Watching Her- Part 21

When Kevin awoke the next morning, Sarah was not at his side. He thrust himself off of his bed at the realization that she was gone. He threw on his wife beater that he’d worn the previous night and some shorts and a pair of old sandals he didn’t dare to wear anymore. 1

Kevin raced down the stairs, snatching his keys and answering to his mother’s morning protest that he would be back in a minute. The truck started and chugged down the road at the command of Kevin’s anxious foot. He made a sharp turn and raced to Sarah’s street, swerving at the hard turns, not using his flashers, and barely stopping at street lights. 2

With a large squeak of his brakes, he parked diagonally in Sarah’s empty driveway. He slid out of the truck and walked quickly to the door, ringing the doorbell numerous times and pounding on the door. His alerts were useless, as nobody answered the door: pure silence. 3

He waited for a few seconds, knowing deep down that nobody would be there. He backed up and looked up at the beautiful two story brick house. The comfortable summer chairs were no longer on the porch, the pots full of flowers, the wind chimes, the simple rug: all gone. Kevin walked around to the back of the yard, and walked in the dirty holes left imprinted in the ground from the stepping stones that had been taken as well. The pool was drained and nothing remained. He looked up behind him to Sarah’s balcony, only seeing the wooden railing that no longer encased her cushioned chair, table, flowers or things. Rubbing his head in dismay, he walked to the front again, passing the pale orange tulips that surrounded the wooden railing that secluded the porch. 4

He continued to rub his eyes, looking at the cement porch. The wind blew and he heard something flap and flutter. The wind stopped and he raised his head. A slow breeze came again, longer, and Kevin looked up. A piece of paper caught in the door. He made his way to the door slowly, but snatched the note with haste. Opening, it read:5

Georgia- Mississippi Sports Tournament    -Sarah6

Kevin noticed the girly handwriting that must’ve been hers along with her signature that was a dead give-a-way. 7

But that wasn’t what he was focused on. The G-M Tournament was about a week of sports teams competing through different schools. It was seven days of Mississippi vs. Georgia in school sports teams, well, of those that had signed up. Soccer, volleyball, football, tennis, basketball, and swimming teams from Georgia and Mississippi versed eachother in fun. The back to back states collided sports head on. 8

Kevin gasped and smiled. Sarah would join her new school’s volleyball team that would be in the tournament, just as Kevin’s school would be. He laughed to himself, dropping the note on the cement, his face brightened with a smile. 9

And with thoughts running wild in his brain, he pulled out of the driveway and headed off, knowing that he would see her again in less than a month’s time…10
