"Untitled" Chapter 5

The Assistant District Attorney walked in instead of a guard, “Hello Mr. Smith, nice to see you again.” He looks at Kizzy, and sticks out his hand for her to shake, “You must be Kizzy Willows. Mr. Smith told me that he would bring you with him on this trip. I’m Kaeden Kerr.”1

“Well, at least he told one of us,” she tells Kaeden as she shakes his hand. “Nice to meet you,” she tells him with a tiny smile. 2

He laughs lightly, “Well come on back you two, I convince the guard to let me take you back with me, since I need to be there as well for all the legal stuff.” He looks away, knowing what he’s really doing isn’t legal, but he has to make it look good to everybody, even to the people who’s trying to help him.3

“Fine with me, I don’t feel like being arrested for breaking out an inmate,” Wade jokes with him, and they laugh together and Kizzy just rolls her eyes; wanting to get this over with so she can go home. 4

After walking in a maze for awhile, they finally get to a holding cell where the smell of blood and fear persists to Kizzy and Wade. When he sees them, he instantly stands up, like the prison guards train you. He stands at six foot and three inches, and his eyes are unique; one is the colour of the sky on a clear day and the other is almost the colour of seaweed. Kizzy can’t take her eyes off of his eyes and he just looks away, and the smell of fear becomes stronger and she drops her eyes as well, “So you the people who’s going to be getting me out of here?” They just nod to the question, because they are just studying him, watching his manners, “Well it’s good to meet you then. I’m Warren Barr; please no jokes bout Barr being behind bars, it got old after the first few years of being in here,” he tells them, sticking out his handcuffed hands, to shake them.5

Wade just smiles at him and nods, shaking his hand. Then takes a seat giving Kizzy the look to sit next to him. All four of them sit there, looking at each other for a few silent seconds that seems like an hour. “I don’t see how I can just be released, like nothing as happened,” Warren was the first one to speak, knowing that he needs to know how this is happening.6

The lawyer clears his throat, “This is going to be a rehabilitation program; at least on paper. It was the only way I could let the DA let me do this. Normally, we wouldn’t be doing this, but after you’re escape and attack by some unknown creature, we thought we would rather be safe than sorry. There will be a few rules for you to follow and there will be people checking up on you to make sure everything is fine and dandy with the arrangement. I assume that Mr. Smith has a room open for you?” Kaeden turns to Wade as he begins asking him.7

“Yes, I do. It’s a steady home and I will go by what rules you have. I also want to know if I can add some of my own rules to that list?” Wade asks, knowing that he also needs to protect his daughter from this man, who may or may not be telling the truth about the woman that he was convicted of murdering.8

“Yes, that is fine. We have expected you do want to add some rules yourself. Write them down and I will make a new list of those rules. I will give you my number where you can reach me anytime, just in case something goes wrong. I already have yours so I can schedule a meeting at your house for a later time, maybe in a month or so, depending on how busy I get during these next few months,” he tells Wade, completely ignoring Kizzy.9

Kizzy was focused on the inmate, Warren. She was getting a sense about him that he hasn’t been a complete angel, but she believes that he never harmed that woman. She doesn’t know how to explain how she knows these things, but she always has a sense to when they were lying, and not how other wolves can tell; by smell. Sometimes the scent of a lie can be masked, usually with some other emotion, like fear or anger. She studies him, seeing that he is uncomfortable with the arrangement. He’s acting like he knows something that neither Wade or Kizzy doesn’t. He keeps watching the lawyer, and all Kizzy can get from him is, “He’s faking. This isn’t real.” It’s almost like she’s reading his thoughts, but she knows that she can’t do that. She nudges Wade and he looks at her and she leans close to his ear, whispering as softly as she can, knowing that he can still hear her, “There’s something not right here. It’s not with Warren, it’s with the ADA,” he looks at her, like he wasn’t sure if he heard her right, and she nods.10

“Mr. Kerr I was wondering if there is anything else we should know? I want to make sure this is all very legal, so there isn’t something that could ruin this opportunity for this gentleman here,” Wade points to Warren, and Warren just looks away, trying to find something else to focus on. He’s beginning to have the mannerisms of a wolf, Kizzy notices as she keeps watching him.11

“There is nothing at all. All you have to is sign this contract that basically gives you the rights of authority over him. Though, you do have some rules of your own in what you can do and you will be needing to read that as well.” Kaeden Kerr is lying, both Wade and Kizzy can smell the lie, but all Wade could do is just nod his head in understanding. 12

