Life with sargeant-chapter four

I woke up in a clean bed in the medical center. I looked around at the uniform room in all its sanitized glory. Damn. On the other hand, maybe they'd send me home. Suddenly a nurse walked in and to my surprise it was a male. 1

"Well, you're Kane Murphey?"2

"Yes sir" I replied as I looked him up and down. I wasn't much of a good judge on things but this guy was really good looking.3

"I've never heard the name 'Kane' for a girl before. Is that what you were born with?" I've never heard it on any other girl before either.4

"Yes sir. My parents both decided they wanted to be different and as you can see, I was the guinea pig. My other siblings have normal names." The nurse seemed to be writing what I said down on his clipboard. That's weird...5

"If you don't mind me asking, what are you writing on that thing? Are you writing what I say? Are you sure you're a nurse here?? I haven't seen any other guys on base..." I sat up quickly and nervously as I wondered if this guy was trying to steal me or rape me or something. 6

"Settle down! I'm writing how you're feeling. You lost a lot of blood, Murphy. But," The nurse looked at me as if he were looking over his glasses, except that he didn't have any.7

"We aren't going to send you home. You didn't loose enough blood to go home, but you will need to stay in the medical hall for two or three days. Partially because of the blood loss and partially so we can make sure you're not cutting yourself. If you continue to cut yourself we will have to keep you under surveilance every second. Yeah, that means even in the bathroom. And if that doesn't work, you'll have to go to a rehabilitation center. I don't think you want to go there Ms. Murphy. If you're not able to handle this problem, we have an excelent psychiatrist on base. He's in main hall, room 163." If it gets me out of here, I'll go. 8

"I think I'd like to go to him. Is it possible for me to go now?" The nurse stood for a few minutes, perhaps pondering the idea.9

"Well, allright, but I'm going to walk you there. Just to make sure you don't faint or something."10

"Great let's go." I swung my legs over the side of the medical bed. Thank God I was wearing all of my clothes. I didn't want this guy seeing me stark naked. He grabbed a light blanket for me. "No thank you" I said to it. Like I was cold. We were in the middle of alabama for pete's sake.11

As we made our way to the main hall, I looked to see if I could peer through the barrack windows. As I was looking in one of the windows, I saw two guys in a room. 12

"Nurse..."13

"Nurse Jhonson. Just call me Jhonson."14

"Ok, Nur...I mean, Jhonson, is this academy like, coed or something? I just saw guys in that barrack room over there." I was so puzzled. I thought it was a girls academy15

"Yes, Murphy. You haven't seen them because you haven't been off the base. And yesterday there were none in the gym because they eat at that time. Anymore irrelivant questions?" Geez guy, I was just asking. You don't need to chew my face off.16

"No. Well, I have another question but I think it might be rather important. Do you know how long I'm going to be here? Like, if you get sent here because you act bad, do they make you stay here for a really long time?" The guy sighed as if I had just insulted him. 17

"It depends."18

"Depends on what?"19

"Depends on how long you're parents want you to be here! Now stop talking, or you'll wear yourself out!" I stumbled along, not realising how week I actually felt. I'd lost a lot of blood before and didn't need any medical help. I would be fine if he would just leave me alone. But I knew he wouldn't, so I just accepted. For the first time in my life I had accepted something positive. Before I would have tried to run away from him, but instead I accepted. No, Kane, you can't accept. You're the rebel. The fighter. The person who always says no when everyone else says yes. I took a look up at Jhonson, and ran.20
