Thoughts ran through her head, why was she here? Why did these men take her? She was lost in a world unknown to her, a world that nobody would be able to free her from. A world where joy and happiness were just dreams, she wasn't for certain if her husband was dead, she was scared. Her every thought was directed to that of Packard and her life back home.1
The lights turned on, this signified daytime. Time for the cruel ridicule of the guards scoffing at the chained slave; they would curse and spit on her, sometimes one of the men would try to get closer to her. She growled at them, trying to keep them away (which of course never worked). One of the man got so close to her that she forced to kiss him. He was not gentle at all. She tried to push him off, but she was too far from the wall to do so. The chains kept her from moving her arms too much. She was forced to wait until he had enough of her. 2
It had been several hours since the guards had left her in the room. She spent her time trying to break the chains by any means she could think of. She tried pulling on them, biting them (which made her mouth hurt immensely), and even broke down and starting yelling at them. None of these methods worked.3
The lights finally went out after what seemed like days. Sapphire was allowed only a few hours of sleep before the men were back in the room mocking and ridiculing her, luckily none of them tried to touch her today. They left a lot sooner than the day before; they must have gotten bored with her quicker. As soon as they had left she burst into tears because they had completely torn down her spirit. She wanted to go home, she wanted the comfort of Packard again. 4
One of the soldiers came back in a few hours later. Sapphire scrambled to the back of the room.5
"Don't worry, I don't want to hurt you," said a calm and soothing voice, "I just want to talk to you."6
Sapphire calmed down a bit, "Why? Why do you want to talk to me?"7
He looked her over a moment, "Well, I just wanted to talk because I have no real friends here. I'm kind of an outcast here. I needed someone who I could just talk to, that’s all."8
She was skeptical, she wasn't sure if she should trust him, "Well I guess we can talk, but I want to ask you something."9
"Okay, ask me." He said with that same calming voice.10
"Why are you guys holding me here? What did I do to you guys to make you keep me like this?"11
He looked at her; he couldn't answer these questions. He felt bad for her though; he didn't like how she was being treated. It was inhumane, leaving her in a gray concrete that was about 12 ft. wide by about 2 ft. long. It had one light hanging from the ceiling to give the room a little bit of light.12
"I'm sorry; I can't give you an answer to that. I wasn't with the party that raided you village. I just know that they are keeping you here for themselves." He looked at her, "I can try to get them to allow you to bathe, but I can't say that I'll be successful though."13
She knew that she needed a bath; she hoped that he was successful too. "Well I hope it works. I've been in here for awhile."14
"Well let’s talk about something else. What did you like to do before you were put in here?15
She had to think about this question. She had almost forgotten about these things. "Well," she finally said, "I used to teach the children of my village. What I really enjoyed the most was the time I spent with my husband, Packard. Other than that I really didn't do much."16
They heard someone coming down the hall. He got up and said his good-bye, and then he left the room. She was actually feeling better about herself. She knew that if they continued to talk, she wouldn't feel so bad.17
A man entered the room and he didn’t speak. He removed her from the chains and tied her hands behind her back, leading her out of the room and down the hallway out to what looked like a public washroom. He ripped her clothes off and pushed her under a cold-water shower saying only two words, “Wash yourself”18
Sapphire looked forward to every day that the man and her talked, he started sneaking her extra food for which she was very grateful. Sometimes they talked for hours, other days it seemed to be only for a few minutes. Then one day the thing Sapphire feared the most happened.19
The man, who had come to see her, had stopped coming. Sapphire waited day after day, and still he never came. She began to wonder what had happened to him, thoughts of what had happened to him raced through her mind. Maybe he ran from this place, or maybe he was found sneaking food. Her mind couldn’t even touch the possibility that he was dead, it just would not accept that thought that would kill her spirit. She didn’t want to feel that pain again, so she decided to keep her thoughts on him coming back to see her. Everyday brought the gloom of his demise closer to reality for her, and everyday brought her closer to death.20
Two weeks after his disappearance, the soldiers were becoming braver and kept getting closer to her. They began touching her, sometimes in ways that hurt her. Sometimes they would even use her. She could recall all of these events vividly. She could remember when one of them beat her; she still had the scars on her arms from him.21
