In my fantasy, I am older. Not so old that I have a million things to do and can’t get done, not so old that I’ve forgotten how to enjoy life. Actually, I’m quite young to be so settled. So young that housework is still this new invigorating treat and my life is still a little like a game of house. In my fantasy, I haven’t gotten tired of it.2
I live in a little town house in a row of houses in London. I don’t know where in London, because I’ve never actually been. But it’s small and quaint, and much taller than it is wide. I have a little kitchen in which I totter around, making easy meals like spaghetti because I don’t know how to cook anything else. The walls are brick and the (very small) table is unstained wood. It is always sparkling clean because it hasn’t become a chore yet. There is a bowl of fruit in the middle of the table. Some of it is fake. Actually, most of it is fake. Like the lovely golden grapes that we bought when we bought the table, because they looked so nice in the display. I bought the bowl there too.3
The stairs that go from the narrow kitchen to the second floor are carpeted in deep crimson, not because it looked nice (even though it does), but because it was on sale. The wall beside the stairs is covered in pictures. They are all completely different. The first is a reproduction of Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe template. The second is of Stonehenge, because it still mystifies me. The third is a charcoal drawing of an old man. My great uncle did it. The last one would have been the great ship that hung in my kitchen when I was a child. It isn’t because I am deathly afraid of the ocean.4
My house is a lot like Hugh Grant’s little town house in Notting Hill, you know, the one with the blue door. Only I don’t live with a sad Scottish bloke, I live with a man. And it’s really him who I do all the housework for, and him who I make my sorry spaghetti dinner for. He’s the one who’s playing house with me.5
Author notes
