Pangs of Loss on Every Level

Mournful yelping of pain shattered my evening television watching.1

I considered for a second, jumped into my shoes, grabbed my jacket and down the stairs I ran.  Without a thought to a possible wounded animal, I ran outside.  Relieved to hear Joey barking, I knew it wasn't him yelping.  2

It's amazing how attached I am to him even now that he's outside.  I miss him being with me in the evenings.3

Smelling his bad breath and pushing his nose in my face, I see what he's so excited about.  A beagle or a hound of some sort was moaning and yelping in the side yard.  I reassure Joey and go to see what's wrong with her.  She was very heavy with milk, maybe she's had two or three pups.  I suppose she's missing one of them as she's sniffing the ground.  Maybe they died or were taken prematurely.  Some mothers search endlessly, tirelessly even when they watched them being taken away.  With my flashlight I follow her and look withe very step but find nothing.4

It's been 6 hours since I first heard her yelping so sorrowfully.  I heard her again and hear Joey answering her with his excited barking.  I don't know if he understands her pain but I think he's trying.  She must be exhausted.  I don't know what to do.5

It was true. I heard her yelping into the night. She was searching for something and couldn't find it. The next morning there was no sign of her. I still wonder what happened to her.

I liked your little story. Is it true? If it is, then, could you help this poor mama doggie? I hope she's ok now. I hate to see any animal in pain. I have 3 cats, a chihuahua and a gecko, and I never like to see any of them in pain. I know that she thanked you in her own way for helping her.