She could also remember that one time when one of the soldiers decided to go further than anyone had before. He ripped the little cloth that covered her body off. She cowered in the back of the room, knowing she couldn’t escape him. He came towards her quickly; she knew his intentions. The grin on his face showed her that he was going to have her one way or another. He was right up against her; her back was up next to the wall. His hand slid over her breast and she snapped. His hand was starting to move down when Sapphire lashed out and bit him. He slapped her, “You stupid girl,” he grabbed her and threw her to the ground, “You’re going to regret that.”22
She knew if she didn’t do something, she was going to die. She jumped up and ran at him, she intentions were clear. She hoped she wouldn’t die, but she still thought she might. He wiped the blood from his hand on the side of the wall, his eyes filled with anger. Despite all this there was still a smile on his face. Sapphire knew this was a bad situation, her mind raced through thoughts of what they might do to her after fighting this man. She knew she had to fight him though.23
The teeth marks in the man’s hand were awfully large, she knew she had bitten him hard. He charged at her fast, and before she could do anything his hand was around her throat. She tried to fight him off, but he was squeezing her throat too hard. She swung at his face, but he blocked it with his free hand and slapped her again. “You never seem to learn, he grabbed her breast again as he pushed her up against the wall, “but you will, you will learn.”24
She was completely trapped; the wall kept her from moving backwards, and he kept her from moving forwards. Her mind started to go through her life’s memories as her consciousness slipped and her life seemed to fade away. Her thoughts were on Packard for those few moments, she thought about how she never had a chance to say good-bye. How she never could say ‘I love you’ one last time, then she passed out. 25
Sapphire awoke on the floor; the man was next to her in a pool of his own blood. She was a bit groggy at first, not realizing that the door was open. She looked at the man, and then at the door. Her mind began to start catching up with her body; she stood up and ran to the door. She didn’t get far, as her chains stopped less than halfway to the door.26
It had been several hours since her escape attempt; her mind raced through thoughts and desires of escaping her prison. She looked over at the body, and then she remembered guards have keys. She looked down at his belt and searched him for his keys. She was successful in finding them, but she couldn't find a key that fit her chains yet. She kept trying to make a key fit so she could pick the lock. Finally she heard the first lock click and the shackle fall to the floor. This encouraged her to work harder at the one around her other wrist, hoping that she could cause the other shackle to come off. Her mind raced through thoughts of freedom. She was going to get out of here finally. She would be able to return to her family, and live a normal life again.27
Sapphire ran through the door into a dark and empty hallway. She couldn’t see much of anything except a small amount of light pouring out from under a door. She ran to the door and opened it, stepping through to the other side. When she had closed the door two guards seized her and brought her down into a chair before strapping her arms and legs down to the chair, keeping her immobile. She struggled against the straps that were holding her down, but there was nothing she could do. She growled before screaming at the guards. She wanted freedom, and she almost had it. As she was yelling at the guards a young man in a white lab coat stepped out from behind one of the corners leading to another area of the room.28
"Hmm, An awfully young specimen again; Well she'll do fine anyway." Said the young man; his beady eyes were staring at her body. "We are always paying too much for our subjects."29
Sapphire stared at this man; He looked like a doctor, but what doctor operated like this? She had never heard of this kind of practice before. She struggled more before she decided to speak to the doctor.30
"What do you want with me? I don’t even know you!" Came the only words from her mouth in awhile.31
The doctor was amazed that she actually spoke to him; most of the new specimens won't talk so soon. "Well I guess there is no reason to lie to you, seeing as how you can't stop us anyway. You are going to be trained to be an obedient slave, and you will learn to love it."32
The two guards moved in and put a gag on her before they stuck a hood over her head. Every time she tried to murmur something she was shocked through electrodes attached to her body. She heard the three leaving and tried to object, but she was only shocked again. When they left the room. They turned the lights off.33
The doctor returned the next day and took the hood off of her. "Well my new specimen, have a nice sleep? I hope so because we have a lot to do today. Starting with your training collar." He buckled a collar on her neck that had a shocking mechanism in the back; the only thing going to remove this collar was the key in his hand. He started to unbinding sapphire from the chair; when he was finished sapphire wanted to run, but knowing she would be shocked she stayed in the chair.34
