FLIGHT of the BUMBLE-BEE1
The bumble-bee that had strayed into the claustrophobic backroom we were working in that day was a monster. And my fifteen year-old had issues with even the smallest of wasps. Things with wings and stings had just always been a no-no.2
While I rooted around for a glass and a cardboard lid, I tried to distract him.3
“They can’t fly you know”4
“What?”. Danny’s response was distracted. His eyes tracked the intruder relentlessly.5
Where was that damned glass?6
“If you break him down into his component parts , lay all the data out on a drawing-board – wing-span, body-mass, drag-coefficients , power-to-weight ratios- everything , then any self-respecting aeronautical engineer will have to concede that ,as a flying machine , our friend here is an aerodynamic impossibility .Apparently – he can’t fly . He just does”7
By now the bee was captive in an overturned glass and we were moving him outside. Danny’s curiosity began to get the better of his fear.8
He peered closely at our prisoner, who was now haplessly walking the cardboard floor of his new glass cell.9
As soon as I lifted the glass the bee took off on his mazy flight which saw him clear a two-storey building in seconds. Danny watched it go .When it had disappeared over the rooftops at a speed which, in hindsight, was more than impressive, he looked at me kind of quizzically.10
“They can’t fly?”11
“Nope!”.12
“Well, they jump pretty good! “13

Funny! our friend here is an aerodynamic impossibility Truth as well! What God ordered a bumble-bee?

To tell the truth , the 15yr old was a 35yr.old! And ,yes , its a long standing mystery how bumble-bees fly ( only recently solved with super-high-speed filming techniques and computer enhanced wind-tunnel analysis! There's an excellent poem about it - by Edward Lear - The Bumble-bee -very funny.Glad you laughed .Occasionally I catch one just to tell the story - with props !Thanks for reading it and for the feedback !

Lol I liked it. So cute. But wait, a fifteen year old? Sounds more like somewhere around 6. Mmm...it was amusing though. Is that true about bumblebees?
