Enlightenment [Chapter 1]

1

“Okay, this is easy. I bet everyone has already finished this question.” Imogen murmured to herself. 2

She chewed on her pencil and glanced around the room, class was nearly over. She just had to finish this question. This one question. And she could do it, it was simple. All she had to do was figure out what Y was, then times that by X and then by A, but wait, she didn’t know what they were either. All of a sudden a ringing interrupted Imogens thoughts. 3

Finally, the end of the school day. Imogen thought to herself as she picked up her equipment from her table.  4

“Hey Imogen.” A girl came rushing up to Imogen, “I, like, cant believe that quiz!” 5

Imogen turned and faced the short brunette. Suddenly Imogen felt like her little follower might be changing into something beautiful. Imogens own little creation. 6

“It was hard huh?” Imogen replied, smiling a little.7

“Like, no way. Its was like, so, like, EASY!” The midget shouted in a high pitched girly voice.8

Imogen rolled her eyes, and grabbed her folder. She spun around and began to walk to the cafeteria. The under sized familiar followed. Imogen had never really liked Stella. She was too bouncy, and hyper. Way hyper. Cant forget the hyper-ness. Nope. No. 9

“Cant ignore the hyper-ness…” Imogen whispered to herself, deep in thought.10

“Like, sorry. What was that, you like, said?” Stella pulled up her huge bag, that was slung over her shoulder. 11

“Nothing. Listen Stella. Not that I don’t like your company… but, I think someone over there is calling your name.” Imogen pushed past people, trying to get through. 12

“OKAY! BYE IMMY!” Stella shouted over the vast amount of people, she began to get swept into the crowd. And Imogen could no longer hear Stella shouting about how dark art is her favourite art, and girly art is rubbish. 13

Mr. Brockenhurst wiped his hot for-head. He slowly searched the shelves, that were bombarded with all sorts of supernatural information books. He came across the ‘Vampire’ section. 14

“I suppose she could be a Vampire. There’s no other reasonable logical explanation for it.” Mr. Brockenhurst shook his head. Why has it come to this? Is this is life? Will his last dying moments involve this silliness? 15

Imogen sniffed, the stench was awful. 16

“Pizza…” Imogen raised an eye brow. The school cafeteria food wasn’t satisfactory. But it was the best she could do at the moment. None of the other Demons or Gods were going to make her a packed lunch for school, were they now?17

“I LOVE YOUR HAIR!” A slim girl with black hair with random purple and blue streaks ran up to Imogen. The blonde’s who were stood behind Imogen in the queue, pulled a face and strutted off.18

“That got rid of the Barbie’s. Now for the jocks…” Eden said in a monotone voice.19

“Eden. Hi. I heard you won first place in that art competition.” Imogen grinned slightly. 20

“Yeah.” 21

“I also heard what the picture was. What made you draw that?” Imogen asked interestedly.22

“Oh… after watching a few clips of Sailor Moon… followed by Eastenders… don’t forget the Batman movie.” Eden waved her hand in the air. 23

Imogen laughed slightly. A sudden pain struck her head. “I’m sorry. I have to go…” Imogen rubbed her forehead and inched out of the queue.24

“What? Why? Where are you going?” Eden wasn’t usually the type to ask questions. But she new something was up.25

“Eden, it’s a long story. I’m really sorry. But, I don’t think you’ll see me tomorrow… or the days after that.” Imogen remained rubbing her head, but she stared at the floor, she was in emotional pain and physical pain. 26

“Hold on there missy!” Eden grabbed Imogens arm. “I know were the ‘Life Haters’ and everything, but if you’re gonna’ commit suicide I’d rather I do it with you.” 27

Imogen, looked at Eden. She hated this part.28

“No. I’m not…” For a second Imogen thought of what she could say. “I’m moving. Moving house.” 29

“WHAT?!” Eden gripped Imogens wrist. “Another thing, I haven’t even ever been to your house! Do you even live in a house?! I’m your friend, you can tell me anything!” Eden began to shout.30

“Its confusing. I’m sorry. My… Its … Mom. My mom. She’s..” Imogen stuttered.31

“She’s what? Haven’t seen her either! I haven’t seen any of your relatives! All those parent teacher conferences and you never come! Imogen what the Hell is going on?” 32

“MY MOM, HAS CANCER!” Imogen boomed into Eden’s face. People around the cafeteria began to stare. Imogen lowered her voice. Hung her head low again. “We’re moving for her operation. She is shy. I have to go. I’m sorry.”33

“Well…” Eden released Imogen. “What shall I tell the teachers?” Eden asked, the queue began to move on.34

“Tell them to get a life.” Imogen smirked. “I’ll miss you.” 35

“You’re one strange girl Imogen.” Eden laughed, though she felt like crying. The queue moved up and Eden was caught in it, she was pushed forward. 36

When Eden turned back to shout to Imogen, she was gone. 37

Mr. Brokenhurst smiled as he glanced up at the clock. Nearly noon. He then strained to continue reading the book on ‘Vampire’s.’ 38

“Oh Imogen.” He sighed.39

“Who’s Imogen? A secret partner perhaps?” An old librarian carrying a tray with cups of tea, sat down next to the frail man and joked.40

“No, she’s… a myth.” Mr. Brokenhurst grinned. 41

“Ah, still chasing Vampires I see?” The librarian took of a cup and placed it next to Mr. Brokenhurst, then the librarian stared at the book Mr.Brokenhurst was reading.42

“No… no. Its for…. Someone I know. Wanted me to look up something. You see.” Mr. Brokenhurst stuttered as he lied.43

“Oh. Alright.” The librarian winked and weakly walked off.44

Imogen put her books into her locker. Then slammed the locker door shut quickly. She had to get out of there. 45

“Immy!” Stella rushed up to Imogen, with the biggest eyes ever. 46

Imogen sighed, she really didn’t need this right now.47

“I heard… your moving?” Stella nearly flooded the hallway with her tears. 48

“Yes, I am. I have to go now. Bye.” Imogen hurried down the corridor.49

“OKAY IMMY! CALL ME!” Stella screamed. 50

“Okay.” Imogen shouted back as she turned the corner. “Not.” 51

Imogen smiled to herself, soon she’d be out of this stupid uniform. Everyone at school hated the uniform. It consisted of a blue, red and white chequered skirt. A white blouse, and a blue blazer. With black flat shoes. Of course, no one really paid any attention to shoes. Imogen tended to wear converse, while Stella wore black platform boots with buckles on. Stella tended to always make a statement that she’s a lonely ‘Goth’, just like Imogen. While Imogen was against labels, so she detested this idea completely. 52

The dark streets were cold and un-welcoming. Cars zoomed down the road. Mr. Brokenhurst shivered as he finally reached his house . Opening the door, the warmth of his home hit him. Jesse, Mr.Brokenhurst’ cat meowed and purred. She jumped onto the couch and curled up.53

“Hello Jesse.” Mr. Brokenhurst hung his coat on the hook, and rested in the arm chair. He then flicked on the TV from the remote. News flashes and kids cartoons, that was all that seemed to be on these days.54