"Well, it seems you are a fast learner," the doctor said with a smirk, "but that is just the beginning, Guards!"35
The two guards from last night came around the corner and yanked her to her feet and pushed her out the door and down the corridor to a different door than the one that led back to her concrete prison.36
When the guards opened the door there were several cages lining the walls. Sapphire was shocked a bit at this; did they intend on sticking her in one of those? She was positive they would, and she wasn’t about to be stuck in one of those. When the guards tried to put her in one of the cages she resisted, getting a bolt of electricity from the collar. She gave in, the shock hurt too much to make her resist any longer. They threw her in the cage and locked it. They left the room, and Sapphire was cowering in a corner. One of the other slaves took pity on her and spoke to her.37
"Poor girl, you must be new here." Came a voice that sounded vaguely familiar. Sapphire didn't respond; her body was still shaking from the electric shock.38
"Its okay, I know how it feels to be shocked. Welcome to your new home." She said, trying to calm sapphire and get a response out of her. "If you do what they say, you'll get that collar off a lot sooner."39
Sapphire crawled to the other side of the cage where the other female slave was talking to her. She was more scared than ever, for she didn’t know what they planned to do to her in this place. "How did you end up in this place?" She said with shakiness in her voice.40
"Well," The other slave said, "my family sold me to this place for money. They were so damn greedy."41
Sapphire felt herself ease up a bit, this showed her that there were other people in here going through the same things she was. "How long have you been in here?"42
"Well let's see, I remember it was a week after my birthday. That was on November 5th, but I don’t know the date."43
Sapphire thought about it; she wasn't sure of the date either. "I remember the night of my kidnapping, it was December 17th. But it has been at least two weeks since then. That means you've been in here for a long time, I'm sorry...."44
The female slave looked over at Sapphire, and then looked down. "Its okay, really. I've gotten pretty used to this life. By the way, my name's Kit."45
Sapphire heard footsteps coming down the hall. "My name's Sapphire. You think they are coming for me?"46
"I wouldn't doubt it, but you can never tell." Came a response from Kit. "But we're not supposed to talk, so I am going to stay silent now and I suggest you do the same."47
The guards entered the room and walked past Sapphire. She relaxed and took a deep breath, but then she noticed a guards standing in front of her cage. "You," he said, "time for training."48
The guards threw Sapphire back into her cage. She cowered in a corner until they left. Kit walked to the edge of her cage, looking at Sapphire. “Rough night, Hun?”49
Sapphire looked at her, “It was horrible! I didn’t know anyone could be so cruel.”50
Kit nodded, “It’s going to get worse, at least it did for me.” She looked at sapphire with eyes of compassion. “I wish there was a way I could help you, but I don’t know what I can do.” She looked down.51
Sapphire saw her face and tried to fake the best smile she could. “It’s okay really. What they did was horrible, but your caring heart helps cope with it. It’s so good to know that you care.” She stood up, “If I ever get out of here, I promise I’ll find you.”52
Kit smiled at her, “You’re such a special girl, Sapph. You’re going to be out of here quick”53
Sapphire looked down, “I hope so,” her faked smile turned to a frown, “Because I don’t know how much more of this I can take.”54
“Well Sapph, get some sleep. You’re going to need it. Tomorrow they’ll probably put you through more training.”55
Sapphire lay down on the straw and tried to sleep. She had trouble with that as her mind raced through images of the training they were putting her through. She remembered the face of one of the guards. His face seemed vaguely familiar to her, and then she realized, it was him! It was the man that used to visit her and talk to her. Sapphire knew nothing serious would happen with him around. She let her mind ease and fell asleep.56
Sapphire awoke to a tapping on her cage bars, her body felt weak and sluggish. “Come on slave, let’s go!” Came the voice of the guard. “Damnit slave, get up!” He pressed the shock button and Sapphire jumped to attention. I must learn to move faster; those words imprinted themselves on her mind. When she was at the opening the guard turned her around and bound her hands before he walked her out.57
She was led into a room that looked like someone was going to be filming a movie. There was a living room setting, and also a kitchen. She began to wonder what this would ‘teach’ her about what was to become her new life. The guard pulled her off the set and dressed her in a maid’s uniform. “You are to obey everything the man tells you to do, no matter what it is.” He held up the remote for the collar.58
She was led back onto the set and pushed down to her knees; she was left kneeling for about twenty minutes before another man entered. He was dressed in a casual looking suit. He sat down on the couch in front of her. “What is your name slave?”59
