Ellimere the Strange - Chapter 4

Chapter 41

Danagar paced through the night. A look of both satisfaction and an unsatisfied thirst mingled together on his cold, pallid face. He was happy that he had injured a man, but very unhappy that he had failed to kill his target. Oranna will be displeased… but she didn’t have to know, yet. He climbed to the top of Midnight Mountain and stared across to the moonlit sea. The Island of Midnight Sky wasn’t very big as the mountain seemed to take up the most of its area. Lucky for its inhabitants the Mountain was an inactive Volcano, but still there was the slight chance that it could swallow everything up with its lava if it erupted again. If it did. He stood with his feet firmly placed on the ground and sent out a War Cry as loud as he could. The next moment a wolf howled, an evil smile appeared on his face.2

“I will find you Ellimere. And when I do, you will die.”3

Typical drama written by a man with too much time on his hands. That’s when he wasn’t with Oranna. He leapt up off of the ground and disappeared into the darkness. Down on the side of the mountain stood a small boy. His eyes shone silver in the moonlight, his face almost blank. He walked towards where Danagar stood previously and looked to where he had disappeared from. His eyes brimming with curiosity as to how he could have done that. This boy was being controlled, he didn’t move like any other seven year old.4

“When will you learn?” it said.5

“Oh for goodness’ sake Danagar. When will you stop wanting to kill me?” said Ellimere.6

She was the one who was controlling the boy. She was thankful that Danagar didn’t see him. Evan and Nathan were still sitting on the floor. She had just told Evan about herself and told them both about what had happened.7

“So when are you going to leave?”8

“After I have informed Mistresses Fallon and Katy of my identity. Then I will be departing to go back to my home.”9

“Can I come with you?”10

“No Nathan you can’t,” said Evan.11

“Why? It’s not like I was doing a good enough job around here. You only gave me that stupid job because I am your son. Come on, give it someone else already.”12

“You’re right, maybe I should.”13

“Dad I’m nearly eighteen, you can trust me okay?”14

“He is right Evan, you should trust him more. Let him have some room for a while.”15

“You mean I can go with you?”16

“Only if your father agrees with what you have said.”17

“Okay. I’ll still go even if he says no.”18

“Fine, you can go. But I would like you to help Ellimere. Use your bloody skills for once okay?”19

“Yes sir.”20

Nathan felt stupid for saying it, but nevertheless he did. He stood up in front of them both. Danagar had created a great deal of pain in Nathan’s arm. It twinged painfully as he moved it. Ellimere looked at him as he gasped.21

“Hold your arm out for me.”22

Nathan did so and let her take a gentle hold of it.23

“All I can do is stop the pain, I can’t heal it. This is because this injury was created by a demon. I cannot heal injuries made by a demon.”24

“Okay.”25

She waved her hand over his arm a few times while keeping her eyes closed, again she muttered some silent words and the pain was lifted from his arm.26

“Hey, thank you. It’s gone.”27

“Yes, please be careful not to disturb the wound. Or the pain will start up again.”28

“Yes, thank you Ellimere.”29

“Call me Ellie okay?”30

He nodded.31

“What will you do Mr Campbell?”32

“Will you just call me Evan, and I have to stay here. This place needs me.”33

Ellie stood up taller than before. She was a guardian crossed with a faerie, but she wasn’t as tall as Danagar himself. Her heritage had been crossed at her creation. She was conceived like any normal child but her heritage was very different to the others almost like her. A part of her face was covered in a pattern that looked very much like a pattern that you would find on a butterfly’s wings. It wasn’t clearly visible, it sat under the skin of her cheek and her hair covered it up so it blocked it. Danagar was also a cross, but he was half guardian, half demon. He always used to hide away from the others. These periods were when he began to betray them. He had been working for Oranna for a very long time and they eventually disowned him and he left. Ellie never felt rejected, or pushed away… she had always served the Elders and did whatever she could. Danagar’s departure had left her unable to serve them and so she went into hiding. She took a new identity upon herself and lived seventeen years as a small girl in a big world. Unfortunately during this period she had grown in touch with the human race and her human family. Her emotions had grown immensely. So much so that by the end of hiding she was too different to everyone else. Most of them had thought she was insane and never spoke to her. She only had four friends by the end of it.34

“You okay Ellie?”35

She had somehow lost her concentration on what was happening around her.36

“Oh uh yes, I’m okay.”37

Ellie had grown too close to humans that she was finding it hard now to speak as formally as she used to in front of the Elders. She was also finding it hard not to swear as well.38

