That evening, Belen met Erasmus in the courtyard by the fountain. Both boys looked at each other in anger. 1
“Why are you angry with me, Belen?” asked Erasmus.2
“I know. I know your secret love for Jerom. I know how you want to keep him for you, and only you, away from me.”3
Erasmus’ passion rose within him. He ran at Belen, tearing at his toga. Belen pulled at his, and both boys rolled over together, punching, kicking and biting. Erasmus climbed onto Belen, holding him by the penis. 4
Jerom watched from his balcony. He ran down the stairs and towards the other boys. Belen felt exhausted. There was no way out, no way of winning the fight. He had but two options, death or surrender. Erasmus seemed so passionate, he was sure that Erasmus could kill him if he were not to surrender.5
“I give in. You can have him.”6
Jerom watched, and came closer to the boys. He asked what they were fighting about.7
“We’re fighting for you!” Erasmus said. “And I won the fight, do I win your love?”8
“Well, ever since I saw you I loved you more than I loved any other boy. But, when I heard I was not your ideal, I thought there was nothing I could do about it. What made you change your mind?”9
Erasmus, who was putting his toga back on, responded “I did not know how to say I did not love Cicero. I love him, but only as one would love a brother. I cannot love him romantically. Besides, I wanted to make you jealous. I loved you ever since I met you.”10
