Chapter 1: Visions1
Year: 2012 AD2
The galaxy is a swirling torrent of stars, with several arms reaching out on all sides. On the edge of one arm, nearly all the way on the outside, a yellow medium sized star glowed confidently over it’s nine, relatively small, planets. On the outskirts of this solar system lay an icy blue planet, followed by gas giants. There is a small belt of asteroids, and very close to the star are 4 small, rocky planets. A small red planet, too cold for life, and a bigger, bright planet, covered by clouds, too hot for even the toughest steel to remain solid. In between these two planets, lay a smaller blue planet, covered by vast oceans, and vast expanses of land. The only planet in the vicinity that contains a most prized commodity, life.3
Moving closer in, there is a small peninsula, sticking out of a mass of land owned by the greatest power on the planet. This planet is the cradle of things to be, a power so great pulses outward from this planet. The potential rulers, and saviors of the galaxy, reside on this planet. Still in earlier stages of development, this planet is home to the human. A seemingly innocent race, almost ripe to begin their trek of galactic domination, is about to be forced into a war that will decide the fate of the whole galaxy.4
Here is where the potential reaches its peak, a hero of sorts, in the most unlikely of places. Leila Farnum looked up at the stars in the clear, cold, night sky. Her dark brown hair touching her light skin, gray-blue eyes shimmering in the night. She wore a light winter jacket. The air that entered her body felt crisp inside her lungs. She could see her breath in the cold, and the stars shimmering overhead were as bright and clear as ever seen before. The jeans she wore were tight against her skin, her flip-flop sandals doing nothing to protect from the cold. She crossed her arms over, and placed her hands under her arms, to conceal heat. Her eyes were very thoughtful, showing wisdom beyond her years, revealing only to some, and the darkness that plagues her entire being. Inside her eyes, was more than knowledge; it was ability that was born in her. She thought knew what she was capable of, but knew that there was more to it than she could ever learn.5
Standing next to her was Andrew Luseti; he was a taller person, at least one head taller than her. He had very dark hair, and the same color eyes. It was short cropped, combed forward in a flip. He was standing next to her in a Hawaiian style t-shirt, and shorts. She never knew how he could stand wearing such clothes, but he never complained about the cold. Even though she could tell he was freezing. Andrew was a little strange at times, but he had been a good friend of Leila’s and hadn’t put her down for her abilities, and that really helped her, to just have one good friend. He often took her out to a lot of different places, trying to get her to make more friends, but she often felt distant from other people. They were different from her, but she was close to Andrew, because there was something about him, that she couldn’t stay away from. A sort of similarity that she couldn’t find. She put it out of mind, and turned to Andrew, tearing her eyes away from the sky, and asked him, “So, where is it we’re going again?”6
“A friends house, you haven’t met him yet, but a few people are going to be there. Your sister is already there I think.” He said.7
“My sister? She could have driven us! Why do you always insist on walking?” She said.8
“I like to walk, we can talk, bond. Lets talk about what’s been bothering us today. For me, its parasitic worms. And you?” he said in that normal cheery air that always seemed to be around him.9
“Well, I’m about to be forced into contact with a few more people that I don’t know, that I probably don’t like, when what I really want, is maybe some quiet time, together, alone. We could talk, actually get to know each other.” She had been hinting that was what she wanted for some time now. He was just oblivious. Having stopped hinting, and telling him outright, she expected to get it soon, but he continued to do what he thought best.10
“But, Leila! This could be fun!” He said, and at her frown he said. “OK, can we just do this, just one more time, if you don’t like it this time, we’ll do what you want for a change.”11
She sighed; she’d give this one more shot. She was sure she knew how to get him right where she wanted, and that he wanted it to. Andrew was good at concealing things. He had done a good job at concealing his hatred of her last boyfriend, but lost it right before they broke up. Her relationships didn’t last long, she felt too distant from most people. All except Andrew, she felt some kind of bond holding them together. She couldn’t leave him, she didn’t want to ever. She would get him soon. Not likely soon, because she could sense his fear.12