“You know what? Fuck the formalities I can’t take it anymore…”39

“Okay… what?”40

“Sorry, I’m struggling to be formal again, too much time around you lot! I’m done acting.”41

“That sounds cool?” said Nathan, confused again.42

“Right I’m off you two. I need my sleep,” yawned Evan. “You take care, you hear? Do something to save your ass for once, don’t leave all the legwork for everyone else…”43

“Don’t be so hard on him Evan.”44

“Gah, whatever…”45

Evan disappeared around the door frame and looked around it again.46

“Please take care. Help Ellie and kick some ass. I’ll see you soon.”47

“Bye Dad.”48

“Bye Evan.”49

“See yas.”50

And on that he disappeared completely. Ellie started to tidy the room, she chose to do this the human way. She didn’t want to use her magic for something that didn’t matter much to her. So the night passed away as she quickly put the room back together. Then by sun up, she was done.51

She used a small spell to put the door back together without a scratch on it and put it up in its frame. Just as she had finished there was a knock on the door. Fallon and Katy stood in the doorway when Nathan opened it.52

“Ah, you two better come in.”53

They looked at one another and then at Nathan, afterwards stepping into the dormitory.54

“Hi Nathan, how are you?”55

“I’m good.”56

“Where’s Cali?”57

“Um, I’ll be back in a sec okay. Wait here.”58

“Okay what’s going on…”59

“Wait a minute and you’ll see.”60

Nathan followed the staircase upstairs.61

“Ellie,” he whispered, “Are you ready?”62

“Yes, one moment okay.”63

He went back down soon followed by Ellimere.64

“Nathan who’s… that?”65

“Woow.”66

If they hadn’t ever seen a Goth like her they had now. Both being Goths themselves they hadn’t ever seen someone like Ellie. She pushed her long black hair out of her face and smiled.67

“Hi guys.”68

“Whoa, who are you, and where’s Cali, Nathan?”69

“This… is Cali. That isn’t her name though anymore. This is Ellimere.”70

“Wow. You’re gorgeous.”71

“Why thank you. Yes I’m Ellimere Huntervale.”72

“As in the Ellimere-?”73

“Yes I am Ellimere the Strange,” she said in a sarcastic sort of voice.74

“Whoa… cool.”75

“Now let’s cut to the chase eh?”76

Ellie told the girls her story. They sat for a while listening to her. Then when she finished they both agreed that they wanted to help her fight. So all of the four stood in a small square shape that was meant to resemble a circle and placed a hand on the person to their right’s shoulder and bowed their heads.77

“We all agree on this day February the ninth… To fulfil our promise to win this fight…We will hold strong through all the dark times… And never stray from what we know is right… Hope be our candle, faith be our light… Love be our friend to hold us tight… We will find the strength to carry on through… We will fight against you, we will defeat you.”78

Ellie chanted this as they repeated, and they placed their left hands in the centre of the square.79

“Ildefirous Soline… Faith be strong,” she chanted. The friendship spell never failed, the bond becomes more powerful as love for one another grows. This would bring them great luck, vitality and courage in the darkest of times. To build this, they would have to be honest and true to one another. “Ildefirous Soline…” they repeated.80

Their journey would begin soon enough, but they had to leave Gareham first. Nathan, Fallon and Katy departed to prepare for their journey and gather the necessary essentials. Ellie went up to her room again and into the airing closet beside her bed. The boiler had been placed in an attic compartment beside the door. She slid into the closet and forced her way through her clothes that she no longer needed being able to change into what she pleased without being questioned. She got into a clearing at the back of the cupboard and opened up a secret door. This was where she stayed all night if she wasn’t tired. All of her real possessions remained in there. This included weapons. Their was a very big box of weapons that she could take along with her but all she needed was a sword and a dagger. She could use some armour, but she could make better with new materials.81

“I’ve been on Earth too long,” she whispered to herself.82

She picked out her best sword and dagger. The metal was unlike anything ever seen before, coloured a strange Silver, it felt unreal. Like liquid… But she was used to it. She had forged it herself fifty years before and she hadn’t been able to wield it for nearly eighteen. Ellie felt a lot of pressure lifted now that she wasn’t “human” anymore. Anyone would have felt relieved to break out of a disguise if they had been in hiding for nearly twenty years. So she picked them up and equipped herself with a buckle for her sword and dagger to fit into, and sealed the door. She would be back when this war has ended. She went back downstairs and waited for the others to arrive.83

    cool

I like it. I want to hear a little more about Danager. Why did he betray Ellimere? Does he have some alterier motive? Is he totally and compleaty evil or is there some good left in him?
    Great story.
