When those doors were opened to me, I did not feel ready to step through. I was wary and confused, afraid to take the chance. It was too easy to refrain from doing what my heart pleaded, but now the fates have been decided for us both.2
The grass is never greener on the other side, and as the car pulled up to take me away, I wished no more for serenity.3

I tried developing this a bit more, but I could't get any further with it. Maybe I'll extend it at some point.

Your word count is right on.
I am not completely sure wehre you were going with this. I would have to agree with your author note, it needs further development. It is an intriguing start to a story, but there is just not quite enough to get a full grip on it.
