After Kevin’s moment with Sarah, he took her home, and exchanged nervous goodbyes. When he went back home, his mind was barely on the road. His mind dashed to the moment when he kissed her, and replayed it in his mind until it was practically real. He felt her soft lips and tongue and-1
Kevin swerved past a car as it honked angrily in his direction. He laughed and refocused. 2
Arriving at home, his parents were still asleep and barely noticed his absence or arrival. Kevin flew up the stairs and looked out his window- her curtain’s were closed. He turned on his computer and quickly signed on to Yahoo! Messenger and spotted her name: 3

Kevin didn’t want Sarah to be nervous around him, and him around her. He felt the best way was to be sweet and normal. He would surprise her by a visit.5
The day after the party (Monday), Kevin pulled into Sarah’s driveway. He knocked on the door and was greeted by Sarah’s mother, holding her baby brother, Oscar. Kevin put a smile on.6
“Hi, my name’s Kevin. Is Sarah home?” He put on the cheesiest smile he could. He wanted to impress Sarah by not only befriending her mother, but showing her that he was respectful.7
However, Sarah’s mother put her unoccupied on her hip. “You’re the boy that kept Sarah out all night, aren’t ya’?”8
Kevin’s smile wiped clear off his face. He thought quickly. “Um, I took Sarah to a party last night, and we left at 10:30, but one of my friends drove in front of me and had a car wreck. So we took him to the hospital and had to wait for hours. Sarah insisted that she-”9
“Mom, who’s at the door?” Sarah came down the stairs. She looked plain, wearing jean capris and a green tank top. Her hair was in a bun, obvious evidence of a late sleep. She looked up and saw Kevin, and a huge grin settled on her face. But she caught sight of her frowning mother, and wiped away her happiness and scratched her face.10
“I was just meeting your friend, Devan, here.”11
“It’s Kevin, mam.” 12
“Yes, Kevin. He was telling me why you didn’t get home until 2:30 yesterday. Car wreck, huh,” she asked, turning back to Kevin. “Is your friend alright?”13
Kevin stuttered. “Um, I believe so. Broken leg, whiplash, he blacked out for some time and the doctors fear of a concussion. But he should be out before school starts.”14
Sarah’s mother winced. “Well, I’ll pray for him. Until then, are you here to see Sarah?”15
“Umm, yes mam. I’d like to take her out to get something to eat, unless you-“16
“No, no, that’s fine. But she must be home before sunset.”17
“I promise, mam.”18
A huge grin settled on Sarah’s face and she walked onto the porch and closed the front door.19
“Who got in a car wreck?” She was smiling.20
“Umm… Johnny…. Johnny Jones.” He laughed.21
“So where are we going?”22
“It’s a surprise,” Kevin replied with a huge grin. He looked her over. “Uh oh.”23
“What, no compliment this time?”24
“No, but you’re not dressed for where we’re going. I’d say… old tennis shoes, crappy shirt, plain shorts, keep the hair.”25
Sarah laughed. “Okay. Five minutes?”26
Kevin grabbed her hand. “I’ll wait for you.”27
Sarah smiled again and opened the door, sliding her hand from his.28
She hopped out the door wearing a white spaghetti strap top, plain black cotton capris, old black tennis shoes, and her hair in a ponytail. She hopped in the truck, still smiling. Kevin smiled big and turned on the radio, scanning until stopping at ‘Infiltrate’ by Trillville. He pulled out the driveway and started down the road. He broke the silence.29
“Where’s the best place to go mudding?”30
