Stay Awake (part 2)

Doug stood up slowly; he had to hold onto the night stand to get a steady balance. The knees on his jeans were now soaked in damp blood. He felt as if he was moving in slow motion. He pulled the cover down to see where Sarah was bleeding from, and he gasped in horror. He saw a large steak knife sticking out of her stomach. It had a black, rough textured handle and a large silver blade, all of witch was now deep in Sara’s abdomen. He walked out of the bedroom to the front door to get a sense of what might have happened. Most people would have called the police in panic and shock. The police would come and bring a bunch of Crime Scene Investigators here, along with a detective and several patrol cares, and an ambulance.  1

But Doug was a detective. 10 years ago he used to work for the Riverside Metropolitan Police in Trenton California. Now he works as a retired officer for the Riverside Security Patrol Board of Trenton CA. Doug hypnotically searched the apartment, looking for signs that he should have noticed late last night. He started from the front door of the apartment and saw that the chain from the lock was broken. It was definitely a forced entry. He felt like he did 10 years ago, in the middle of a new case. This time it was personal, it was his Sarah! His own wife, his only family. Ask any detective, and they will tell you that it is always a different case when it’s your own family that’s being investigated. Doug was in a trance this time. Walking the room the way he used to, things should have been obvious as soon as he entered the room; he use to be able to smell a homicide like a blood hound. He was quite rusty. He walked from the front of the apartment down the hall, then into the kitchen. He looked around and like a punch in the face it hit him. The wooden block where the knives were neatly kept, he saw that the largest one was missing. 2