She could often sense things like this, emotions, and feeling. She could read minds to a point. Numbers. Think of any number, and hold it in your mind, and she could, see it. Or feel it. She had much difficulty describing it. Nearest, it was an impulse, it told her to just, say this, or say that! She wasn’t good at that, but she could do other things, things that she could, hone. Her skills were weak, but they did a good job. She could, move things. People called it telekinesis. She could, under common expression, “Move things with her mind”. That wasn’t a proper way to put it; it wasn’t with her mind, just a feel. She moved things, with, an essence, her deepest essence of being. All she had to do was reach out with, herself, and touch whatever she wanted to move. Andrew told her that she seemed to glow when she did this, but only just.13
“Leila, are you ok with this?” Andrew said, interrupting her thoughts.14
“What? Oh, yeah, ok, well do that today. Maybe I’ll like it this time.” She didn’t feel it.15
Andrew walked alongside her in silence a few minutes before he said, “Well, you always want to talk. What do you want to talk about?” He turned and grinned at her.16
“I just don’t feel like talking right now. Is that all right?” She said irritably.17
“Leila, don’t do this, I just don’t get you sometimes.” Andrew continued walking but didn’t say anything.18
She felt kind of guilty, turning him away. But the truth was that she didn’t want to talk to him when he wanted to talk. She was amazed he held out with her as long as he did. She was in a thinking kind of mood, she felt so distant, she liked him, and it was plain to see that he liked her, even if he couldn’t tell. She also knew that this would be another one of those nights, where she would pretend to be interested in what everybody else was interested in, and try and figure out what they were all thinking. She had to admit, if it weren’t for all these get-togethers, she wouldn’t have half the psychic abilities that she had. She was getting quite good at it she had to admit. She was almost looking forward to it. Maybe this time she would get a clear reading.19
They had been walking for some time, when Andrew finally turned into a small neighborhood. It was on a circular drive. They passed a few houses, one, two, three… seven houses down the block he turned down a driveway. She had expected him to knock on the front door, but he turned towards the gate in the back. He turned around and said to her “They are sitting out on the back porch, this is just what we do. They have a dog, just let her smell you, she’ll be fine.” 20
She looked at him, and he looked straight back at her. It was dark, but she could still see the color in his eyes distinctly, he had blue eyes, bright, and watery. Her eyes were blue, but she considered them to be closer to gray. She hated her eyes, why couldn’t they be more like Andrews? He continued to stare, and she wasn’t sure how long they had been staring into each other’s eyes when a familiar voice snapped her out of it. 21
“When are you two gonna kiss already?” Leila turned around and saw Tiffany, her sister. She was a year older than Leila, but acted as if the difference were twelve.22
“I’m coming! Just give me a second!” Leila shouted angrily.23
“All right, just don’t get too close. Remember to keep chaste. He’s a little dangerous. You know…”24
“Just shut your pie hole and give me a minute!” Leila interrupted, “Will you just cut the crap and give me some space!” Leila leaned up against the wall, and banged the back of her head a few times before anyone could move. “All right, I’m ready.”25
She stood herself up straight, ready to face anything. She had herself prepared for the worst. Tiffany glared at her, why does she do this now? In front of Andrew? Why does she always do this in front of the only person that really cares about her? It was never like this at home. She sighed heavily, well, might as well make the best of this.26
She followed Andrew into the back yard; there was a large black dog. She eyed it nervously, and she realized that is was…27
“A pit bull?” She yelled, and the dog’s head turned towards her. 28
“Pit, lab mix. Don’t worry, she’ll get used to you.” Andrew said calmingly.29
The dog seemed to be afraid of her, and it nervously walked over, Leila held out her hand and the dog sniffed, running away, and coming back.30
“So, you’re Leila?” A new voice asked.31
“Yes, and you are?” The dog sniffed her hand again nervously.32
“Just call me Mat. Names Mathew, and there’s Kim, Kyle, Steve, and Shawn.” Jay pointed to those that were sitting down, “Make yourself comfortable.” 33