She looked up at him and said, “Sapphire.”60
The man slapped her, “I never said to look at me, and you need to address me properly. That’s one strike.”61
She wondered what he meant by ‘one strike’ but she knew she would find out soon enough. “Yes Sir.”62
“Ah a quick learner; Good, that means that you should only get one strike.” His response was chilling; was she to expect a punishment afterwards? She definitely didn’t want one.63
“Now slave, go fix me a drink. Be quick about it now.”64
She stood up, keeping her gaze at the floor, “What kind of drink would you like sir?”65
He looked at her for a moment, acknowledging her attempt to keep her gaze at the floor, “Surprise me.”66
She turned and went into the fake kitchen; she could see the cameras filming her every move. She wasn’t sure what to make for him; she looked in the cupboards to see what she had to make a drink with. She found an unopened bottle of wine, and then she decided to make him a glass of it. She brought the gals out to him, and kneeled in front of him with her head down.67
He slowly took a sip of the wine, “Ah, such a good slave you are going to make for someone.” He rewarded her with a pat on her head, “Now, come and sit up here with me.”68
Sapphire slowly moved up to the couch and sat down next to him; her eyes were still kept downcast. He looked at her again, “You know, I see no need to go through the rest of the training with you. You’ve learned real fast.” He motioned over to the guard, “She’s done, take her away” The guard grabbed Sapphire and carried her offstage; he quickly stripped her of the maid’s uniform and led her out the doors and back to her cage.69
A young man was running through the forest at an incredible speed, the sounds of gunfire followed him. He found a small opening at the root of a tree and climbed in it. The sounds of the soldiers came and went several times. The young man stayed as quiet as he could, not wanting to give himself away to the soldiers. As soon as he heard the soldiers get a great distance away from him, he emerged from the tree. Before he could even react a shot was fired, hitting him in the leg. The young man fell to the ground, his leg was bleeding excessively.70
“Packard!!” A voice shouted from some distance off. “Packard, you’re dead!” Packard crawled back under the tree root, hoping to be able to hide from the sniper until he could make a move again.71
Sapphire woke up with a scare, she saw Packard in her dream. She was happy and yet sad at the same time. Had what she seen in her dream been real? She hoped so; she wouldn’t be able to last too much longer in this place. It was killing her spirit, and it was changing her. Sapphire was scared that she might begin to enjoy the humiliation like Kit does. She rolled over to her side and tried to fall back asleep.72
Sapphire awoke with a scream; once again she had a nightmare. She was worried that it was true. “Kit, Kit? Are you awake?” She needed someone to talk to and hoped that Kit was awake to talk.73
“Yes, Sapph, What is it?” Kit was awakened by Sapphire’s Scream.74
“I, I had a dream about Packard again. It was so real I could almost feel him, and that scared me so bad.” Sapphire’s eyes were filled with fear.75
“Well what was it about? You can tell me.” Kit was concerned by the tone of Sapphire’s voice, that something was very wrong.76
“He was standing at a military base fighting off another army when his own men turned on him and in a last desperation, he… He shot himself…” Sapphire went further into detail about the dream.77
Kit nodded as Sapphire told the end of the dream vividly. “Doesn’t sound like the Packard you told me about, dear. I think it’s just your mind wandering in search of a familiar place. I went through it when they threw me in these cages at first. Don’t worry, it’ll pass.” They heard footsteps coming down the hall and they distanced themselves from each other and to act like they were sleeping. The guards entered the room and carried Kit away, shutting the lights off and leaving Sapphire alone in the dark. She began to think about her life outside of the cage, the life she had once before. The life she longed for once again. The life that was full of happiness and love, instead of the life of cruelty and malice she was living in. She rolled over and went to sleep, still thinking about these thoughts.78
She didn’t know how long she was asleep for; it seemed to have been only a few minutes. Kit wasn’t back yet, so Sapphire sat up against the bars of the cage. She thought about what she might have been able to do, to prevent her from ending up in such a grave situation. She wondered why she didn’t try and avoid being caught up like she was. Why hadn’t she had been more careful with Packard? Why didn’t she listen to her father? Her eyes started to close, her mind beginning to drift off, thinking about Packard again. Then she fell asleep.79
He was following a trail of blood; this indicating to him that he was not far behind the man that he was after. Soon he could hear what sounded like rustling in the brush ahead. He readied his rifle, preparing to shoot at whatever was in the bushes. Then suddenly, it stopped. He knew that he had been moving silently through the brush himself, and then he felt something touching his leg. He looked down to see that he was up against a trip wire, he knew now that he was in trouble. One false move and it could be his last.80
