~Chapter One~1

The world around her quivered, in and out of reality, like a flickering flame that did not want to be extinguished. Everything was surreal and ghostly, as if she were not truly seeing it with her own eyes but through the eyes of some translucent spirit. Torches lining either side of the dark alley flickered, quivering in and out of being with a mad, thrashing wrath.2

"You said you'd be there." In the oppresive hush, everything seemed loud, even the silent whisper. "I guess you just said that to comfort me." Lowering her head to hide the sudden emotion showing in the cold blue eyes, she sniffed frostily clearing her mind of any and all emotions...not caring if the world did become a ghostly place.3

She had never truly felt like she belonged here, and it had always seemed that she was nothing other than an invisible soul, with just enough flickering, quivering hints of life in her to be there for when she was required of something. Hissing between clenched teeth, she wandered through the alley, glancing through the yellowed, grimed window panes, searching for the familiar face. If he was here, like he had claimed he would be, then she would at least be able to convinced herself that she was good for something, however small it was.4

The arched gate covered most of the gate, covered with archaic text that had meant something, once upon a time, but were now for no other use then to look pretty and decorate the actual gate itself...yet, many years ago, it had held the history of the city.5
