White Christmas

The guys played hockey on the lake on December 24 that year. The ice was so smooth, that if they missed the puck, they'd have to chase it all the way from the main beach to Pawsey's cabin.  There were no bumps or ruts to stop it, and it just kept going and going, kind of like the Energizer battery commercial, I guess.1

Everything was still brown and drab out. No snow had fallen yet, and we had gone out to enjoy the warm temperatures ( about -10 C or so), have a wiener roast and take a skate around the lake.  We took our two young ones, then about 2 and 3, put them in the sleigh, and skated them all around the small lake.2

It was clear to the bottom of the lake in the shallow places, and we could see the bubbles as they came up to the ice at the surface.3

That day will always stay with me, it was so perfect.  And it got even better, because just before dusk, as we were getting ready to go home, the first snow flakes fell - big, thick, fluffy flakes that continued falling for the rest of the evening. 4

By 8:00 p.m. that night, as we were heading to church, the ground was white, and winter had finally really arrived, just in time for Christmas.5

As we sang carols and thought back to that first Christmas, we were happy and content. 6

We've never had another year like that, although this year is close. We've had a skiff of snow, but the ice on the lakes and sloughs is not rough. I hope we have a white Christmas again, so the grandkids can go tobogganing, and we can all go for a nice walk after our Christmas meal.

I love this story, just the fact that it snowed on Christmas is amazing. I have never had a white Christmas before so I am glad that you have. Great writing.

    I like it!

I was raised in warmer climes, and love stories like this. Our winters afforded no frozen lakes nor snow worth mentioning, so reading this is like science fiction to me. *laughs* Fun read!

    Beautiful

nice, in the first paragraph try to not use the word puck twice in such a close space it breaks the flow this is a nice sentimental piece

Very great, just in time to get the spirit going for Christmas! Last time I turned around it was still Thanksgiving! lol Here in Florida, it doesn't snow, but this reading gives me a general idea, white and cold- I don't know. But thanks for the read and good luck in my contest!

    great job

I hope you can, too, Grannyeri. I love your story. Being from
the South, I only know a little about snow. Shancy.

such sweet memories Gran...it's beyond the white of Christmas but the warmth and love of family that you are writing here. it's in every word. and if real snow doesn't arrive for you for Christmas this year, I'll still imagine a sprinkle of fairy-dust over your house!!!

Nice poem we all want to have a white chrismas it's good and sometimes it evens affects our ways of celebrating X-mas.It's absolutely true that we don't always have a white X-mas. I have lived in Denmark for 6 years and they didn't have white x-mas since 1995.

    very well written

This is a beautiful memory. You describe everything so well.
I miss the past holidays too. When my daughter was little, my mom was still alive and more family lived in our part of the country. You did a very good job of bringing back some really good memories for you and me too.