He stepped back, easing the tension on the trip wire. Before he had time to react, something happened, something he would have never expected, but it did. His back step caused him to step onto a hard metallic object. He froze in place; he knew that this was it now. If he were to step off of it, he would die.81
Just then he heard a rustling in the bushes next to him, but he couldn’t turn to face it. The horror that he couldn’t see was still coming towards him. His military training had set in. Whatever it was, he was going to face it, even if it meant losing his life. The sounds grew closer and closer and his heart began to beat faster and faster with each second. Suddenly that sound turned into a shape, a shape that looked like a man. In that mom everything that he once cared for flashed through his mind. Everything good, everything bad, it was all coming back to him. The memories long forgotten began to surface. The life he once had began to come back into his thoughts, even the ones that he pushed out of his memories. Then in that moment, a single act of courage and bravery took place. In his mind he was ready for this, and then he did it.82
He pulled his foot off of the mine, and his thoughts were back on that life he had forgotten. A life that he missed dearly, a life that he knew would meet him in what he believed would be a good afterlife. The mine exploded, ripping him limb from limb. He body was thrown far from where he was once standing. Through the fire and smoke, a figure was standing there, a smile played upon his face. The trees around him, now soaked in the blood of the man, seemed to whisper his name. Then that man walked away.83
Sapphire stirred from sleep from a tapping sound on one of the bars of her cage.84
"Come on slave, get up." came a familiar voice to her ears. "Sapphire," that same voice said, "I've come to get you out of here, but you need to get up."85
She shot up remembering that voice. "How'd you get in here?" She was puzzled as to why he was returning now.86
"No time for that now, wee need to get out of here." He opened up lock on the cage and opened the door. "Come on, I have some clothes for you." he handed her the clothes and proceeded to take her collar off, throwing it back in the cage.87
Sapphire put the clothes on; it felt odd wearing clothes again. She had been without that luxury for quite some time. They exited the room and were out in the hallway. He looked confused for a minute then led her down the hallway to another door, then entered another room that looked like someone's personal quarters. He looked out the window into the open field, he seemed to be looking for the guard patrols.88
"It seems that they are in-between shifts this is our chance. Lets go!" he opened the window and climbed out, letting himself fall to the ground. "Okay, your turn.'89
Sapphire climbed out the window and jumped down, safely into his arms. They were running to the gates hoping to be able to get out without being noticed, but they weren't that lucky.90
"Hold it!" Came a voice from behind them, it was obviously a soldier. He was firm in his voice; there was no way they were going to escape on his time. "Where the hell do you think you are going with that slave?"91
Rick, the man helping Sapphire, turned around to face him. "I have company orders. I am to take her to the lake for further training. Are you going to try and stop me?"92
The guard looked a little confused, "I'll have to call and ask. Something isn't right. Nielson to tower." he said as he called into the station.93
"Go ahead Nielson."94
"Sir, I have a soldier here claiming he was given orders to take a slave out to the lake. Is this true?"95
There was a pause, Rick closed his eyes and began to speak words without sound. The radio clicked and the voice came back on, "Yes, that is true. Let them go."96
The soldier sighed and motioned them to leave. Rick and Sapphire left quickly, and they entered the forest. After they had gotten far enough away from the base, Sapphire stopped. "How did you know about the training?"97
He looked at her and stopped "I... I saw the commander's itinerary and saw your name on that paper, this was the only chance I had to get you out."98
Sapphire still didn't believe him, there was something wrong with his story. "Are you sure?"99
"Yes I’m sure. Lets keep going though, you're not safe yet." he pulled her along, taking her farther into the forest. They saw a small pond that was about 30 feet long.100
"Well this is where I have to leave you. I have to get out of here too, but I can't be seen with you anymore."101
Sapphire wasn't sure what he meant, was this true? She worried she wouldn't be able to last long on her own; they would find her. "But I can't do this on my own."102
Rick looked at her; his eyes met hers. "You'll do fine. The guards usually won't come out this far because it’s too dangerous for them. I found out where your village is. If you follow that path out of the woods you can find your village from there. Now get going, I'm going to distract them."103