She sat down, and took a Coke that was offered to her. They were talking about some movie she’d never heard of. She just sat and listened, maybe they’d change the topic again. Not likely anything she’d have any grounds in. She drank her Coke, and found herself wanting, not the Coke, but something else. Wine, beer, vodka, anything with alcohol in it. She didn’t care. There was no alcohol, ever. Andrews’s friends just didn’t drink. She looked at Mat. Decided to pass the time, so she focused on him. Moved a little closer, to get a better reception. She saw him, his body. She traveled under his skin, felt his body, his heat. The vibrations of his voice were visible. The whole world slowed down. Her body slowed down, everything froze. She felt something. There were other thoughts in her head, but they weren’t hers. Something was inside her! Invading her mind. It was not hers it was inside of her. NO! This could not be! She was supposed to be inside of his! Not his inside of hers!34
She felt herself floating… if that’s how it could come to be described, and could feel his thoughts, they were pictures in her mind, like objects, she couldn’t identify them all at once, they were shapeless, and held no form. When she… moved closer to one, she could identify the thought that she was looking at. She wasn’t sure exactly how she came about moving, it was more a feel of motion than anything. She moved up to a thought, and it was about herself, she soon realized. Cold? Distant? Is that how she really was? There were several items attributed to his image of her, none were the same thought, Leila wondered if any time had passed. She could see more, he was in love with Kim, and he thought Andrew was fun. The last thought she went to, before finally settling in, they were words, his thoughts to himself, “My god she looks so fine, I’d love to…” Images flashed across her mind, filling in for the thoughts. Horrible, explicit images.35
She screamed as she fell backwards out of her chair. There were a few staring eyes. Tiffany was kneeling over her first. “Leila, we need to talk. Alone.”36
Having said that she grabbed Leila’s wrist. And she dragged her around the side. Out of the fence, near the back yard. Leila was drenched in sweat. She had never felt that before, it was the first time it had worked so well. “Look Tiff, you know this isn’t really the best time…” Leila began.37
“I know what you were doing, and that wasn’t the right time. You don’t do that, ever. Not to people you don’t know. You may find out things about them you wouldn’t like, it would destroy everything you could have had. I know what you found, and I know what you’re thinking. I also know you never want to see him again. And don’t give me that look. You know what I mean. Yes I know what you did. You have anything to say for yourself?”38
Leila stood there for a moment, in complete shock. Both at what she had just seen, and her sisters knowing. Finally she said, “He, wanted to… well, you know. He was thinking about me! But how could he think that when he feel so strongly for her?”39
“He never said anything. He only felt so inside. He is a great person if you know him. Before you judge you should see how Kim feels. Don’t hold somebody’s thoughts against them. You don’t know him like I do.”40
“I know, but how did you know?”41
“When you read his mind I could see it happen. I can’t explain it, I’ve never seen it before, but I still knew. I might be more advanced, but you have much more potential than I do. Dad said so once. He taught you all he can; we both have to figure the rest out on our own. Just, don’t do that to people you don’t know. I know him, and I feel it’s all right. He knows about me anyway. Not you, don’t worry. He might figure it out, so be careful, especially after that.”42
She had a point, but how could she have any trust over this, horrible person? He had wanted to… She screamed, unable to bear it all. Tiffany quickly grabbed her shoulders, and brought her head close to her. She began to whisper in her ear.43
“It’s all right, I know that its hard, but, you have to be able to bear it, because it doesn’t get any better.” Tiffany whispered softly. 44
Leila calmed down. Nodded her head, and said “Yeah, you’re right, I won’t do that anymore.” She paused, “Thanks.”45
Suddenly a shrill voice in the back yard said, “Yo! You guys! You ready to come back yet? What just happened anyway?” Andrews familiar voice echoed in her head.46
“Yeah, I’ll tell ya later!” to Tiffany, “Lets go.”47
“Yeah.” She nodded and walked with her sister to the backyard, being watched by an impatient Andrew.48

Ooh, this was a really good opening of a story! I can only imagine where it goes from here...does she go inside Andrew's thoughts and find something she doesn't want to know?
You described the "magic", if you could call it that, really well. Nice job. -
