To The Extreme

Zoë: Ahh!! What the heck are you doing?! Get it off, get it off!1

Jack: What are you talking about? There’s nothing on you! I didn’t do anything! 2

Zoë: The Aloe Vera! Take it off! It’s burning! I feel like my skin is burning! 3

Jack: I thought you wanted me to put it on! That’s what Aloe Vera is for isn’t it? To get rid of sunburn.4

Zoë: I guess I’m allergic, take it off! God dammit, it hurts so bad!5

Jack: Come on, let’s get you into the water. The ocean will wipe all of that stuff off. Come on, let’s go!6

Zoë: I’m coming! (just into the water)7

Jack: (vigorously uses the ocean water to rub the green gook off of Zoë’s back) There  you go. You okay?8

Zoe: Yeah, thanks. Sorry about that. I had no idea that was going to happen. I mean, I bet you didn’t expect that to happen. A girl on the beach just asks you to put some stuff on her back to get rid of a sunburn…and then you have to drag her into the ocean to make it stop burning…It’s rather ironic actually. Sorry about that.9

Jack: It’s no problem. My girlfriend is allergic to a lot of things too. I’m used to it.10

Zoë: Oh, wow. Where is she right now? 11

Jack: Well, she’s with her girlfriend in Minnesota helping her to plan a wedding. She insists that I go on a vacation and not get caught up in all that girl stuff. That’s what she said anyway. I wouldn’t have minded, but she wouldn’t let me stay.12

Zoë: (laughs) Yeah. She probably just didn‘t want you to get too bored.13

Jack: Yeah, I wouldn’t have minded going with. But I don’t think I would have helped out much. Not unless it’s my own wedding. (Both are silent for a moment) Well, I think I’m going to go surfing or something. Wanna come? (starts walking) 14

Zoë: (screams) Hey wait up! You should see my surfing skills. 15

Jack: Yeah? You think so? I bet I’m better. I’m a professional snowboarder in Minnesota. And those skills do help just a little bit when surfing. (sticks out his hand) My name is Jack Daniels. And yours? 16

Zoë: I’m Zoë Zimmerman. (she ignores his attempted handshake and grabs two surfboards and shoves one hard at Jack’s chest) 17

Jack: Ugh… A little violent aren’t we? (chuckles and darts to the water) 18

Zoë: (catches up with Jack and catches a wave to show off and sees that Jack is right next to her on the wave) Wow, you’re pretty good. Bet ya can’t keep up with me, though. 19

Jack: Don’t worry about me. I got this under control! (slips and wipes out) 20

Zoë: Jack! (panics and dives off her board into the water after Jack) Hold on, I’ll get you. Just hold on! 21

Jack: (pops up out of the water and laughs) Haha. I totally got you. I so had you going. 22

Zoë: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay you got me, big shot. So what do we do now since you basically killed yourself on that last fall. (chuckles) 23

Jack: I picked surfing. You pick the next activity. Wait a second…who did you come to Hawaii with? You’re on vacation right? Unless you live here... Well, are you on vaca? Did you come with anyone else? Can you still hang out or do you have someplace to be? I don’t want to keep you away from something you should be doing.24

Zoë: Whoa…calm down Speedy Gonzalez. To answer your question, yes, I’m on vacation. Normally, I’m in Georgia skating. 25

Jack: What kind of skating? Ice-skating? Roller-skating? 26

Zoë: Yeah…I’m a pretty little princess on ice skates. Wouldn’t I look cute in a skirt? Actually, I came with my sister. She’s right over there in the water. She’s training to be a pro skateboarder, just like her big sis. 27

Jack: Oh…(jaw drops) 28

Zoë: I snowboard, too. Just like you, Jack.29

Jack: (continues to stare at Zoë’s sister) Wow… that’s amazing. 30

Zoë: I know, it‘s way rad. We definitely have a lot in common. So where are we gonna do next? Or are we gonna stand on this beach all day?31

Jack: How old is your sister? 32

Zoë: Younger than me. Haha, I’m just goofin’ with ya. She’s 19. She’ll be 20 in June. How about we go roller-skating?33

Jack: What kind of stuff does she like to do? 34

Zoë: We could go skating if you want. With a board, not blades. There’s this cool place I found on the way here. It’s huge! Tons of ramps, and some street if Mr. Daniels can’t handle the vert.35

Jack: (sees Zoë’s sister walking away) Hey…where is she going?36

Zoë: Actually, there’s a lot of people there right now, so we could go somewhere else first and then go to the skate park later on tonight. What do you think? 37

Jack: Does your sister have a boyfriend? 38

Zoë: I don’t know, ask her. The last time I checked she was single but I could be wrong.39

Jack: Do you think she would want to hang out with us? 40

Zoë: I’m sure. Actually, never mind. I remember her telling me that she has some stuff to work on for school on her laptop, so I doubt she‘d be able to join us, even if she wanted to. 41

Jack: That’s cool. So…what do you want to do today, you still haven’t told me. 42

Zoë: Ugh. Were you not listening at all?43

Jack: Eh…honestly? Not really…your sister…she’s….she’s just got this glow about her...44

Zoë: You’re kidding me. I thought you said you had a girlfriend.45

Jack: Look at the way she’s smiling. She looks so happy. Does she always smile like that?46

Zoë: You’re crushin’ on my sister? You’re crushin’ on my sister!47

Jack: What’s her name?48

Zoë: Why? You can’t have her.49

Jack: I’m not trying to get with her or anything. She just seems like a lot of fun. I’d like to get to know her. Just like I’m getting to know you.50

