CHAPTER THREE1
LIFE WITH LESTAT2
After we left my house he took me to the docks on the Atlantic Ocean. We set sail to Europe the very next night. He was determined to show me everything that he could. We went to London and to Amsterdam. He even took me to Mile End. We saw and did everything that we could. He taught me everything that he could about my new powers. He taught me how to feed and not destroy myself doing so. 3
He told me everything I needed to know about our kind. And I was grateful for it all. But there was always something missing. But I was falling in love with Lestat. He was so kind to me, and he always knew how to make me happy. We walked through the many gardens and the allay ways. And we fed off the rich and the poor. We had our fun for a time. Everything that he showed me was so new and so great. I never once thought about my mortal life. 4
In 1912 Lestat took me to Egypt. I got to see the pyramids and the tombs of pharos long dead. It was amazing the way the moon would reflect off the top of the pyramids. By the time we made it back to the states I was a completely different person. I went back to my old house to look upon my old family. I noticed a grave marker by a tree. I walked over to it with Lestat by my side. The name on it belonged to my husband. It said he had died two years ago. I was surprised that grief didn’t consume me. I was truly a different person now. 5
I walked to the house and noticed my son in the kitchen cleaning up from the dinner they most likely had just finished. A young boy ran into the kitchen and clung to my son’s leg. And my daughter came in then and picked the little boy up. She spoke to the boy in a soft voice, “Don’t bother your uncle darling. He’s cleaning up.” She smiled at the boy and then walked out of the room. I stayed there for a moment and smiled some and then I turn towards Lestat. 6
“Let us leave Lestat. They are fine without me, and I have no desire to stay.” Lestat smiled at me and took my hand. We left that house and never again did I return. When we left that night I felt a new sense of freedom. I guess through those first year of my preternatural life I still felt pulled to my mortal family. And when I saw that they were fine with out me, I was able to let them go happily. 7
I few years later Lestat took me back to Europe. It was mid summer, and the night time air was crisp. We strolled through the Louvre looking at the paintings. Such beautiful paintings they were at that time. I could smell the paint that was on the canvases and the mold that some of the older ones had begun to accumulate. After we strolled through I begged him to take me some where else. 8
He took me in his arms and rose to the sky taking me to England. We walked through the Sessinghurst garden. At night it was beautiful. The way the moon would reflect off the water and the statues and the flowers. It was beautiful in my vampire eyes. We walked hand in hand through the garden. Till we reached a small pond where we stopped to sit. Lestat looked at me and I could tell that he wanted to say something, though I could not read his mind. I could still see it in his eyes that he wanted to talk to me about something very important. 9
“My dear sweet Elizabeth. I have something that needs to be said.” He turned towards me and took my hands in his. He looked deep into my eyes and said, “I must take my leave of you my dear.” He turned away and stood, then with the grace only Lestat has, he walked away. 10
I was left there in that garden by myself. I was left to ‘my darkest lesson’, as Lestat has said before. I left Europe and made my way back to the states, alone. 11
