When We Met: Losing Her

Christian knew something was wrong about a week into their relationship. The fire seemed to burn out of Cat's eyes right in front of him, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't ever make her truly happy. 1

Cat still smiled, but there was something hiding behind those miraculous eyes, and he wanted to know what it was. It was like she was lying to him, and he pushed her to be closer to him so that he could learn the secret she kept hidden so well. Before long, he had changed Cat so completely that he barely recognized the girl who slept beside him every night.2

The only signs that she was the same girl he fell in love with were physical. Her hair was still blond and curly, her eyes the same shade of blue, her body still silky soft, but she was different now. He knew he was wrong to push her to be so close to him so fast, but by the time that he tried to fix his mistake, they were in over their heads. 3

He had made Cat so reliant on him that she barely had a thought of her own, and he in turn made all the decisions. She was so afraid of losing him that she became lost in him. He knew he had to break up with her, but he needed time to figure out a way to do it in a way that wouldn't completely crush her. So he didn't talk to her for almost 2 days. When he knew what he was going to say, he called her and asked her to come over to his house for a while because he wanted to talk to her. 4

It hurt him to hear how happy she sounded when he said her name. She started crying, telling him that she was worried about him and that she thought something terrible had happened to him. Then she stared into his eyes, and saw exactly what she had been afraid of. 5

He quickly tried to explain that it was him, he was screwing up in school because he couldn't get her out of his head, but she didn't understand it. He felt worse than ever, and the more he tried to ease her mind, the more upset she got. 6

After a few minutes, he couldn't stand it, and he grabbed her. He hugged her to his chest, feeling her warm tears hit his shirt. He suddenly wished he'd never said any of it, because it was the last time he was ever going to hold her, or be near her. He missed her already.7

She wiped her tears, and lit a cigarette for him, the lit one for herself. When she was finished, she smiled the saddest smile he'd ever seen. He knew then, that this was the biggest mistake he had ever made in his entire life.8
