Evil's Seed1
Where ever you find Evil you will definitely find sin. It appears, as if it comes out of no where, lurking around for unsuspecting souls. It remains hidden in the darkened heart until it is stirred awake. Then it spins its web to create confusion and lies into its victim's mind. It blasts itself out of the shadows, without warning, to stand before you in all its gruesome glory. Such a horrid monstrosity with its green skin hanging from its bones. Its fangs gleam of the blood of his last victim, its eyes hold a fiery yellow glow, its sharp claws are like razors, and an evil laugh escapes from within the depths of this demon. Such an eerie sound that seems to consume all the world around you.2
Joe McCalahan lived a pretty average life. Married with two kids, living an upper middle class life as the manager of a bank, he really couldn't have asked for more. He owned a beautiful home on a sprawling green meadow of land. The woods behind his home made the perfect back drop to his gorgeous life. He loved his life, he was happy almost all of the time, he loved his family and was an honest man. But, for some reason, strange things started to happen to Joe.3
It all began one evening while he was closing out the banks business for the day. Sprawled before him on his desk were the many files of the accounts that were opened that day for bank loans. Joe was looking over the files to make sure they were all in order. Signed in the proper places, social security numbers added and making sure that all the corresponding forms were attached. He actually really loved this part of his job because it gave him the opportunity to see all the people that passed through. The ones looking to buy new homes, cars, real estate etc. etc.4
Joe came across a file that would have usually warmed his heart. Two young adults, newly wed, just starting out and looking for their first home. Although, when he picked up the file to read it his fingers burned as if singed by fire. Even weirder yet; he heard something in the back of his head that screamed out, "Deny!" The Voice startled Joe, but he pondered on it a second before hearing The Voice again. " These people don't need this loan. Remember how hard it was for you to get your first loan? Why should they be any different?" The Voice roared with such conviction. For some reason this made sense to Joe so he grabbed the stamp, slammed it down so hard on the file that the ink splattered out the word denied. He felt satisfied after words.5
More and more Joe found himself denying perfectly good loans and when questioned he just lied and said the credit didn't go through. He began hearing this voice in his head more and more pointing out where others were getting breaks in life where he hadn't been so lucky. It reminded him of all the blood, sweat and tears he had to relinquish to get to where he was at. A bitter, angry Joe started to emerge. He could no longer tell where he began and The Voice ended. Worse yet The Voice kept demanding more and more from him.6
Frequently, Joe found himself in the bank vault picking up piles of cash and letting them flip between his fingers. He liked the feel of the money, the sensation that ran through his own being. Suddenly, he found himself almost in love with the money and he didn't want to depart from it. One day, he heard the voice again, as he was gently caressing a stack of the money. There had to be at least a hundred thousand dollars in that stack. The Voice echoed, "go ahead, Joe, take it. You deserve it. You work yourself to death for this bank; they owe you something." Without even thinking Joe stuck the money in his pocket then looked all around him as if he was searching for someone to be there to catch him. Even though that was impossible there wasn't anyone else in the bank. 7
This became a habit for him. Joe was never satisfied and hungered to feel the money fill his pockets. He lived on the rush of taking the money and then spending it on whatever he wanted. He bought a brand new sports cars, expensive suits, diamonds for his wife, and whatever his kids wanted. His wife was suspicious, but Joe just told her he had gotten a promotion to Bank President. He had an excuse for everything. Only stealing the cash didn't stop there. He went on to stealing from the safe deposit boxes, selling the jewelry, using the credit cards to gain access to even more money or even just pillaging through the contents of a box.8
All of this consumed his life so much it was all he thought about and all he dreamt about at night; how to get more money and possessions. The Voice in his head almost became like a friend to him; guiding him to different ways to get more. The only thing Joe didn't think about was getting caught. He really didn't think much beyond gaining however much that he could. However, he never saw that regardless of how much he took he never felt full.9
