Midnight Musing From Porch Swing

The air has a bite to it, as I sit, hot chocolate in hand - drinking in the many scents of the night. Sounds surround me on all sides; birds calling, the wind rustling through the naked, winter trees that seem to cocoon me.1

I feel safe here, even though I am alone with my thoughts; My lover sleeping nearby - his soft snores adding to the carcophony of the moment. Sleep is evading me tonight - tangled dreams of fictional horrors, woke me. And as I look out into the darkness, the ghost of the nightmare causes my heart to hammer in my chest. I know I am alone, but the trees hold their own court around me - hiding the unseen, the un-realised horrors of my imagination.2

Taking a sip of the dark, hot liquid - I hug the cup with my hands, allowing the heat to penetrate. I shiver as the cold finally invades my thin pyjamas - I must be mad, sitting out here alone in the middle of a pitch black night - with only my thoughts for company.3

The light seems to change, as the sun starts it's ascent into the still starfilled sky. The darkness becomes more detailed, as the dawn illumination lights up the once unseen. I yawn - taking a deep breath into my lungs.4

How can it be that the air smells so much sweeter just before dawn?5

Getting to my feet, I retreat back inside to the heat of my lovers waiting arms - burying my cold nose into his shoulder. My eyes watching through the window behind, as the sun rises - bringing with it a new and beautiful day.6