Zoë: Yeah, okay. How old are you anyway? 24? 25? My sister’s 19, buddy.51

Jack: Chill out! I have a girlfriend; I’m not trying to get with your sister, okay? And by the way I’m 21. And why would you care, anyway. I just met you. Why are you concerned with my personal affairs?52

Zoë: (starts raising her voice, very annoyed) Well it would sort of cross the boundary into my personal affairs if you started cheating on your girlfriend with my sister don’t you think?53

Jack: (yelling) I’m not cheating on my girlfriend with your sister, okay? I haven’t even talked to her… sheesh.54

Zoë: I can’t believe you would even think of doing something like that! How could you? Cheating? And even if you weren’t cheating, you still had improper thoughts about another woman. (declares in an announcer voice) And the award for the worst boyfriend goes to…Jack Daniels!55

Jack: Can it, will you?! Things weren’t going so hot between me and my girlfriend, okay? We broke up before I even came here. I came here to clear my head, to get away.56

Zoë: So you lied to me? Was that because you didn’t want me to think that you were available? And then you start staring at my sister like she’s grade A top choice meat? That’s real great. Your plan fell through just a little bit. You’re a real gentleman. I thought you were better than that.57

Jack: You just met me! How would you know what I’m like? I don’t like your sister and I don‘t look at her like she‘s a slab of meat okay. I thought she was cute, yes, but mainly what caught my eye was the fact that she was happy and seemed fun. She’s got something my ex is sorely lacking: a personality. God, at this point any woman has more personality than the woman I was with. And you apparently have twice the amount of personality than she does! And by the way I wasn’t trying to keep you away, if that’s what you’re thinking. Not you specifically anyway. For one, it was a force of habit to say that she’s my girlfriend. And two, I didn’t want any girl thinking that I was ready to step up to the play again just yet. I just broke up with a girl, what do you want from me?58

Zoë: Love is so partial, it’s completely unfair. You had a girlfriend who cared about you, and you just threw that away. My sister has all these guys swooning over her. But when am I gonna ever have a shot at romance, huh? Answer me that, Mr. Jack Daniels: ungrateful boyfriend and cradle robber.59

Jack: I’m not a jerk, I’m a good guy. I don’t care what you say. You don’t know me, and you’ve completely misunderstood my every comment and action.60

Zoë: How could I have misunderstood you? You told me you had a girlfriend, but then you kept leading me on and I thought you might have felt some feelings for me at least, or something like that but then you start staring at my sister. You just go from girl to girl to girl, don’t you? Don’t you?61

Jack: Actually, yeah I have. Because I can never find the right one. I keep trying to find her but she’s never where I’m looking! I can’t take it anymore!62

Zoë: You have no idea what it’s like being alone.63

Jack: You just keep rambling, and we’re not even on the same topic anymore! Just listen okay! (lowers his voice, takes a deep breath and tries to calm down) I may as well be alone. I had to break up with my girlfriend, and even while we were dating, things just weren’t working out and I felt alone even if I was attached to someone. I don’t know what to do about my social life, my personal life, my romantic life.64

Zoë: Me either.65

Jack: Oh. So…you thought I was sweet for you?66

Zoë: Well, I mean I figured it was kind of impossible. You were taken. But it was wishful thinking, I guess.67

Jack: Oh. I really don’t like your sister like that you know. I don’t even know her. She just seemed very happy, and confident. Like she knew how to have a good time and have an actual conversation, you know? I’m looking for someone you could just hang around with all day and spend time in the sun, doing things we like to do and just talk and have a good time. Fun. That’s what I’m definitely looking for in a girl. But I don’t know. Do you know what I mean?68

Zoë: I get it. So what do you want to do? Are we both just going to go our separate ways or…can we still spend time together?69

Jack: I’m sorry I yelled, I’m just very frustrated, and I didn’t mean to take it out on you. I came to Hawaii to get away from everything. And now… I’m just causing new problems for myself. I mean…fighting with a cute girl on the beach…what is that?70

Zoë: Cute? I mean…yeah. I’m sorry too. I just…get really sensitive, and I…I dunno. I was stupid in thinking that…never mind. Let’s go take a walk or something. To get to know each other better.71

Jack: Yes, we definitely should do that. (smiles)72

Zoë: Exactly. (blushes slightly)73

Jack: And then we can…(stares into Zoë’s eyes, moves closer to her and kisses her)74

Zoë: Do that?75

Jack: Wow. I don’t know what to say. How did that happen? I mean we spent the whole day together, and I was having such a great time with you.76

Zoë: But that fight.77

Jack: And then we started to kiss…?78

Zoë: So…wow. What do we do now?79

Jack: This. (kisses Zoë again) Wow. It’s amazing how one person can teach you everything about yourself. I didn‘t know what to do before or what I was thinking, but fighting with you and trying to explain myself, now I understand what‘s going on in my head. (pauses) You know, you were right…I did like you earlier today.80

Zoë: Did?81

Jack: Do. I just…thought it was wrong to be thinking about someone else; I tried to ignore it. But then I couldn’t help it and it was apparently noticeable when I let myself look at and admire your sister…I screwed that one up.82

Zoë: You didn’t screw up. I mean, yeah you couldn’t help it. I know what you mean. So…are you completely crushed about your ex that you can’t accept a new girl in your life?83

Jack: Zoë, I was over with that relationship three months ago. I mean, I didn’t break up with her until a week ago, but it was over in my heart long ago. I’m ready for you. (smiles and takes Zoë in his arms)84

Zoë: You’re the one I’ve been waiting for.85

Jack: Right back at you. (kisses Zoë) 86
