Christmas at Grandma's

After moving to Canada from Germany in 1952, we were all alone, with no relatives, in a new country. This is still true 54 years later.  Every Christmas though, we would receive a Christmas parcel from our grandparents filled with cookies, chocolates, small toys and clothing for us six grandchildren.  1

How we treasured that parcel, a big box filled with smells, tastes and love from my grandmother's home to ours! I always think of that as our way of having a Christmas at grandma's house.  We spent Christmas like this, feeling her love through the many miles that separated us.2

    superb emotional short piece

when i was younger i never thought of the past and how we spent our feasts and the love and happiness we felt during that time. now as we grew up the past started lurking at us as a lot of the beloved left this world and inhabited a safe place in our minds that we visit when we are in trouble seeking their advise and longing for them. wonderful piece my dear

    good

I can certainly identify with this one. It
seems there is nothing like the taste of home when you are living away. This is warm and heartfelt. Darlee77

Your word count is right on.
I like this. Yhe only thing is it does not read like a story. If it was all a continuous thought it would be more of one, but the shift in the second half changes it.
It was a wonderful piece to read and I really appreciate your sharing it.
    Thank you and good luck

i love the cozy feel of this true story. it's a little bit of history on a personal level which makes it much more real than a book. i'm almost fifty and receiving a package in the mail still excites me as much as when i was six

very nice and nostalgic. what memories to hold on christmas, whether you knew her or not, your mind associates the smells with a person who I am sure loved you dearly and held you as a baby. what a great write, 100 words or less, thats a tuffy!~~tracy

This is an excellent snap-shot of family history and a good template for a much longer story. This one begs to be
    expanded.

That's a tough one, 100 words or less, granny... I use to send 'care packages' to my younger brother and his five daughters and two sons... never thought of putting smelly things in there... (that's good smelly things, of course!)

To clarify, I never knew my grandma -left Germany when I was 2 and the only way I knew her was through these parcels and from the letters that Mom read to us all until my grandma died when I was 19. These are my only memories of her, and I cherish them dearly.

This is nice Erika, but could be a lot better if you were to lengthen it but talking about more than just the cookies. I'm sure you cared about your grandmother for more reasons that that, and the poem would have been a lot better had you drawn a better picture of this lady. Maybe you could have described her feelings about Hitler, or the war, or how she met your grandfather, something that would make her more loveable for the reader. As it stands now, she's vey flat.

This is great! A short read but there was lots of quality. You writing is always great and you just get to the point and say what needs to be said. The flow was nice, you had a good lead, and I didn't get distracted. Again, another wonderful story by: ~drumroll~....... Grannyeri! ~crowd goes wild~

    I enjoyed this one.

Well I see that you do indeed have some precious memories. Although I would find it hard to put anything into one hundred words about my family. I liked the images though and I am glad that I clicked on this today to read.
