"Mom, I want to have a party." I told my mother as we were unloading the dishwasher. 1

"Why?" She stopped for a minute and looked at me.2

"Because I want to invite a couple of people over so we can hang out and watch movies and stuff... That's all." I was lying. I knew it. But it was so easy to wrap my parents around my little finger when it came to me having more friends.3

"All right. We'll see about a day, but not right now. We need to get this kitchen clean if we want to eat dinner anytime soon.”4

“Fine.” I felt bad about lying to her this way, but I really wanted to have a huge party, and it would be nice to let them think that I was doing something else. 5

After dinner, I brought up the subject of a party with my parents. 6

“So… When can we do this party thing?” I asked coyly. I was trying not to let them see why I really wanted to have a party, but it was hard. Especially since they knew that Adam and I were dating now.7

“Well… I was thinking this Friday night. We know you don’t have to work on Saturday and it would be a good chance for you to have a bunch of people over.” My mom could be just as coy as I could. I think she could see through my “innocence” but I wasn’t sure. 8

“I think it’s a great idea that you want to have a few people over!” My dad has always told me that he wished I had more friends. 9

“Yeah! Ok… So, Friday night at about seven thirty? Eight? How’s that sound?”10

“Fine. Just make sure that you order pizza before everyone gets here or you’ll have a bitch of a time figuring out what everyone wants.” My mom wanted to know how many people I wanted to invite. I could tell.11

“Yeah, I’ll be sure to do that. So… are you guys gonna stay while the house is full of rowdy teenagers, or are you gonna leave the house to me?” I wanted them gone. She knew it. 12

“Well… we could go see a movie and have dinner that night. What do you think honey?” My dad was trying to be helpful. How sweet. The poor bastard had no idea what I was up to.13

“I think it’s a wonderful idea. Let’s go make the reservations right now. That way Axel can make a list of the people she wants to invite! Where do you want to eat?” I winced. She knew. And she was deliberately keeping my dad in the dark. And since when does she use my dads’ nickname for me? 14

“I don’t know… where do you want to eat honey?” Poor dad. I felt bad for lying to him like this. But at least I didn’t have to come out and say that I wanted to have a freakin’ huge party, get trashed and take advantage of Adam while I was at it! 15

“Here.” A condom landed on my bed. “I hope you know what you are doing. This is a big decision, and I just want you to know that I will be hiding all the alcohol!” God! She knows me too well. I can’t hide anything from her… 16

“Thanks. I do. And Adam and I have talked about this! I’m not a child; I can think for myself, you know.”17

“I know, honey. I just don’t want you to do anything that you’ll regret.” I hated when she got all mom-ish. “How long have the two of you been dating?” Oh, fuck! The truth comes out.18

“I can see your point. But I still feel kind of left out.”22

“I know. I’m sorry, I just couldn’t tell you. It was all so new, and I didn’t want you to go and do something we’d both regret.”23

“He was there when we went on our first date. I told him not to tell you because… well… you know.”25

“The bastard! I’ll have to have a little chat with him later.”26

“But I told him not to tell you! He was just doing what I asked.”27

“Yes, I know. But a father should tell his wife when her daughter is dating someone.”28
