Daddy, Please Come Home

Dear Daddy,1

I thought I’d write you a letter because mummy said that you hadn’t written to her in a while. Have you and mummy had an argument? If you have she really misses you. She cries and prays for you at night… I don’t know why though. She says, “Please let him be safe, please let him live…” and other things like that. I just keep telling her you were lucky because you got to go on a very long holiday with the other men in the town. Can you come back for me please?2

Daddy, I miss you lots. It was good when you were here, I got to eat chocolate everyday – but I don’t ever get chocolate any more. Mummy says it’s because all the men are away on holiday that we don’t have as much chocolate because you are eating it all. Is that true? I’d like some chocolate.3

Oh daddy thank you very much for my birthday card – it was very nice. Why didn’t you come home for my birthday though? Will you come home for Christmas – mummy says she hopes you’ll be home for Christmas. Toby’s daddy was home for his birthday when it was his birthday. Mummy said it was because Toby’s daddy was very lucky to get a train home. I wish you were very lucky daddy.4

Daddy when you get home will you come to the party huts with us? Some people have private party huts in their back garden but we don’t. I don’t mind though because all of my friends go to the community party huts. Do you have party huts on you’re holiday, daddy? They are big things made of metal that go under the ground – it’s scary when they have a party at the middle of the night though. It’s all dark and we’re not allowed to have any lights on in the streets anymore, and our windows are “blacked-out” so no light escapes. It’s scary.5

Even worse daddy, is the party sirens! They are very loud, and when the party sirens go off you have to go to the party huts. Mummy makes sandwiches and brings juice because sometimes the parties last all night – it can be very cold in the party huts Daddy. And we’re not allowed to leave the party until the party sirens go again. I don’t like the silly rules.6

But if you don’t stick by the rules you get in big trouble – and I think you get sent away and your houses get destroyed. I think this because Toby and his family weren’t in the party huts two days ago and yesterday when I walked to school Toby’s house and the houses near his were fallen down, and all his stuff was ruined. Toby hasn’t been at school since and I haven’t seen Toby’s mummy and baby sister since. I don’t think it’s very fair. Toby didn’t even get to say good-bye.7

Daddy will you hurry up and come home because I miss you a lot… and so does mummy. It’s not fun without you here. All the other Ladies cry a lot – especially when the men comes with the telegram. Usually the telegram means good things – like a telegraph from their husband or son who’s away telling them they love them. Mummy says they are just missing the men very very much and that I am not to worry.8

I love you lots and lots,9

Wow...this is an amazing entry! I like this a lot, it has a lot of emotion in it and shines with young innocence. I like how you discuss all the excuses a mother would have used as to why certain things happened. I love this, it really is an amazing entry. Good luck

very well researched ! I like the way the child sees it all as a game, or a holiday! quite sad too... id hate to be the child, with a mother always lying to me... tho she'd call it 'protection'... hmmmm