Sapphire looked at him again and then ran down he path out of the woods, each step she took was a step closer to freedom. Soon Rick's figure began to fade, and Sapphire knew she was close to the edge of the forest.104
Several minutes later Sapphire found her way out of the forest. Things looked familiar to her. She was right outside the borders of her village; her home was not far away.105
Sapphire broke into a run and headed towards her home. She may be without Packard, but at least she would be at home.106
Her journey was coming to an end, and everything would be as normal as it could be. She was happy, and she was feeling like she was home again.107
Sapphire ran down a well-trodden path that led to her village. Her heart quickened when she saw smoke rising in the direction of her village. Something was wrong and she knew it, something bad was happening. Sapphire ran even faster, her heart sinking deep into her chest.108
Finally she reached her village. Tears streamed down her face with what she saw. The village was in flames, bodies were piled everywhere and blood covered what wasn't on fire. Sapphire fell to her knees; everything she had once known was gone. Her mind raced through thoughts about Packard. She wondered if she'd find him here, if she'd find his burned corpse, or if she'd find him amongst the dead bodies.109
Suddenly Sapphire heard movement, she stood up and turned towards the movement. Without warning a man jumped out from the brush, slashing at her with his already drawn sword. Sapphire jumped and rolled out of the way, but before she could move again Sapphire felt the blade across her neck. She froze instantly.110
"I knew you'd come back here." Came a familiar voice to Sapphire's ears. "I knew you'd be stupid enough to return to the place you once loved so much."111
Sapphire looked up and saw the man's face. Instantly she recognized him. It was a soldier from that horrid place; the place she thought she was free from. "Why do you hunt me? What makes me so valuable."112
The man looked down at her with a disgruntled face, his lips parted again for a moment as he spoke, "You have no idea, do you? You weren't told anything about what your family did I see." A smirk played across his face as he put his sword away. "You see Sapphire, your family paid us good money to ensure that you'd never see Packard again. As we speak our finest soldiers are hunting him. Hell, we even sent a sniper after him; something we don't often do."113
Sapphire's eyes turned from fear to hatred within an instant as this soldier laughed. Her heart beat even faster; finally she would be able to do something. Without time to think, sapphire pulled back and kicked him in the groin. After he fell Sapphire took off running, trying to escape the clutches of this man. It wasn't long until the man caught up with her. Fury poured from his eyes like a waterfall. "You're going to pay for that dearly." His word echoing off the trees.114
"Just leave me alone, please." Fear was once again in Sapphire's eyes, as she faced this soldier.115
He laughed at her remark, "You're either coming with me dead of alive." He pulled out a pistol and pointed it at her directly. "Now, make your choice."116
Suddenly another man burst through the brush and tackled the soldier. "Packard!!!" Screamed Sapphire. He stood up, his shirt covered in blood and his body badly injured.117
"You touch her again and I will kill you. I swear, I will kill you." Packard screamed at the soldier.118
The soldier stood up; mocking Packard, he pointed the pistol at Sapphire again, "Don’t touch her, eh? How's this?!?!" With those words he pulled the trigger twice, firing off two rounds into Sapphire. She fell to the ground motionless.119
"No!" Packard cried, "Sapphire! Sapphire!" his heart shattered when she didn't answer. He jumped on the soldier, grabbing his gun away from him. "You're dead, you are so freaking dead!!!!" He turned the gun on this soldier, "Hell no!" yelled the soldier as they both struggled with the gun. The soldier had a little more strength that Packard and managed to turn the gun on him and fire a round. Packard screamed in pain and pulled the gun away, pulling the trigger several times until the soldier lay lifeless on the ground.120
Packard jumped up and ran over to Sapphire, she looked up at him with tears in her eyes. "Packard... I'm, I'm sorry." Her head turned away from him as her eyes slowly began to close.121
"Sapphire, stay with me; please, don't die on me. I, I can't lose you now, no..." His heart slowly began to break apart.122
"Packard I... Love..." Her eyes closed and her body went cold and numb. Packard kneeled there in the dirt holding her for what seemed like forever. His tears streamed down his face continuously, his heart felt like it exploded in his chest. Nothing mattered anymore to him, everything he loved was taken away from him now. He laid his head on her chest as he fell into a sleep, his wounds throbbing and bleeding everywhere. He could feel his heart slowing down and his own body growing cold. Soon he too passed on.

(which made her mouth hurt immensely),,, the story is well written, but here, there is so much room for you to show the reader what she is going through. Biting at chains would do more than make her mouth hurt... it would chip her teeth, make her mouth bleed. Show this to the reader.
