, wasn’t that the day when Amy came to visit me?” I asked quickly.48

“Yes, it was. Apparently, you had some alone time with Aiden. And you also wrote that you thought that Aiden was almost going to kiss you but Valerie and Mr. Harrison found you two,” said Mr. Nash, reading from my journal.49

“Well, I may have exaggerated a little, Mr. Nash…” I started to say.50

“Jaime, you don’t need to lie to me. Now, this is very serious. Most patients who get caught in a relationship have serious consequences. But, since you’re new, I’ll let you slide. Now, are you and Aiden in a relationship or have you two ever had one at all?” Mr. Nash asked me.51

“No, Mr. Nash. It was only a infatuation, nothing more,” I answered. To my surprise, I sounded truly honest.52

“That’s alright, Jaime. But remember, relationships are forbidden,” he said. I nodded and we continued on with our regular conversations. Next thing I knew, I was walking out with my journal in my hand. I walked back to my room and fixed myself up. After I was positive I looked okay, I opened my door. Aiden was standing right there I let out a slightly loud scream.53

“Sorry, Jaime. I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said reassuringly.54

“What do you want?” I asked.55

“I just wanted to see you. We haven’t hung out in a while,” he answered. I looked up into his eyes and saw longing and sadness. My heart melted and all I wanted to do was hug him and say ‘everything’s gonna be fine’.56

“I’m sorry. That’s sounds great but, not today. How about in a few days, okay?” I asked.57

“Sure,” he said. Then, he walked out of my doorway. I looked out to see if Valerie or any adult was there to catch me. The coast was clear. I walked across to Cody’s room and knocked lightly on his door. It opened a crack and Cody stuck his head out.58

“Oh, hey. I thought you were Valerie. Come on in,” he said. He opened the door wider and I walked in. His room looked like everyone else’s, except he had band posters and pieces of paper taped to the wall.59

“What’s the pieces on paper on your wall?” I asked.60

“Oh, those are lyrics. I wrote on the wall once and got in major trouble. So, I write on a piece of paper and tape it to the wall for inspiration,” he answered. 61

“Wow, that’s cool,” I said.62

“Umm, so what movie do you wanna watch?” he asked me. He then handed me a stack of DVDs and I looked through them. I saw ‘Say Anything’ and I gave that movie to Cody.63

“Okay. Say Anything it is,” he said. He went to his bed and turned on his DVD player. He opened the case and took it out. He put the movie in as I made myself comfortable on his bed. We both laid on our stomachs across his bed and watched the movie. As the movie went on, I noticed Cody kept taking his hand away. I think he wanted to hold my hand, but was afraid he would throw me off. I took his hand and we’d finger-laced, letting him know that it’s okay. The next thing I knew, we were kissing, and then we started making out. In the back of my mind, a voice was saying ‘Stop it Jaime! You love Aiden. You can’t ignore your feelings for him’, but I ignored it. To my surprise, he was an amazing kisser. His hands around my waist felt good. Then, Peter Gabriel’s ‘In Your Eyes’ came on. I thought this moment was just perfect. Then, Cody let go and he looked at me with his dark brown eyes.64

“You know, you’re the first girl I’ve ever kissed. Went on a date with, in that matter,” he admitted. We both laughed and continued on. It wasn’t long till the credits came on we finally let go of each other. I got up from his bed and fixed myself in his bathroom. He followed me to the door and took my hand.65

“So, you wanna do this again?” he asked me.66

“I’d love to,” I responded. We kissed each other and opened the door a crack. No one was in the hallway and I left Cody’s room. I went back to my room and laid on my bed. I felt so happy and was glad to have found someone. Cody was a great guy and he didn’t hurt me. I was almost considering not going home for the holidays. Dinner came and I felt so excited to tell Bianca and Lola about my date.67

“Oh man, I had such a good time,” I told them.68

“Did you guys kiss?” Bianca asked me with enthusiasm.69

“Yup,” I answered. We all squealed and continued eating our dinner. As we were eating, I noticed Lola was very quiet. Sure, she listened in on my date, but she didn’t say much.70

“Something wrong, Lola?” I asked her.71

‘Yea, what’s up? You’re pretty quiet,” said Bianca. 72

“Jaime, I need to tell you something and I don’t know if you’re going to like it,” Lola blurted out.73

“What?” I asked.74

“Well, while you were on your date with Cody, Aiden came looking for you…” said Lola and then she stopped. She looked really worried as if she didn’t want to tell the rest.75

“Well, what did you say?” I asked, sounding a little annoyed.76

“Okay, I told him about your date and…he didn’t look happy,” Lola finally finished.77

“So?” I asked, not getting her point.78

What do you mean, ‘so’? I thought you wouldn’t want him to know since you still like him,” Lola said.79

“Lola, I don’t like Aiden. Okay, I’m over him,” I said.80

“You sure? I mean, you looked really unhappy the other day…” Bianca started to say.81

