Hands raking calloused fingers through thinning hair. It’s still curly and coarse. He inherited his hair from the long Irish line of his mother. She had long tendrils of curly brown hair. His father said he fell in love with her hair first when she knelt in the garden with the sun shining like a veil over her. His father, the master story teller, repeated the same family stories his father told him around the hearth.1
His fingers are calloused from hard work. Chopping wood, sanding arms and legs of handcrafted furniture, and stroking the finished masterpieces with varnish gathered the callouses just where they are needed. 2
Sawdust launched from his hair like tiny rockets intent on a mission. He was thinking and the raking was done absentmindedly. He’d shaved his beard; he usually rubbed it instead. So intent was his gaze he didn’t even see me enter the workshop. 3
Drinking in the picture he made with the sun splintering through the wall planks and haphazardly covered windows. He is wearing my favorite flannel shirt. Usually I steal his clothes but he likes my flannel as much I do. It’s way too big on me but fits him perfectly with his T-shirt peeking out from under loose buttons. 4
“Want some help?”5
He grunted. 6
That usually means no. 7
I sat down at my bench and began to work. 8
I make the details. I burn delicate roses or vines into the wood. I design the patterns and impress them into the furniture. 9
Turning on the wood burner and the heater, I give him another wanting look; but he’s still deep in thought. He's been thinking for way too long.10
Author notes
what can I say? I love flannel especially if there's a curly headed man in it.

Beautiful
I agree with Grossmutti's comment, you have captured the thoughts and views of another being, and their thoughts of their man. I also hope this has another part to it, im sure your on to something fantastic here. They have created a beautiful, sensual opening to a deep and meaningful story. Go with it, Your very talented. -
Exquisite
This is a glorious peek into another's life. You are an extremely gifted storyteller. I hope that this is an installment in a longer work, because I'd love to see where these two take me. It is all so descriptive and polished to perfection. If you can tell a story like this about a flannel shirt(I love flannel, myself) I can't even begin to imagine what you can do with a more ah....exciting subject
Must bookmark this one right away.