“That is all well. I expected there to be some rules for me to follow. Now, give me the papers and lets get this started so I can get Mr. Barr here into a safer place; oh before I forget, how long will this last for him?” Kaeden slides over the papers and Wade puts on his reading glasses on the edge of his nose as he starts going through the papers that Kaeden has slid in front of him.13

“Oh, it could be a permanent opportunity for Mr. Barr, depending on how he behaves with you and if we can get things in order for him to do so. I have been trying to get him set free for a long time and this is a great opportunity for him to get out of this hell hole. I know, I’m the one who put him away, but I was forced to do so. I will be reopening the case when he is out, after that has been finished, I will see what I can do depending on after that. I know this isn’t how an ADA is suppose to be, but I have always believed he was set up for this woman’s murder.” Kaeden looks away, knowing he shouldn’t have said that, but he couldn’t help himself. What he doesn’t know is that Kizzy helping him to tell the truth.14

Wade just nods and he keeps reading through the contract and the rules he and Warren both had to follow, and agrees with them. After finishing reading Wade puts down his glasses and looks at Warren and he automatically looks away, not really knowing why.15

“Warren, I need to hear it from you, I know you haven’t said much through this meeting, but I need to know that you are telling the truth,” Wade stares at him, making him feel a little uncomfortable; making him shuffle in his seat and winces in pain as he moves, still hurting from his attack. He hasn’t healed as fast as some wolves she has known to change.16

“I did not kill that woman. I’m the one who found her, I tried to help her and then the cops showed up and they saw me covered in her blood and they didn’t even try to look for anybody else and they didn’t believe me,” he looks Wade in the eye when he tells him this, and neither Wade or Kizzy got the feeling that he was lying to them or to anybody else. 17

Wade signs the contract in all the right areas and nods, “I believe you, and that’s all that matters right now.” He looks over towards Kaeden Kerr, “I will help whenever you need it with the new investigation. I know a lot of people around town that could help you, nobody that’s involve in anything either, so if you need them as witnesses, they will be reliable.”18

Kaeden smiles a real smile at them for the first time since they have been together and nods, “Thank you, if I need anything, I will let you know.” He goes back to his serious face and straightens his jacket and tie, “Now that everything is settled and signed, all of you are free to go.”19

When Kaeden Kerr said that, Warren’s face lit up like he was a child at an amusement park. He looks over at the ADA, “Thank you so much sir,” he looks over towards Wade and Kizzy, “and thank you guys too, for agreeing to this.” They all smile at him as the guards unlocked him out of his chains and Warren just rubs his wrists, knowing that he won’t have to wear them for a long while. “I promise I won’t mess this up, I’ll do everything that needs to be done.”20

Once Warren sits his first step outside as a free man, he smiles to himself and is glad that he has finally gotten out a few years of being locked up for something he never did. “Well Warren, the first thing we are going to do is get you some new clothes and something to eat, a good meal that is,” Wade tells him and laughs out of amusement as they get into the car.21

Warren laughs with him and Kizzy just shakes her head, knowing this is going to be a long day, “That sounds like a good idea Mr. Smith.” 22

Wade looks at him, and gives him a kind smile, “Please, call me Wade. We will get you some new clothes first and then go back to your new home for some lunch, since we will be needing to talk privately.” Warren just nods, understanding that it is going to be an important talk, but what he doesn’t know that it’s going to be life changing. He will soon know the truth about what he is going to be turned into. 23

As they day passes on, Wade’s car is almost full of new clothes and other odds and ins for Warren. Kizzy knew she would be going to help during the meeting, not for the shopping, “You guys are just using me as a bag carrier. You are the men, carry them yourself!” Kizzy throws the newest batches of bags onto Wade and Warren and they just laugh at her, splitting up the bags between each other. 24

“I think we’re done anyways. I’m getting hungry, what about the two of you?”25

“Yeah I could eat, what about you Warren?” Kizzy asks him politely.26

“Yup, me too. I’m starved and I’m ready to eat something other than prison food!” He grins, knowing that he is going to have a great meal, and they laugh at his grin, knowing that he’s thinking about a meal that could be.27

“You are so easily pleased, Warren. I think you and I are going to get along just fine,” Kizzy tells him as she wraps her arm around him, barely being able to reach his shoulders.28

Wade caught himself before he glares at Kizzy having his arm around Warren, almost jealous. His wolf tells him to tear the guy’s head off, but he settles down before anybody notices that something is wrong, “Well guys, lets go home and get something to eat, I’m starving,” he smiles at them and they head back to the car and put the newest bags in and they are on their way home; to eat and to change a man’s life forever more.
