Chapter 2:6

Matt was suddenly jerked back into reality when he heard a deafening screech. He noticed that he had is eyes closed and then realized where he was.7

Matt could see the blue car nearing him and he could see the driver staring at him, eyes wide open. The driver had a look of horror in his eyes as he fumbled with his foots’ placement on the stop pedal. The car was speeding towards Matt, who had been standing in the middle of the road as he had his flashback.8

Matt was too stunned to move. His feet felt like they were glued to the road. He could only just stare and watch as the car came closer and closer to him.9

It all happened in slow motion. The driver pressed hard into the back of his seat and jammed his foot as far down on the stop pedal as it could possibly go. The car slowed down considerably, and the driver kept his hand pressed hard on the horn.10

It was too late for either of them to do anything to stop or even stall the inevitable.11

All of a sudden Matt stared into the eyes of the driver. He looked down and saw the hood of the car move into him, and he blacked out as he went headfirst through the windshield. All Matt could see was a mixture of black and red, but he thought nothing of it. He was struggling for breath and gasping every second, every attempt at air almost always unsuccessful. He could hear screams, but blood was covering his ears. He could feel a drop of warmth slide down his cheek, which he presumed was a tear, and he started having convulsions.12

Matt was shaking all over the place. His head had gone through the windshield, but his lower body had been twisted over the roof, which left half of his body stuck on the roof of the car while the rest of him was dangling facing down, head on the broken windshield’s remaining parts, which were broken off the car and in his forehead.13

Matt felt something creep up his throat, and the next thing he knew he was throwing up. The throw up had a similar taste to blood, and he felt weary and tired and he tried opening his eyes, but instead he felt a sharp pain in his forehead where the glass was stuck. Fighting the pain as to not pass out, he tried to feel his arms, which were caked in blood and small chips of glass.14

Suddenly, Matt had the thought, there is no hope. I am gonna die. He slowly gave in to the terrifying sensation that Matt had once so wanted to feel.15

**********16

Matt woke up and all he saw was light. He knew it couldn’t be heaven because he felt a throbbing pain in his left temple. He knew that it also couldn’t be hell because he felt really cold.17

Matt tried to move any part of his body, but the felt like they were glued to some kind of surface. Matt suddenly felt a surge of energy and he tried to move his finger, but in the process lost that surge of energy. He felt weary but he was fighting the sleep that was nagging his whole body, and finally, he let sleep overwhelm him.18

**********19

Matt woke once more, this time to voices that seemed familiar, yet Matt couldn’t quite place them. He couldn’t see anything again either, and everything was a bright fluorescent white.20

“Matt, it‘s us… it‘s me… you‘re mom.” Matt’s mom said sniffling, “We were finally allowed to come and see you. The doctor‘s said that you’re in a coma. The doctor, Mr. Andrew‘s, said that you can hear us, but you just can‘t reply or even move.”21

Another sniffle escaped her mouth and Matt’s father said, “Mr. Andrew says that… that you might not wake up. He says that… that coma‘s are very complicated but they are basically an extreme state of unconsciousness, and… well, he said that you might…” His father paused, most likely letting the truth finally sink in to himself, “Die.”22

His mother bursts into tears and his father hugs her and they walk out into the hallway, both crying, choking back tears simultaneously.23

Matt heard all of it and realized that they had left the room. Again, he felt a surge of energy, but this time did not try to move his finger, nor any other part of his body. He knew that before long  he would feel so tired that he would just want to fall into sleep. He didn’t fight the sleep this time, but let it overcome him. He felt a surge, this time not energy, but joy. He felt warm and joyful, almost like he was screaming for joy inside of his body.24

Everything turned black.25

**********26

Nothing happened the next four month’s. Matt would come in and out of sleep, but he never opened his eyes, moved his body, or exited his unconscious state. His parents would come in and give him encouragement to live on, to fight as hard as he could. Matt rarely heard their words of encouragement, and when he did, he didn’t focus on what they were saying, but he focused on placing the voices he was hearing. They sounded so familiar, but he couldn’t recall where he had heard the voices.27

Sometimes he would hear an unfamiliar voice, and it would be soothing and peaceful, and once even lulled him into the deepened unconscious state of blackness. 28

The doctor’s were getting a normal heart beat, and nothing was irregular or failing. It was exactly as if Matt was simply sleeping.29

**********30

It happened when Matt’s parents weren’t there. The first time Matt moved in 7 months. A young inexperienced nurse was changing the sheets and made sure that everything was functioning as it should.31

Suddenly, the nurse shouted at the top of her lungs, “He moved! He moved! Mr. Andrew, Mr. Andrew! Quick!”32

Mr. Andrew was on his break, but he sprinted hurriedly towards the young man who was in the coma’s room.33

“Look at his finger, look!” the nurse exclaimed.34

The finger was twitching uncontrollably, and all of the monitor’s were up and running correctly. The doctor called out into the hallway, “Call this young man‘s parents! Tell them that we have seen movement. Tell them to come quickly, please.” Dr. Andrew said, thanking the woman who replied and said that she would call them.35

Meanwhile, in Matt’s head, he suddenly had the urge to survive. He felt incredible strength, as if he could move the world’s tallest building and not even break a sweat. He was trying each of his finger’s to see if he could move them. He tried his pinky, and it barely lifted off of the sheets, but it moved. He tried his other fingers, but found that they were too heavy. He stuck to trying to move his pinky finger, and was successful numerous times.36

Suddenly, he felt a warm touch on his arm, something that he hadn’t felt in what felt like a lifetime. He opened his eyes and kept them open for a split second, and saw a nurse smiling at him. His eyes became deadweight, and he could no longer keep them open.37

Matt’s parents appeared at the door just in time to see his son move his middle finger up into the air.38

“That‘s my son!” Matt’s father said.39

Matt heard his father’s voice.40

Matt wanted to jump up in joy, or clap his hands. He had finally recognized the voice. It was his father’s. He tried to smile, but he only lifted his right cheek some invisible distance.41
