Terzin stood on the north end of the ship. Draped in a dark tunic, and a black, hooded cloak. His sapphire eyes studied the water, like a hawk gazing at the ground for an unlucky mouse. Neirn’s red mist emanated at Terzin’s belt. They had traveled for two days on water. Catairn walked out of the small ship cabin, and took stand beside Terzin. His black hair waved as the wind blew. They stood, silent for awhile, then Catairn spoke,2
"Terzin, don’t you think that the capital will be heavily guarded? How can we be sure he is even still there.?", asked Catairn, in a low, grumbling voice.3
"Do you doubt my wisdom? Before we get to Saryn, we will gather the help of the Nargs. They are in debt to me for something that happened long ago.", said Terzin, grimly.4
"Nargs?", asked Catairn, quizzically. 5
"They are brutes, with little intelligence, but much honor. I saved them long ago, when the Empire tried to overthrow them. I knew they would prove valuable allies, which is the only real reason I helped them. Ever since the Empire saw a dragonkin aid the Nargs, they have left them in peace.", replied Terzin. "I have another matter to discuss with you. You need a new name, one that fits a dragonkin. Fierce, but smooth."6
Terzin thought about a name. His twisted mind tried to come up with something that would put fear into the hearts of man. His own name had meant ‘dark shadow’. He recalled all of the names of fallen dragonkin. Then, as he mentally went back in time, one stood out to him. The name of his brother. Mezaj. Mezaj had been lost at a young age, very long ago, when the Empire ambushed the once thriving dragonkin village. His brother was prophecised over, by the first of dragonkin, to be the most powerful of them all. He would lead dragons and dragonkin alike into battle. Terzin had been jealous of Mezaj, but honored also, to be related by blood with one so powerful. That all changed when the Empire attacked. Mezaj was either killed, or taken. Nobody knew because the body was never found.7
Terzin snorted in anger. How dare they take my poor brother? He was lead us against the humans and elves, and all others that opposed us, thought Terzin. The odd thing about dragonkin, is that the are fierce, and ruthless to other races, but to each other, they are quite kind. Evil, of course, but families of dragonkin are bound together, not as much by love, as you or I would think, but honor. Mezaj had meant ‘cold heart’. Terzin would have been most honored having a brother like that.8
Dragonkin were of the most feared creatures in all of Baeltaria. The first dragonkin was born out of darkness, and granted powers of dragons, they were human in form, but when enraged, the fierceness of a dragon controlled them. Then the dragonkin had children with humans.. Terzin had learned early, that acts of violence and fear were the only thing that gave them power over others. That, and the use of magic. Terzin grinned as he recalled slaying a small farming village. The people didn’t stand a chance against him. Their terrified faces burned a permanent picture in his mind, and he smiled at the memory of the horrified face of a woman as he killed her husband in front of her. He then had preceded to kill her with a large ball of fire. A small grin crossed Catairn’s face, another thing too, was that dragonkin minds were connected. One could know the thoughts of others, if one of them allowed it.9
Terzin decided that he would give Catairn the name of his lost brethren. He spoke,10
"Catairn, I have decided to give you the name of my lost brother, Mezaj.". Catairn nodded in satisfaction. Then Terzin spoke again, "It means ‘cold heart’. I think it is a suitable name for you, but, fail to live up to it, and I will be displeased.".11
"I take much honor in bearing the name of your brother.", said Catairn.12
Terzin replied, "Good, now I shall call you by that name. Once we reach Saryn, the king will be sure to fear two dragonkin.".13
"I am eager to start our slaughter.", said Catairn, who was now named Mezaj. "I have a new craving.... for blood.".14
Terzin put a hand on Mezaj’s shoulder and said, "Don’t worry, your thirst will be quenched soon enough. It is common for us to thirst for blood, it is in our nature. We will capture the boy and slay the elf that is with him, Istfael is his name.". Something inside Mezaj changed, only for a moment, like a flicker of light in a dark cave. The name, Istfael caused it to happen, but it was soon snuffed out by darkness. Terzin shuddered, a thick fog lay ahead of them. So, we run into the Fog of Nehlim., thought Terzin.15
Mezaj pointed, and said, "That fog, we should try and avoid it, it is dangerous.". Terzin grinned.16
"The creature wouldn’t dare try to harm us. Let the wind take it away.", said Terzin. He put of his palm and said, "Shol.". A gust of wind blew against the ship. Small waves rippled in the water, and the wispy fog was separated as the wind blew through it. Then it was no more. "There we go.", said Terzin. Mezaj stood calmly. The faint cry of a seagull whined in the distance. Terzin’s sapphire eyes shone like diamonds. Then he spoke.17
"Mezaj, I trust you know a considerable amount of magic already,". Mezaj nodded. "But, there are still some things I need to teach you....darker things. Magic that will put real fear into the hearts of all," said Terzin, wickedly. An evil grin crossed Mezaj’s face.18
"I will live up to the standards of your brother. All will fall at our feet, begging for mercy, but none will receive it,", said Mezaj, harshly. Terzin patted Mezaj on the shoulder.19
"That, my brother, is how dragonkin think. Now, let us go, and I can educate you in more powerful magic.", said Terzin.20
