It is the computer's fault

I stared a the black screen, petrified. What if it exploded? Imploded? You've guessed it, it is my first time working on a computer, I have to do everything by myself, no one around to help me do it, or to save me in case the computer goes crazy!1

I've heard the rumours, people switching the computer on and then simply disappearing. Often, files or folders on the computer disappear mysteriously, this list can go on and on, but before I terrify myself further, I'll rather stop.2

I sat there staring, trying to muster the courage to at least switch on the screen. Slowly, I stuck out my hand, touching the computer, it's so cold! i pull back hastily, what if I woke the monster inside? I slap my self on the cheek lightly, I'm a grown woman, how can I be so silly as to believe in monsters!3

I stuck out my hand, this time not wavering and switch on the screen and then the computer. It slowly comes to life and finally, I see the working screen before me. I hesitate, but then click on an icon with a blue and white "W" on it. This is rumoured to be a program where you create documents, only to seem the disappear when the computer decides to stop working.4

I start typing some, so far so good, I'm still alive and nothing disappeared...yet. I slowly start to enjoy myself, and soon I forget all about time, I simply enjoy myself typing. 5 hours and 500 pages later I decide that it is time to do something else. 5

I click on the cross rumoured to close the program and suddenly a message appears. I once hear someone say to simply say no at any unexpected messages, so without hesitation I clicked "no"6

I then proceeded to switch off the computer, but my hand midway to the screen I suddenly froze as two other things entered my mind, the first was that I was reminded constantly to save a file I'm working on. Could it be? Could it be that the box popping up was asking to save my work?7

The second thought hit me like a sledgehammer. "The computer users number one enemy is himself."8

Five hours of work, five hours and I lost it all through stupidity. there and then, I decided to follow the path of all computer uses...blame the program, blame the computer. It just lost" the file didn't it? It should have saved it, but it didn't. Yes, I had nothing to do with it, it is not my fault. I finished switching everything off and went to prepare dinner, telling everyone how stupid computers are.9

Author notes

Hmm, I'm not so sure if this is actually funny.

Lol....oops! Yes indeed, as the sign above my workstation states, 'If all else fails - blame the computer.' Gotta love that quote

This little episode certainly highlights what a vast majority of people most probably have done, and still do. Let it be a lesson to you, READ what the computer's telling you, and don't listen to everything your friends tell you!

LOL Who has not done just this? I know I have! My first computer, I called Customer Service so many times that the people at HP knew me by my first name! I learned to "save, and save often" only after losing so many important pieces, especially parts of my book. I was often on such a roll that I would forget to save, and suddenly I would find that horrible message that says that a critical error has occurred and the computer will shut down! Talk about pulling one's hair out!

This is really quite cute. We all know the feeling, and we have all learned costly lessons-just as you did. lol Thank you so much for entering this delightful piece in my contest. Hugs, Patricia

It is. It shows how humans act... in situations in which they've been stupid, they've made the mistakes; blame someting else...

I like this piece too You're a good writer
