Chapter 4.1
Esme stormed through the front door.2
“I’m back!” she called to an empty reception room. Usually she only got the housemaid rushing to her but today was completely different, her mother came flying down the hall way, eyes blazing. 3
“Esme Olivia Kingst, get here, NOW!” her mother screamed at her. Esme thought it was a bit of a stupid thing to say, seeing as she was only about a metre away from her, but when her mother was in this mood, it was best not to say anything.4
“Tell me Esme, what have you been doing in the past, shall we say, half and hour?” her mother questioned her in that patronizing tone.5
“Ummmm, just got back from the lesson at school, dropped in at a cafe on the promenade, then came back here.” It was actually a little travel cafe off the motorway, but it was Esme’s secret, and her mother was such a snob.6
“Really” her mother replied, “It’s just that some people have called to complain abut your behaviour on that dangerous thing you drive around on.” Esme let out a dramatic sigh,7
“Ride mum, ride, you don’t drive a motorbike.”8
“Esme Olivia, I don’t care what you do on that damn bike, just don’t go rocketing around throwing all sorts of only-god-knows-what at reporters!” Esme watched with a bored look as her mother’s face went a deeper and deeper shade of red. “ And for god’s sake, TUCK YOUR SHIRT IN!!!” and with that last comment, she turned on her heel and slammed through the door into the offices.9
Esme glanced at Slick, and murmured sarcastically,10
“If that’s what mum’s like, I can’t wait for dad to get home.” After getting a coke from the fridge, she went up to her bedroom and flicked on her TV.11