It was late one evening when Joe and his wife were curled up on the couch engrossed in a movie when this realization became truth. First Joe was startled by the flashing lights drawing closer to his house, as police cars were coming down the long dirt drive. Then the sirens screeched in his ears. " Joe what's going on?" his wife jumped up from the couch to rush over to the window. She parted the drapes and sure enough police cars started to swarm the house. Joe's heart froze when he heard The Voice again, "Run Joe, run! Go get your gun and run to the back woods and hide." 10
Immediately, Joe got up and ran for the stairs leading up to the master bedroom. He took them two at a time knowing he only had a matter of minutes before his wife opened the door. He could still hear her screaming from below. He ran into his room, thrust open the top drawer and fumbled with the contents until he found his gun taped to the top of the dresser. He dashed back out of his room and for a brief second saw his children emerge from their rooms," No time to say Good-bye," Joe thought to himself, flying back down the stairs, through the house and to the back door. He threw open the door and found he had made it in time so he started running towards the woods.11
Joe did not stop until he reached the entrance to the woods and he ducked inside to hide behind a tree. When he looked back up towards his house he saw many police officers following the glow of their flash lights. He stood up to run again, but when he did a tree branch snapped beneath his foot. The large snap drew the police officer's attention to the woods and Joe started running again. He could hear the search dog's barking on his heels and he ran even faster finding it hard to find his way through the woods as darkness was falling.12
Joe kept screaming for the voice, " What do I do? What do I do?" when suddenly he felt a thud against his back and he hit the ground hard. One of the police dogs had gained speed and caught up with him. " Shoot him!" JOe finally heard The Voice speak. So he turned, pointed the gun at the dog and shot him. The dog fell on top of him his blood spilling out onto Joe's silk shirt. Even at this time Joe thought to himself, 13
"Damn, this shirt was expensive." He slid himself out from underneath the dog, but he barely got to his knees when he heard an unfamiliar voice. 14
" Freeze or I'll shoot!" The words seemed to reverberate off all the surrounding trees. Joe continued to his feet and started to turn around. " Stop right there and throw your weapon to the ground," the officer spoke again. 15
"What should I do?" Joe spoke out loud to this voice, looking around as if he expected someone to appear. 16
"Shoot him and run!" The Voice almost seemed to be laughing as it spoke. So, Joe continued to turn and he raised his gun. Before he could get his finger on the trigger he heard the loud shot of a gun going off, he could even smell the gun powder. Only, he wasn't sure if it was his gun or the officer's until he felt a sharp pain rip through his chest before he fell to the ground. The last thing he saw was the glare of the officer's flash light. 17
Joe felt himself falling and falling, as if he were falling to no where until finally he hit the ground and found there were flames all around him. "Where am I?" he asked, as the heat intensified. Suddenly, the face of a monster with green skin falling off it's skull burst through the flames. The flames almost seemed to be flickering in his eyes and it gleamed off his fangs and razor sharp claws.18
" Hello, Joe! It's me, The Voice, Welcome to Hell!" A hideous laugh escaped this demon that didn't seem as if it would ever end. Then a scene played before him. His wife dressed all in black, a black veil covered her face and his son and daughter stood one on each side of her. His wife was sobbing out some words to a person who stood before her, only Joe could not see who this person was, " I don't know what happened to Joe. He was always such an honest man. I don't know what made him so gluttonous to the material things in life. I thouhgt he was satisfied in our life together." All Joe could do was fall to the ground and cry. 19
Author notes
I used gluttony in the sense of taking in too much of something. I hope that is OK.

Thank-you for your advice. I hope it's not too late. I did edit this story for grammatical errors. I have read and re-read it so hopefully I got them all.

There were a few typos here, however I am sure you will find them without my pointing them out..I make enough of my own
Either way, Great job! And, I must admit, anytime I've thought of gluttony..it was always in the context with/of food. -
Let's start off with the not so fun part, lol. There were a lot of grammatical errors in here, like "its" and "it's" being used in the wrong way. You gotta be careful with your apostrophes hun. This was a nice way to show that gluttony doesn't just apply to food, I don't think a lot of people know that. Thanks for entering the contest!

I had read this earlier in the day and was not able to stay and comment. It was just as good in the second reading tonight. Excellent build up to a haunting ending. Tension kept my interest and a good message is at the core.
