One Last Tomorrow

the cemetery was empty except for a tall dark haired boy. sean baker stood with his hands in his pockets and his eyes locked on the one gravestone he hoped never to see. krissy evans lay beneath that dirt. he loved her more than life itself. she slit her wrists two nights before and no one saw it coming.1

krissy was beautiful. her hair was chin length and shiny, black. her eyes were a shade of blue that only existed in a crayola box, and they always seemed to consume all his fear. she had perfect white teeth that sean had only seen a few time. she never smiled for anyone else.2

a crisp wind cut through sean's bare arms and he knew the sun was about to set so he prepared himself to leave. "kris, i just wish i had one more chance. i'd save you." he whispered to the grave and then turned away to step into his jeep cherokee.3

as soon as he arrived home he showered and fell asleep. there was no point in eating anything, since he just felt sick. he dreamed of krissy and her pretty eyes, her smile, her voice. he wanted nothing but to be with her again. 4

when he stepped out of bed the next morning he heard a familiar voice. kris sat in the kitchen sipping orange juice. he wore the shorts he'd slept in the night before she died. was this his second chance, he wondered.5

"hi sean," krissy said cheerfully. well, it wasn't real cheer he knew now, she was planning her biggest mistake.6

"hey kris," sean put his arms tight around her. "what are you doing around here this early?"7

"just wanted to say hi."8

sean remembered every word she was going to say. it was like he was living a play and he was just an actor. he remembered what he said last time. he told her he was going to a basketball game with the 'guys.' last time krissy just nodded and kissed him goodbye.9

"you want to go somewhere?" sean asked.10

"where?"11

"wherever you want."12

krissy smiled, sort of, and laced her fingers with sean's and they walked out the door. she drove her chevy to the cemetery her grave was in. sean's stomach twisted when he looked where her grave had been. there was a stone there in the same place along with another one right beside it. neither of them payed attention to it and walked over to the only tree there. they sat down in silence for a few minutes.13

"kris, what are you thinking?" sean asked.14

"nothing."15

"you want to kill yourself." 16

she turned and looked at him in shock. "i already did."17

sean's head felt like it was spinning. krissy took his hand and led him to the two gravestones where hers had been. on the left read "krissy evans" on the right "sean baker."18

"what happened to me?" sean asked.19

"you were driving home three days after i died. a drunk driver hit you head on. you didn't feel anything i guess or you'd remember."20

"does that mean we're together forever now?"21

"i hope so"22
