Memoirs of a Witch

Memoirs of a Witch1

by Victor R. Solt2

Paris, two in the morning, 3

heading into three, and my crotch! 4

Lord how it aches as I turn, 5

bony knees knocked together, 6

pulling that stick to the right--7

I'm headed for the Hinterland--8

through clammy clouds 9

on this moonless night.10

Valleys meet gorges 11

before vaulting 12

in mountainous splendor 13

as I glide with a cackle 14

toward the thicketed forest of dark, 15

wherein lies my abode, 16

just fairly centre of the leafy mass, 17

where a dull glen opens 18

to the morning pitch, 19

allowing my descent.20

Sickly sweet, 21

the odour assaults my 22

crooked probosis--23

a bait, I am the master--24

for wayward sojourners, 25

and currently, 26

lost children.  27

They merely sniffle and choke now, 28

bound and encaged as they are, 29

swinging with my cauldrens 30

above the mantle 31

where smolders 32

last evening's pyre.33

Still laden with youthful lard they be; 34

I cannot contain my longings 35

and so press them, 36

with one long twisted nail, 37

first in the belly, 38

then the cheek, 39

the thigh, 40

and squeal we all 41

(they in fright, I with delight!), 42

as Narder, the black feline one, 43

hisses at my careless boots 44

(having disturbed his slumber 45

with their joyous plodding).46

To the coal bin with frantic ebreo; 47

I shovel the dark matter48

to stoke the tame pyre 49

with heated abandon!  50

The cooking must begin 51

after I baste the dear quarry 52

in a vat of broth 53

(vinegar and sloth); 54

the juice is now a-boil, 55

so I lower each in!56

I batter their faces of cherub 57

that squeal 58

with an iron 59

propped up 'gainst the dusky red brick, 60

with a crack 61

tender skulls are encouraged 62

to leak, 63

and to stop their queer bodies 64

from the cauldron to leap!  65

Blood races boiling into each face, 66

a-droop on the necks 67

now all limp, 68

the heads bob on the boils 69

that release sweet aromas 70

in each bubble popped, 71

my mouth is a-drooling 72

to be satisfied!73

I shan't say the more, 74

for my sup is nigh ready--75

and I thinks I hear 76

soft pattering feet down my path-- 77

With a peek from my sugar cane window 78

I spy a boy and a girl, 79

enchanted with hopes 80

that  the sweetly dressed 81

hostel 82

before them 83

will quell and 84

alieve the fears 85

they have gathered up this day--86

I must greet them, 87

before they run away!88

Narder leaps as I move 89

with lithe speed to the door, 90

a false smile with teeth 91

rotten over the years, 92

and a kind voice 93

(though raspy), 94

I bid them come in.  95

I promise shelter and warmth, 96

not the least a hot meal! 97

They are willing, these sheep! 98

To the slaughter I lead99

So willingly follow100

They'll soon take the place101

Of ingredients now simmering102

Gently serene103

A lull-a-bye soup104

Fit For a Queen!105

    Dear Victor,

    Most imaginative and horrifically descriptive!
Your graphic imagery is almost gothic in its unsparing detail. Do you tear wings off flies? (sic)
I like the touch with the iron bar - have felt the urge once or twice myself (but managed to control it).
Very well done!!! Applause and thanks for not entering in a contest (as I don't comment on contest entries.)
Best wishes and regards, Hugh Wyles.

This is really, really good. Your imagery is fantastic! I loved the beginning. I was drawn in with goosebumps, then slowly realized the gist of the story. You could have even gone another direction with this story and made it something new. It really draws the reader in. Excellent!
