Little Whitney was six years old and lived on a big ranch. She lived with her Mommy, daddy and big brother. They had many cows, bulls, chickens, and cats that roamed the ranch. 1
Whitney also had a dog named buddy. Buddy would always follow Whitney and when Buddy was not chasing critters off the ranch they would run and play together. 2
Living out in the country there were no neighbors so Whitney made the best of it and played with the animals. 3
Chickens are to silly to have fun with but the cats would have kittens and they were so much fun. All fuzzy and playful. 4
Whitney had names for all of the kittens as well as all of the other animals. She would walk around the ranch and talk to everyone of them. 5
"Hello Thomas", she would say to the Bull. "How are you today Sally", she would say to one of the chickens. All the animals loved Whitney because she always had some kind of treat for each one and she was such a nice little girl.6
One morning she got worried because one of the kittens was missing. When they got bigger it was hard to keep track of them but she was just a baby kitty. "Penguin" was her name because she was black with a white belly and she was chubby so she waddled a little when she walked.7
Whitney and Buddy went looking for Penguin and looked all over the barn and the yard but could not find her. Whitney's Mommy, Daddy and Big Brother were very busy working around the ranch and did not have time to help her look. She told Buddy to find Penguin and Buddy ran off in search of the little kitty.8
While buddy sniffed around for Penguin, Whitney decided to look behind the barn where she saw a stray dog poking his nose around in the pile of old tractor parts. Whitney called for Buddy to chase the dog away. When Buddy started barking the other dog ran off. What could he have been trying to get in this old rusty junk?, Whitney said to Buddy. 9
Then they both heard a very soft whimper and Whitney started moving some of the junk off the pile. Under all that junk was a very dirty, tired and scared kitten. "Penguin" Whitney shouted with joy. She picked up the little Kitty and carried her back to the house. Her mom said she could keep her inside to be cleaned up and she could sleep in Whitney's room tonight only because the kitty was so scared.10
That night Penguin slept on Whitney's chest and purred all night long with Buddy watching through the window so she did not wander off again.11