“Guys, I’m over him,” I said, but my voice betrayed me.82

“Jaime, are you only dating Cody to get over Aiden? Cause, that’s not right. You shouldn’t use someone like that,” Bianca said. But before I could defend myself, the cafeteria doors opened and Aiden came through. He walked straight to our table and took a seat. 83

“Hey, can I talk to you for a second, Jaime?” he said. I nodded and we both got up. Aiden and me walked over to my wing. After we stopped at my door, he looked at me straight in the eye.84

“I, uh, heard about your date with Cody,” he said.85

“Yea,” I said. Then, it grew silent again and Aiden kept pacing around, like he was trying to find his words. I was beginning to get impatient.86

“Look, about us…” he started to say.87

“What us, Aiden? There is no us,” I stated.88

“But, there was something between us, right? I mean, do you really love Cody, the way you love me?” he asked. Now, I was just pissed.89

“What the hell are you saying, Aiden? Yes, I do love Cody. And, we never loved each other. That kiss…” I shouted.90

“Showed how much we loved each other,” he finished, sounding almost heart-broken.91

“No, it was nothing. We promised we would lie and say it never happened, remember?” I shouted.92

“I never wanted to agree to that but we had to. Come on Jaime, you know that,” he shouted. I was so fed up with him I opened the door to my room.93

“So, does this mean we’re not friends anymore?” he asked. I turned around and looked at him. At that moment, I didn’t know what to feel. I felt, hurt, frustrated, sympathetic, confused…all at the same time. But, I knew I had to make a choice. I could close my door and that would end our friendship. Or, I could hug him and say ‘will work this out’. 94

“Look, Aiden it’s not that I hate you. It’s just…a lot has happened and it’s a little overwhelming. Just, please, give me some time and I promise will talk, okay?” I asked. 95

“Well, how long is gonna take?” he asked, sounding disappointed.96

“I don’t know,” I asked. I walked over to him and we exchanged a long hug. He let me go and I resided in my room. A couple hours later, there was a sharp knock on my door. I got up and opened it up to find Valerie, Mr. Nash, and Mr. Harrison in my doorway. Great.97

“Yes?” I asked.98

“Jaime, we need to tell you something very important,” said Mr. Nash. I let them in and I started getting nervous. Did Mr. Nash tell Mr. Harrison about Aiden and me? The thought made me squeamish. I sat on my bed while the three of them stood in a line, kind of hovering over me.99

“So, what do you wanna tell me?” I asked.100

“Jaime, we received a e-mail from your father. He requested that you read it immediately,” said Mr. Harrison. He handed me a piece of paper and I looked down and began reading…101

Hi sweetie, hows everything? Well, I hope that you’re feeling better and making many new friends. We certainly miss you. The reason I’m writing to you is because of mom. You see, after Parents’ Week, mom started to get sick. I thought it was just her AIDS so I told her to keep taking her pills. But, it’s gotten worse. I had to take her to the hospital and she’s there, getting treated. I don’t know if mom will die or not but, we must all keep hope. I hope Mr. Harrison will let you come see us over the holiday break. I miss you and so does mom. Hope to see you soon.104

After I was done, I placed the paper aside and grabbed a hold of my bed. I started to feel tears fall down my face. Mr. Nash walked over and placed his hand on my shoulder. 108

“Jaime, do you wish to leave and go visit your parents over break?” he asked me. I nodded yes and he looked over at Valerie and Mr. Harrison.109

“Okay, you will leave tomorrow morning. Valerie, please give back her electrical stuff and help her pack, okay?” he ordered. Valerie nodded and walked out of the room. After a few moments, Mr. Harrison left too.110

“Would you like me to stay for the night, Jaime?” Mr. Nash asked me. I looked up at him and he gave me a small smile.111

“No thank you,” I managed to say. He nodded and got up from my bed and left my room. A few minutes later, Cody, Bianca, Justin, and Lola came in. They took a place on my bed and I told them everything. After I was done, I cried and fell into everyone’s arms. Lola stroked my hair while Bianca rubbed my back and Cody grabbed my hand and squeezed it. 112

I guess they stayed for the night when I woke and realized they were still here. I got up and went to the bathroom and fixed myself up. There was a knock on my door and Valerie came in with my suitcase of clothes and a plastic bag that had my phone, MP3, etc. I grabbed everything and we all followed Valerie. We all squashed into the elevator and we finally made it to the entrance. Mr. Harrison, Mr. Nash, Aiden were there, waiting with my dad. I ran over to him, dropped my stuff, and we hugged for a long time. After letting go, I said good-bye to everyone, promising them I’ll be back soon. I shook hands with Mr. Nash and Mr. Harrison. When I came over to Aiden, we exchanged looks basically saying ‘see you in the new year’. Then, Cody came over and took my hand.113

“I’m gonna miss you,” he said.114

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back before you know it,” I said. We kissed and my dad handed me my winter coat. I put it on and walked out of Green Wood. Snow fell on the ground as I got in my dad’s car. Then, we were off to the hospital, to try and have the happiest Christmas possible.115
