Diary of a Lunatic: Big Brother

January 3rd, 20061

'Twas my first day back at school. The norm would be me telling you of how my friends missed me and hugged me and gave me the presents that they forgot to give me before Christmas break. But, I just started my junior year and things are different. I haven't met anyone that really wants to talk to me and my friends from last year are all someone else's friends.2

I sat at the lunch table humming the tune to a song I like. There's a reason I sit alone, you know. I guess everyone just thinks I'm different. My brother came over and sat next to me. My brother was kind of like me. He was my only friend in high school. I'm pretty sure that I was his only friend, as well. My brother and I are twins. Even though he always considers himself the older, smarter one, he's wrong. In the middle of my thinking, Brian, another junior, came over and sat with my brother.3

"Hey Aaron," Brian smiled. He turned to me and waved and then turned back to my brother. They carried on a conversation for quite a while. I was a little bit in shock because I'd never seen Aaron with anyone before. Besides, Brian is a little on the 'cool' side.4

Wow.5

The rest of the day went by quickly. I got three tests back. D. D. and C. Did I mention I'm not much for school? I usually skip but the whole Brian thing threw off my groove.6

I got on the bus and as I was walking back to where my brother was sitting, a stuck-up girl named Holly stuck her foot out. I tripped and fell flat on my face. My books fell all over the isle. I was humiliated.7

"The back's for the cool people, Carlisle. You just don't belong," she teased. I felt a hand pick me up and hand me my books. My brother smiled and took me to the back of the bus with him. Aaron? Sitting in the cool seats?8

"Becky, this is Robbie," my brother introduced me to the boy he was sitting with. I smiled and waved.9

"What, is she deaf?" Robbie smirked. Aaron punched him in the shoulder and told him to cut it out.10

"She's a cool girl," my brother explained. I smiled at him and sat in the seat across from him.11

'Thanks,' I mouthed to Aaron. He grinned his silly grin and continued mingling among the 'cools'. 12

"Sorry, Becky," Robbie apologized. He looked at my brother as if he was looking for approvement.13

"No worries," I replied,"Check out my tests." I threw my D, D, and C at Aaron. He laughed and threw them in the trash.14

"I'm surprised you even got them back. Don't you usually skip these periods?" my brother knew my patterns because usually he would skip at the same times I do. I shrugged my shoulders. Aaron put his hands behind his head and relaxed against the bus seat. I watched Robbie and him talk the whole ride home, occasionally throwing in my in-put.15

Our stop finally came and Aaron and I were getting off the bus, another stuck-up girl grabbed Aaron by the arm.16

"Hey, Aaron. You're sister's a loser. Why don't you ditch the dork?" she laughed and the girls next to her smirked at me and giggled. Aaron pulled roughly out of her grasp.17

"Yeah...maybe I will," he told her. She smiled her sexy smile and he left.18

I threw the door open with a jerk. I ran to my room, threw my books down on my bed, and sobbed. How could he do that to me? He's my brother and he's thinking of leaving me behind on his journey to popularity. The more I thought about it, I didn't blame him. 24 hours ago, I never cared about popularity nor where I was on the journey and now I am crying about it. Aaron opened my door gently.19

"Becky, come on. Stop crying," I felt his hand on my back.20

"Why did you say that?," I inquired quietly. He hesitated as to what his answer would be. That's how I knew he was going to tell me the truth.21

"Sarah...she's beautiful. But you're my sister and you've been my only friend for...ever. I'm sorry. I love you," he whispered, following my example of soft speaking. I smiled. He wiped the tears from my eyes and hugged me.22

"I love you, too, big brother," I muffled into his sweatshirt. He always liked it when I called him my big brother. If he wasn't the big brother, that would mean he was the youngest child. When I'm mad at him, I call him little brother. But when we have moments like this, he gets to be big brother.23
